I loaded v1.04 on my 826L and after doing a Factory Reset after sending the FW file and setting up basic WiFi, 5Ghz Single mode N or default mode with WPA and or WPA2, mixed security, or WPA2 and AES only, my Mac Book Pro fails to connect on 5Ghz, A "connection timeout" message is seen. If i turn WIFi security OFF. Then it will connect. Tested OSX 10.7 and 10.8.

If someone else can verify this as well. I'll test Windows with a DWA-160 tomorrow.

2.4Ghz and security is working and connecting at the correct speed for my Mac.

I"ll not recommend anyone use v1.04 for general use. Still seems broke.  :-\

Model:DIR-826L, HW:A1, FW:1.02/1.03/1.04 (I have the weak signal using the 5Ghz band.???)

I use the iPad2/iPad mini/iPhone5/MacBookAir to connect my DIR-826L with the 5GHz signal, the distance between the DIR-826L no more than 4 meters! (iOS V6.1.3, Mac OS X V10.8.3)
Note : With the 2.4GHz signal, the distance between the DIR-826L over 12 meters! ::)

PS. All kinds of combinations have checked, I can't leave the router over 4M otherwise the 5GHz SSID will disappear. :'(

What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed before and after sending the FW files?

I recommend not using v1.03 and v1.04 as they are faulty and do not work correctly for hte 5Ghz radio.

Was this working with the shipping version of v1.01? I recommend that you downgrade FW to v1.02 or v1.01 using the following:
FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)

Be aware that 5Ghz is best in line of sight operation and with out any building obstructions like walls and doors.

Greetings

So do we know yet if this firmware is working?

I'm currently using 1.02 and would like to try UPNP and the media server with DLNA support.

Does uPnp work on v1.02?

No status on fixes for v1.04 yet.

No

Sounds like Chiko had it working just a weak signal from the 5gz network which is normal.

I'm tempted to give it a try.

Wow what a headline "... Official Release - DO NOT USE".  I am confused!

If we are NOT to use this "official release," why is it available for download and install?  I mean, will it brick my router or what?

I did download and install it before I saw your dire warning not to!  Compared to other home routers I have used, the DIR826L fw is very fragile.  While configuring user access for "Storage", somehow it was duplicating entries when I did a "Save Settings".  Also, I could not seem to get a user to have Read/Write access even though it was listed as such.  When I used the SharePort web page I got denied even trying to read!

So, I used Tools to reset back to factory settings and started my configuration all over again for the third time, this time starting with "Storage".  I think it might have something to do with the fact the the Admin Login would expire even though I was setting settings frequently.

Throughput speed for me at 5 GHZ is same as wired: ~30 Mbps (the speed of my internet connection)!  When it comes to poor wireless performance you've got to know your environment.  I got the DIR826L just for the 5GHZ because my computer wireless scanner app picks up eleven 2.4 GHZ radios: 3 of which are on channel 1, 4 are on 6 and 4 are on 11.  If you know wireless bandwidth, you know the problem.  At times, I was barely getting 3 Mbps throughput apparently caused by all the interference.

I'd down grade to v1.02. I found the 5Ghz was not working correctly and have reported it. Other issues may be seen.

Factory reset, downgrade to v1.02 and then factory reset once more. Configure from scratch.
v1.02 seems to be the most stable for the NA region at this time. D-Link is reviewing the issues.

I bought a DIR-826L and was able the make a correct setup with a 5GHz bridge to my mediaplayer
After finishing the setup i installed the 1.04 firmware and was not able to connect anymore. I found out the 5GHz signal strength dropped, and finally i found this forum tread.

To get back to 1.02 i did:
But, I think the signal strength is still not the same as before.  My 5 GHz bridge is not able to connect and with my phone i'm not able to connect on places where i was able to connect before the update debacle.

What can i do to get back the original performance?

About the update policy:
To avoid security issues and problems of outdated firmware i always install the latest available firmware of new products. But is seem not valid for D-Link. For me (at least) the 5GHz is the selling point of this router. I suggest to remove the 1.03 and 1.04 firmware from the download page since the it is suggested to not upgrade to them.

I would Factory Reset, reload v1.02, Factory reset once more, then set up from scratch. Do not load the saved configuration file.

So what was the result after you downgraded? I know when I down graded on mine it worked well. However talking to DLink about my 826L and it not working well with v1.03 and v1.04, they wanted to review it so its waiting to be returned once the replacement arrives, I think today. I would recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and talk to them about this, ask for level 2 or higher and even mention this. D-Link mentioned that there could be some units out there that are faulty.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

Tried, no luck.

Working with D-Link, they presume that there is an issue HW wise with my 826L and have requested a return of it. I'm waiting for the replacement which should be in today. They say that the problems I saw, they can't seem to reproduce so this could be a isolated HW issue and not FW related. I'm taking off the DO NOT USE status for v1.03 and v1.04 and recommend that if your router is working with all version of FW, then you should be good to go.

