::FIX:: DWA 552 Connection Issues Fix for Win 7 ::FIX::
« on: February 13, 2010, 05:08:36 PM »

Ok I have just FIXED my home network to have everything working proper fast with my DWA 552 card. This solution has also been tested to work well on OSX, XP, and wireless b, g, and n. EVERYTHING works smoothly!

The network setup is as follows DIR-615 router and DWA-552 pci card.

For the card:
1) Download the latest Atheros Win7 Drivers here: (latest one at post was  v8.0.0.279)

http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/14833-latest-atheros-wlan-drivers-for-windows-7-and-vista-x86-x64/

2) Remove the old drivers on your pc, and install the new drivers.

For the Router:

1) Download the latest stable release of DD-WRT open source firmware for your router model here:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

NOTE: If you are using the DIR-615 Router you need to download the modified firmware which works for DIR-615 C1 revision board. see below.

Removed un-official NON-OEM Link.

2) Install the DD-WRT router firmware using the router's firmware update util

3) Set up your router choosing a new admin password, the wireless signal type, signal strength (20/40htz auto), and set up the wireless security. The DD-WRT router homepage is located at 192.168.1.1

4) refresh the wireless network list on your pc, and connect to your network.

5) please refer all requests to zuk my dik to my pm ;)

(disclaimer: the attached firmware was hex edited by another poster on the DD-WRT forums, not my me. I take no credit for the edit for easy firmware update. Just for the dir-552 fix method :P)

Um, no!! Flashing your router with DD-WRT does not fix this problem.

Especially when you can not run DD-WRT on your router like DIR-655.

After all you are missing with the router and not this card. This card is the problem, not whatever router your using. Has nothing to do with router!!

Running the latest driver makes no difference either.

As stated above the problem is with the driver, specifically the "Scan Valid Interval".

This card incorrectly scans for access points causing massive "DPC Latency" which result in high CPU usage for a second or two which causes real time audio and video to skip.

So clearly you tried it and it didn't work; correct? Of course the card drivers are ****, however I found a way in which you can actually make the card work well, with no drops, and have a better router signal. If this workaround does not tickle your fancy then great. However this DOES fix the connection problems, even if it does not conform to your notions of how to fix the problem.

brb using a dwa-552 to actually connect to the internet.

u mad?

Use the modified atheros 8.0.279 driver and your latency will drop drastically.

I just installed it and it's waaaaaay better.

D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B)
Verizon Fios router MI424WR-GEN2

Before this fix:
Fair signal
Intermittent connection
Latency spikes same frequency as "scan valid interval"

After updating to Atheros driver 8.0.0.171:
Good signal
Stable connection
No latency spikes

I'd say that's exactly what I needed.