If any one is experiencing any similar issues using v1.03 or v1.04 and v1.02 doesn't see any problems, I recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and get your unit into RMA. All version of FW should work well on the router.

I'll upstate my experiences with my new 826L soon.

Any update on this?

I just purchased this router a few days ago, (north america, ontario canada, walmart) the only reason I bought this one was for the 5.8 ghz band, as there are 7+ 2.4 ghz wifi networks in range of my house, plus 6-7 2.4 ghz clients on my network alone.

I just upgraded to 1.04 to fix the UPNP remote exploit discovered by rapid7 earlier this year, as well as update the DLNA streaming options, and try to make my friend's ps3 work better with port forwarding.

Of course I didn't see this page ahead of time and proceeded to render the 5.8 ghz transmitter completely useless.

So now I'm about to try downgrading it to 1.02 but who wants to knowingly revert to exploitable software?

I might as well be using WEP or WPS.. ffs..

Definitely would not have purchased this router if I was aware of these issues.  ??? >:(

I personally haven't had any issues with my router. Only on v1.03 was 5Ghz an issue and that was corrected with v1.04. This is a very good little router and works well for me. Range is very nice on both radios, better on 5Ghz.

If your not satisfied with the product then please return it and find something that works for you.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply :) Sorry for the frustration earlier, been too long since I had my nicotine  :-[

Hardware version is A1

Firmware version is 1.02, I tried the 1.04 version yesterday and it worked fine except that the signal from the 5 ghz band was very choppy and would not accept connections, the problem seemed to match exactly what other people were describing with 1.03 The photo i posted has the signal graph showing -59 dBi steady whenever the signal was up, but it would stop broadcasting and restart repeatedly.

I am in Cornwall ontario canada, so NA region.

No.... I didn't do the factory reset.. should have I guess

Router worked perfect before upgrade, works perfect after downgrading, except for UPNP that only worked on 1.04

ISP is CIK telecom 20/2 megabit DOCSIS 3 cable

Modem is a Thompson DCM478

Wired:

I have no issues with wired connections.. the only wired connections are DHCP static assigned by MAC
Ipv6 is disabled, isp doesn't support it, so i didn't bother upgrading the local network.
UPNP and multicast ipv4+ipv6 are enabled
This is probably the first router i've used that qos seemed to work actually quite nicely.

Wireless:

Channel modes for both bands are 20/40 auto, 6 clients on 2.4, 1 client on 5.8

WPS is of course disabled
Security is WPA2 AES only

Cordless house phone is 2.4 ghz, all neighbors are 2.4 ghz, and all 6 local clients are on 2.4 ghz and are connecting without any issue whatsoever, on both 1.02 and  1.04, except for my pc that is connecting (right now) at 5.8 without any issue on 1.02. After upgrading to 1.04 i was unable to connect at all at 5.8 and had to connect with my pc at 2.4

I can try upgrading to 1.04 again and doing the hard reset i suppose.. I loaded config.bin after flashing both times, I haven't done a factory reset since I bought it..

Don't load the saved config file this time and just do a factory reset before and after the FW file process then set up from scratch.

I'm sorry I haven't updated in a while, I've been ridiculously busy with work and such and have not had a chance to experiment more with the router. I downgraded to the previous version, the one it shipped with and it's been working fine so far.

When I get more time I will test the new firmware again with a full reset.

I have Hardware Version: A1 - was running with what came on it (I think 1.x), I just purchased this unit.  It locked up on me, so I thought I would come get the latest firmware.  v1.04 worked but things got slow after a day (even on the wired ports - seemed very strange to me).  I did do a complete reset to factory after the firmware upgrade to 1.04 and reloaded my settings.  So I dropped back to firmware version 1.03.  Everything seemed fine but after about 4 days, it got slow again.  So I just rebooted and all was good.  Then a few days later, same thing - the 826L web interface is slow to respond and speed tests over the unit are showing drop outs and doing about 50% of normal bandwidth.  So I rebooted the 826L again and all is back to normal, getting 50M throughput over the wireless (matching the internet pipe), web interface responsive...etc.  My guess is this is going to happen again (and it is not isolated to either band, both react the same) and since it also affects the web interface (responsiveness of the unit), I believe this is related to the OS/Unit and not the Wireless only.

Any ideas?  Do I drop to 1.02?  Do I have a defective unit (maybe it is heating up or something) ??

Well I don't know is special about me - BUT it just happened again.  This morning everything was slow and I couldn't even get the DIR-826L web login.  Power cycled the unit and all if fine again.  So I'm not sure what I am doing to a unit that works just fine when I power it up and a few days later I can't even login to it; power cycle the unit and all is good again...

So wifi clients still have access to router and internet however LAN wired doesnt...I would turn OFF ALL LAN wired clients and test with just one client at a time or gradate them...

You don't have any filters set or anything to prohibit LAN computers from connecting do you?

Swap LAN cables to be sure between router and clients.
Ensure LAN NIC drivers are up to date on each client.

FN - I'm not sure where the WiFi clients have access and LAN don't came from, that is not the case.  I'll detail the items below so there will be no confusion:

I have owned at least 4 different WAP's over the years, including the last one which was running Tomato aftermarket firmware on a Linksys unit - no problem at all!  So I am both perplexed and at this point a bit frustrated (sorry if it sounds that way).  So I've run 1.03 and 1.04 - both exhibit the same behavior, after a few days the unit goes south, to include slow interaction, slow performance and this morning - not even handing out an IP address.  In every case, power cycle the unit and bingo - everything is fine.  And the power cycle is a quick 10 second off then on.  I'm at a loss....

So when trying to find the magical fix - please keep in mind after a power cycle everything is just fine - working perfect.  So if it is some strange setting or some cable issue....blah blah.. why does work after a power cycle and one of such short duration (which would even exclude heat because it didn't have time to cool down).  And yes - I've left it off for longer periods too, always the same issue - give it a few days and it runs slow - restart and it is fine.

(I'm thinking of turning off the mydlink cloud settings next to see if that helps.) I'm lost, this is crazy.... any help appreciated!!

Let us know if disabling Mydlink helps. It shouldn't effect the router.

How old is the ISP modem?
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Try a different ISP modem or take to a different location like a friends or families place as a test suggestion. If problem doesn't follow then something else with ISP could be effecting the router.

Only other thing I suggest is to get a new replacement or contact D-Link for RMA. It seems localized to your unit as nobody else has reported this kind of problem.

Keep us posted.

Thanks FN - I think since my Tomato/Linksys was working fine, it probably isn't the ISP (same modem/same ISP).  If the MyDlink doesn't stop this from happening (or even if it does) - sounds like it is time to contact D-Link.

FN - Tech Support said I have a bad unit and to return it (which I will be doing).  In case someone else has this issue - I did some research and this is happening to lots of others too:

" The main problem with the router is that it needs to be reset ever 2-3 days. After 2-3 days the router starts dropping the internet connection at random times. "

"This DIR-826L would periodically drop the network connection and I would reset it. The drops have continued to get more frequent such that I had to reset it almost daily."

"I have it for more than 2 years and this router has to be started every day."

"Worked fine for the first few months, then, like other reviewers, the router started lagging; video started stuttering; downloads started pausing on both wired and wireless connections. Then it started becoming completely unresponsive - only coming to life after hard resets to factory settings. "

"When it works, it works great but that is only for a short amount of time. I have not had a stretch of more than 3 days with out rebooting the router."

"The router just hangs randomly every few days even with limited or no network activity. The only way to get the router back is to reboot it from the power button. "

"The router still switches off randomly after a few hours, I have to unplug and plug it back to get it to work"

Lots more here....  :(

Your next one should be good to go. I've had mine for about a year now and haven't notice anything...I'll keep an eye on it. Good little router though.

Reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt, we don't know what the other reviews setup or environment is like and how they have it configured. Could be anything that is effecting there experiences or like you, just HW failure. Why I'm glad we at least did some troubleshooting to help narrow it down.

Let us know how the new router works for you.

I do hope the next one works OK.  I like the features, and while I agree on taking reviews with a grain of salt - I just pulled all those that seem to be having the "need to reset every few days" - which is what I am experiencing.  I do think this is a "known" or "should be known" issue.  Too much of a coincidence that this many people have the same issue where a power cycle fixes it for a few days.  And yesterday I came into my office and it smelled like some electronics was overheating (that hot plastic smell).  I did the sniff test all over the room and sure enough - the 826L was the source.  I have no doubt in my mind there is an issue with either this model unit or the unit batch.  Based on your experience, hopefully it is just localized to a batch run or two.

I'm in the process of cracking mine open and checking the heat sink on the chip...I found a composite heat sink which after I get it open fully and put it online and check the temp of it...will see if any mods need to be done. We've found that sometimes these composite heat sinks do not work as well as metal sinks:

That will be interesting to see.  I'm pretty sure this unit has those same type of heat-sinks or doesn't have large enough ones.  Looking at the unit, there is almost no airflow - OK bottom vents but those vents on the top are really small.  The rest of the unit is totally enclosed.

Post by: FurryNutz on December 21, 2013, 01:59:40 PM
Ok so I put my 826L online..can't seem to fully take the case apart so I'm leaving it partially cracked..enough to take a temp laser gun reading.

The main chip thats got a sink on it isn't reading much over 80F. Thats good. However to smaller chips, 1 an Atheros, is reading 110F an the other is about 105F. This isn't under any load. No heat sinks attached to these 2 small chips. I don't know if I'll get a chance to test this under load later as I'm leaving for the holidays.

I recommend placing a Laptop cooler under this router as there are ventilation holes that will allow air flow complete thru from top to bottom of the router. You could even place a small PC case fan on top too. Something thats quiet and just has enough air flow to help out some.  Pull sir flow from the bottom up to the top. suggestions for LT fans are in either the DAP-1533 or DIR-827 heat mod threads.

I'll take some readings again when I get more time. I presume that in a 70F office room that this router will be ok. 90F or higher room, the heat may cause the chips to wear out sooner than expected possibly.

I'll report back when I get more temp info.
Title: Re: DIR-826L FW v1.04NA Official Release
Post by: MartinZ on December 22, 2013, 04:43:48 AM
Thanks for the readings....  no doubt the fans will help - but I'm not one to buy a new router and then have to mod it or add external cooling.  :)  I'll be getting an RMA and checking to see if they have a later version of hardware - this seems to be a pretty clear design issue.  As others have noted in the feedback posts - they didn't have issues their their old routers that the 826 replaced.  That is my case too - I've had 4 others routers, in the same spot, in the same house and none showed signs of heat issues nor did I have to put fans on them to make them work.  ::)  Have a great holiday and thanks for all the feedback.

By no means is this considered a design flaw. Looking at the operating temps in the specs of this and other routers, these routers are working with in the designed specs for operating temps. Others may have reported similar issues like yours however we do not know the full details of there environment and setup and configuration. A large percentage of problems with routers stems from mis-configurations and environment conditions. These routers work well out of the box and when properly setup up. Nobody has reported and heating problems other than you and we don't know all the specifics to your situation. Ive had mine for a little over a year now and have enjoyed greatly. This is a solid router and everything should be diagnosed before assuming there is a flaw in design. The information i posted is meant as a possible preventive suggestion for those who can confirm heat issues or maybe there environment is a little warmer or who live in warmer climates maybe. I have a few of these cylinder style routers as they work well as far as there design ventilation goes. Its a better design than the flat style box routers. There is better air flow. I played xbox last night. I took s reading and all three chips read around 85-90F. Well with in operating temp specs and room was at 70F.

Ya, i wish they would use metal sinks instead of these composite ones. Maybe they are as good, however im just old fashioned and experience tells me that metal works better or at least having tines on the sink helps instead of just being flat.

There only Rev A avail in this model. Unless we can prove to D-Link there maybe a heat issue and they deem it valid after review and testing and worth correcting, prob won't see a Rev B. However anything is possible.

Well I can't speak to the overall design, except I'm having issues and I'm not alone (see below).  Having said that it could just be a unit issue and 1 in xxxx showing this issue.  The good news for me is that the seller is taking this unit back (even though I threw out the box) and has already shipped a replacement and given me a paid return shipping label. Kudos to Rakuten.com! Again I've had 4 other routers doing this same job in the same place over about 10 years and Zero issues.  We will see if the replacement does the same thing - if it does, I'm done.  Others with seemingly the exact same issue (it does seem that people expressing this issue have posted in the same time frame that I bought mine - just recently):

"This DIR-826L would periodically drop the network connection and I would reset it. The drops have continued to get more frequent such that I had to reset it almost daily. "

Leads me to think that there could be something connected or environment related that could be effecting this router maybe. I have never had to power cycle mine or had the router become inoperative in this way.

You might want to also try this, turn off both radios and test only wired devices. See now long the router does. Then turn on say the 2.4Ghz radio, leaving the 5Ghz off. Test for a while. Then turn on the 5Ghz radio.

Do you use both radios normally?

New unit arrived yesterday and is now online.  I'll see how long it lasts.  It came with 1.02 and I have updated it to 1.04.  I put it online last night and this morning, still going strong.  Time will tell.  I do seriously doubt this is an environmental issue, because the same environment seemed to be just fine for 3 Linksys and 1 Netgear router.  Why would 4 other routers have zero issues, in the same physical location, with the same network configuration??  On top of that I can point to others having the exact same issue - the slow/drops every 2-3 (few) days and a power cycle corrects it for another few days.  While your router may be just fine and you have never had to do it - these people seem to have posted these comments in the last couple of months.  If I was D-Link, I'd want this unit to do some testing (except it is going back to Buy.com today) - as this could be an issue with a batch run of components.  But D-Link would never be able to correlate this unless they are monitoring feedback forums.  Most of the people that posted on Amazon, just stopped using the unit - they didn't return it nor does it sound like they contacted tech support.

It will be interesting to see if this new unit does the same thing - so far, it is doing fine and the GUI is very responsive.  I'm not connecting the cloud portion and will just run it like this until it has the old problem or makes a few weeks.

I would have not upgraded FW and tested the new unit out of the box. Keep us posted. I'd like to review your settings sometime if possible. I presume you are using default settings other than SSID/PW and leaving mydlink disabled?

Your other routers are different and could also be old enough that they may not include newer wifi technology that would have an impact on how this or other routers behavior. Older routers behave differently then new gen routers.

What all do you have connected to this router? Are they all online at the same time? Both wired and wireless?
Title: Re: DIR-826L FW v1.04NA Official Release
Post by: MartinZ on December 27, 2013, 04:21:21 PM
Yes, I should have kept the default FW.  Having said that, the unit went south - so it didn't make a day.  In this condition, the UI was very slow and I didn't see any log entries of note and no packet drops - however the Internet and UI were very slow.  A single power cycle and all was back to normal.  Cool day here too - so this probably isn't heat related.  I've just put on the original FW - 1.02.  In addition I picked up a contemporary dual band NetGear router today.  I have configured the NetGear with the same settings as the 826L.  Right now the 826L is online running 1.02 with debug enabled on the log.  I'll see how long this goes, if it happens again I'll slap in the NetGear and see if that unit works and for how long.

You are welcome to review my settings but it is not basic.  I have some reserve IP's, I have a number of Port Forward (Virtual Servers) items and the unit is behind another router where the Internet IP is a DMZ IP on the FiOS router.  So no doubt this is not your average configuration.  However, I've said this before but it all was working find on other hardware - to include using the open source "tomato" version, which was my last production router the 826 replaced.  It ran for over 1.5 years without a single issue.

I know the next thing to test will be putting the router back to default settings - however I need all the other stuff to work, thus I picked up another router.  If the 826 goes south again, I'll put in the like model NetGear dual band to see how that unit does.  The NetGear is an 826 like model and currently has the same configuration as the 826.  Based on those results, I'll move forward.  If the other router works, I will see if I can at least point to an area/setting that may be causing issues with the 826.  But let's see how the 826 running 1.02 does first.

Im also concern maybe that your iSP modem or something on your networks is causing this problem...What model
Modem is the FIOS modem?

The old unit was returned to the retailer (Rakuten.com), not to D-Link proper (sorry). FiOS modem is a MI424WR-GEN3I, which I believe is one of their newer ones.  I think the next best thing to try is to turn off the 5Ghz WiFi - but I will only try that after trying the NetGear - with both the 2.4 and 5 running.

Well under v1.02 this unit is still going, the UI is still quick - however the browsing is starting to slow down.  It isn't as slow as what typically happens.  Speed tests still show good, but there is a slightly noticeable delay on pages - again nothing like what normally happens.  So I did a reboot just to see and sure enough the slight delay went away. I may turn off the Advance DNS service to see if that is the cause - since the speed test seemed OK.  I may also throw the NetGear unit online today to see how long that lasts.  More to come....

Found something interesting, so I'm keeping the 826 online after making two changes:

1) Since the 826 is behind the FiOS router, I decided to force the Internet connection to 100 Meg from Auto (just to try)

2) What I found that is strange is, I have a wireless printer that had a static IP.  Looking at the 826 wireless status, I could see the MAC address of it connect via N, but the IP address was showing as 0.0.0.0.  Now the printer worked fine - but that didn't seem right, so I have cleared the static on the printer and created a reserve for it on the 826.  Reset everything and now it is showing in the WiFi status with the proper IP.

So with those two changes I'm going to make another run at this...

I recommend always using Reserved IPs on the router. Static IPs set on devices will show as zeros on the routers status pages.

I see that this model doesn't support 1000Mb WAN port speeds...Does the ISP modem give the 826L a public or private IP address?
Title: Re: DIR-826L FW v1.04NA Official Release
Post by: MartinZ on December 30, 2013, 05:33:26 PM
Oh - well then the 0.0.0.0 is normal.  The FiOS router gives the 826 a private IP (which is DMZed to the Internet).  And the 826L does support 1000 Meg, there is a drop down setting for it under the WAN port speed and it has 10/100/1000 or Auto.  Also the specs show 10/100/1000

So far, so good - but I guess there isn't much I really changed.

Still going strong.  Now today I was able to make it lock up - the setting "True Gigabit Routing Connectivity Setting" was on. I understand when this option is enabled, the router will speed up the NAT/Routing performance by hardware acceleration mechanism.  When I turned it off the unit totally locked up.  I power cycled and it was still off.  I'm going to run it off for now, along with the force to 100Mb. I also have MyDlink enabled again. I think I'm ready to leave it alone - and see how long it will go... :)

Ah, TGR should be disabled if the wan port speed isnt Gb and your isp speeds are low...
After disabling TGR, QoS will be enabled. Set up traffic shapping accordingly. I think there is a setting for 10mb up and use 100mb down.
Title: Re: DIR-826L FW v1.04NA Official Release
Post by: MartinZ on December 31, 2013, 05:54:56 PM
Yea, that's why I wanted to turn it off.  I'm running 50Mb down / 30Mb up, so I don't need that WAN port at a Gb.  Also I'm going to leave QoS off - no real need for me to prioritize any traffic.  I think at this point I'll freeze any settings to see if one of these changes has fixed that 2-3 days slow down issue. If I can make a week or two, I'm going back to the latest firmware as I know that seemed to cause the issue in a day or less.

FN - I discovered something very interesting this morning.  Things still OK, however the UI was just a tad slower than it had been all week (still nothing like the past).  So I looked around and discovered the following (I can send you details and screen shots if there is a way to get it to you privately):

After the 15 minutes, the UI was back to the very quick response times

Is there a connection state issue and it not timing out connections?  Again, I do have screen shots showing the phantom active sessions, the no DHCP IP address, an NMAP discovery showing other IP's but not the powered off device, the inability to ping the phantom IP, what it looked like after the device was powered on and what it looked like after the device was powered off again.

Is this with the latest version loaded or v1.02?

I'm looking at my list there is a semi long list however i have a few devices online so I presume this is correct behavior for me. 8.8.8.8 is a Google DNS address. Are you using Google DNS? Is DNS relay enabled or disabled with manual DNS>?

Yes please email me this information...

I'll put it all together and send it to you.  I just got home and that one IP (laptop which is off) still is showing 5 connections.  The google DNS was the only IP I could think of at the time.  I know it is google DNS, I just put it in my browser to see if that connection would show up under Internet Sessions. I know it would time out via port 80 of the browser, instead of a port 53 connection, but was pretty sure it would show up while it tried to connect - and indeed it did.  That was only done for me to test the real time nature of Internet Sessions, from the device I was on.  So the connection showed up and when I closed that browser tab the connect went away.  So that told me there is no reason all those connections should be showing up from a laptop that was off for 7 hours.

Ok, I recommend doing a full factory reset, load up v1.04, factory reset once more then set up from scratch and use default ISP DNS and see what happens. Turn OFF all other devices cept for one wired LAN PC.

Please follow the FW update process for doing this. We need to establish a clean install of the FW.

Well remember, you wanted me to stay at 1.02 because that is what came with the device and it kept getting slow or locking up after 3-4 days.  But now that I made those other changes with forcing the Wan connection to 100Mb and turning off the TGR - it seems to be working OK.  Only a slight slow down in the UI this morning and when I got all those connections cleared the UI is back to very fast.  Before those two changes, the unit would have required a power cycle by now.  So I'll go back to 1.04 with those Wan 100Mb and TGR off settings and see how 1.04 works now.

I power cycle the unit and back to normal

(http://s14.postimg.org/500wrkwrx/Ashampoo_Snap_2014_01_04_13h57m13s_001.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/500wrkwrx/)

SO I guess at this point I'm going back to v1.02

The only thing I used last night and this morning is the wire directly attached PC.

When I upgraded, I updated the firmware, reset the unit to factory defaults, rebooted, reloaded the configuration.

I really do not want to manually type in all my settings again unless we are 99% sure that will do something.  In addition, when this unit was replaced and I got a new one, I did a firmware update to v1.04, factory reset, and then had to manually enter all my info (so it was done that way initially).  And the unit did this slow down thing - so I'm now thinking issues with v1.04.

I'm going back to v1.02 and seeing how long that will last.  Last time I had made a week with no real problems.  It does seem like this happens when I'm on v1.04 (but did happen under v1.02 - it just happens a lot faster with v1.04).

This is crazy.... ???

I'm going to pass this along to D-Link and see if they can review this and offer up some info. I'm wondering whats going on between v1.02 and v1.04 with using TGR disabled and setting WAN port speed to 100.

Im wondering if there is an ISP modem issue here.

So back to the modem for a minute, Is the modem in router mode or bridge? Does this modem have a DMZ?
Any chance you can get an updated modem with GB LAN port speed from your ISP by chance? I notice this is an Actiontec modem. I'll see if they have any Gb support modems out there...

Still waiting on info...I did put mine back online last night. I didn't get a chance to run any speeds tests yet. Been doing ok so far. I bridged by 868L to the 5Ghz radio. I sure noticed the temps were high though. the highest I saw was 114F on the main chip and 110F on the 2ndary chip that doesn't have heat sink by default that I applied one too. I presume the 868L is working the radio well since I have 4 devices connected to the 868L in the living room.

I'll test the speed today after work. Keep us posted on how yours is doing.

Speed Test
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/3215426334.png) (http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3215426334)

So all of my previous routers, and the new N600 working fine in the same configuration, same location.  Add to that the list I posted of people on Amazon in the feedback forums complaining about the 826L needing to be reset every few days and some every day (like I have to running FW 1.04) - and I think there is a compelling amount of information to say something is up with the 826L in certain configurations.

Now I use a lot of the functionality of routers (reserved IP's, Port Forwarding...etc), it could be anything beyond the basic configuration causes issues in the 826L.  But that doesn't seem to matter on any of the other routers I've had in this same configuration.  Maybe a bad batch of 826's.... who knows.

If there is anything I can do to help the engineers at DLink, let me know and I'll put the 826 back online.  If I run the 826 with v1.04 it will usually fail in a day - so it might provide useful information if they care to dig deeper.  I'm staying on the N600 to see if anything seems unusually with this contemporary equal.  Well actually at this point, I'm going to have to stay on the N600 because it seems to be working (like my last three routers).  :-\

From my standpoint, I guess there isn't much else to say.  You probably aren't using any port forwarding, reservations or some of the other features that I turn on.  This I do know - two Linksys routers before the 826L worked fine (one running open source firmware even) and the NetGear WNDR3400 after the 826L works fine.  The first 826L I purchased kept needing a power cycle after a few days (1 day under v1.04).  Send that unit back, get another 826L and it is doing the same thing.  I would start to think it has something to do with my configuration after the second 826L...Except....

I go purchase the NetGear WNDR3400 put it online and from day one it works and stays working.  I've stressed it, put traffic on both the 2.4 & 5Ghz radios together, ran a multi-gig backup over it - all still just humming along like the Linksys units use to do.  If you were me, what would you think?  I really like the 826L and wish it just worked, but it simply doesn't - at least not for me. The three other routers configured in the exact same spot, doing the same functions (port forwarding, reservations...etc) - worked without issue.

I do have one PF going at the moment for my DNS. I have QoS enabled for XBL and all other devices, a 250Gb USB drive connected as well. Not sure if this is similar to your set up and I presume it's not.

What PF rules do you have in place? and for what devices and applications?

I presume that if your not using any PF rules, this still exhibits the same problem?

Can you PM me a screen shot of your PF rules and any other settings you maybe using other than default ones?

You located in FL?

I have not tried turning off everything except a basic router, as I need the other functions running.  Since I'm not using the 826L, if I find time I'm going to take it with the current configuration - run v1.04, isolate it by itself and let it just sit and run.  I'll run jperf through it to one of my test servers.  That will take everything out of the picture except the device!

I put the 826 online last night so that I could upgrade it to 1.04 - then I though, let me just let the unit run until there is a problem.  If I remember right, we put 1.04 on it when I saw that large connection table issue from a disconnected device.  So I'll let this run under 1.02 until there is a problem.  Right now:

You in Fl?

Here is something you could also test for me.  I am back on the 826 as noted.  This morning I was on my desktop connected directly to the unit. That was about 6 hours ago.  Looking at the "internet connections" I'm still seeing the desktop with a lot of connections listed.  The desktop has been off for like 6 hours.  This is what I saw before with my laptop.  Would you see if you have "phantom connections" on your 826 - IP's that have been recently on and accessing the Internet but are now off...?   I'm running 1.02 at this point...

Well I think I may have found it!  I hate to jinx myself by saying that.. but it has been about a week now and all is good.  I went back again to the Netgear N600 and all was fine, except one day I went to run an Internet gadget on my main TV - which has a hub linked back via Ethernet to the main router (N600 or 826L).  The TV would not pull an IP address.  Everything else on that hub was pulling an IP (DVD, Game console..etc).  I power-cycled everything on both ends - still no IP on the TV.  Now the N600 has port lights and the port for that feed was blinking on and off. "Flapping NIC" - which was one of my original theories, but there are no port lights on the 826L (and I don't think there is even a way to see what ports are running at what speed - is there?) so if that was happening I'd never know it.  Well I put a static on the TV and all was fine and the N600 stopped flashing.  Now I should note here the N600 was not affected by this flapping on either the wireless nor other hard ports.  Even though this port was flashing, all the other devices connected to the N600 ran full speed, including wireless.

SO I thought, maybe that was the issue with the 826L and put it back online.  I kept the static on the TV but also reserved it in DHCP AND I turned off the DHCP "Always Broadcast" (compatibility for some DHCP Clients).  I upgraded the firmware to v1.3 (I didn't seen any major changes in the jump from 1.3 to 1.4 and am still a bit cautious about that build).  And so far, so good!  The way it has been reacting in the GUI to date, makes me feel pretty good, like this might last.

Is there a way to see the speed/duplex settings of the hard ports?  If not, this would make a good enhancement request.  The N600 shows this in the Stats Screen and also has the port lights - since the 826L doesn't have port lights - having this on the Stats screen would be very helpful.  I might have seen a speed change or half-duplex on that hard port.

While I still think I need another couple of weeks to declare victory - I think this is looking good!  ;D

Unbelievable - last night I post the above and this morning, guess what happened!  Yep - back to the problem.  UI and Speed Tests slow.  I did a soft restart from the UI and all back to normal.  I give, I think it has won - it seems like that slot machine from the twilight zone (if you ever saw that episode).  I'm going back to the N600 and as soon as I can find time, I am going to wipe the 826L back to factory and setup a lab to stress test it.  ???

Was this hub still connected and in the loop or not?

I would remove any and all switches or hubs interconnecting devices and see what happens.

I out my 826L back online Monday loaded with v1.04. Been working well. Have had to re-configure how it's connected to the ISP modem since I have a ATT Microcell that doesn't like TGR, D-Link asked me to test with the Microcell between the ISP modem and 826L. So I did that last night. Played with roommate on XBL last nite for a couple of hours. Speedtests were spot on with ISP. TGR is enabled with both radios going. Router is warm to the touch on top. I'll keep checking speeds this week as I have to leave it in this configuration for a few days.

After the router I have 2 xbox 360s directly connected to the router and a 24pt Gb switch with a 8pt Gb coming off it in the living room. Hopper and Boxee Box connected in the living room is all. All other devices including PCs, Printer, DIR-685, and DNS-345 are connected to the 24Pt switch.

I'd be interested in test your 826L out as well if your interested...

Ok, lets see how this weekend goes. I might be out of town this weekend again. I'll be checking mine this evening when I get home. I am wondering why your seeing this slow down.

This slow down is in the routers web page and Internet speeds as well? Just to be clear.

If your weekend results in the same experiences, I'll send you my info via PM. I hope we can figure this out.

Might have you send me your saved config file from the 826. Let me see if I can decypher it...I know that recently the config files aren't simple text anymore.  ::)

Yes, the symptom is always the same - the router UI and both Wired and Wireless all go slow.  You can notice the web UI taking like 7-10 seconds to change screens verse instant when normal.  Speedtests drop from 50Mb to like 5-10Mb - and that is on both the wireless and Ethernet ports.  And all it takes to correct is a reboot; then it is good for a few days (seems like about a week with FW 1.03, 1.02 and a day or two with FW 1.04) - that is the part that doesn't make sense to me.  That reboot has been a constant through all of this, not one time did a powercycle or warm boot come up in the bad condition.  I would sort of think if it was a setting issue that after all of these reboot/bounces I would have come across one time where it came back up in the bad condition.

I'll get you my config in PM and also let you know how the weekend goes.

Are there slightly different hardware versions of the DIR-826L router?  I see from this posting that 1.04 is the latest version, but in my router web interface, it says I'm at the latest version and my router FW is 1.02.  Is 1.04 beta?  Or do I have a version of the router that the 1.04 is incompatible with?

I recommend always checking here in the forums for versions of FW or the main web site for your region for what is available.

FN,

Well as we had talked, I gave the unit to a friend to use.  I haven't spoke to them for a while but I'm pretty sure they are working (or they would have said something to me).  Now their configuration is a simple out-of-box basic outbound - nothing at all like I'm doing.  So in that kind of configuration I guess it works OK.  I ended up running a Buffalo WZR-600DHP with their version of DD-WRT - a little over a month now and zero issues.  I wish there was a DD-WRT version (or tomato version) of firmware available for this unit as I'll bet it would have fixed my issues.  I am confident there is an issue somewhere (either firmware or hardware) when using some features - but I was never able to pinpoint just where.  However every single other WAP I used in its place never had an issue.  And because I got wrapped up in this problem, I actually tried 4 different units from 4 different vendors.

I wish I could have narrowed it to something (I still suspect the connection table not clearing up), but it just got to a point of diminishing return.  It always did show the problem - give it a day or two and slowdown to a crawl with traffic drops.  Power off and on - all was good.  And none of the other 4 routers had an issue.  I can't explain it...

Having said all of that - I hope DLINK appreciates all your work on this forum.  You are truly helpful and stick with an issue - thanks for that!  And I still think DLINK's UI is as close as someone can get to a DD-WRT like experience for monitoring what if going out and coming in to a network.  This little unit, if it works for someone, is a real bargain.  But I still think there is something a bit off with the unit, as I see others having the same issue I did - and I could not replicate it with any other unit I tested.  And yet, it looks like in my friend's environment it is just fine.  Strange indeed...    ???

I think it maybe something between your ISP modem and this router. I presume that if the router is working at a different location and it works here for me, then problem is local to your set up there or the particular modem your using.

Anyways, glad it found a new home and it's working.

Thanks for the update.

Any status on this?  ???

I bought a DIR-826L and was able the make a correct setup with a 5GHz bridge to my mediaplayer
After finishing the setup i installed the 1.04 firmware and was not able to connect anymore. I found out the 5GHz signal strength dropped, and finally i found this forum tread.

To get back to 1.02 i did:
 • Backup configuration
 • Factory reset
 • Downgrade to 1.02
 • Factory reset
 • Restore configuration
But, I think the signal strength is still not the same as before.  My 5 GHz bridge is not able to connect and with my phone i'm not able to connect on places where i was able to connect before the update debacle.

What can i do to get back the original performance?

About the update policy:
To avoid security issues and problems of outdated firmware i always install the latest available firmware of new products. But is seem not valid for D-Link. For me (at least) the 5GHz is the selling point of this router. I suggest to remove the 1.03 and 1.04 firmware from the download page since the it is suggested to not upgrade to them.
