Please help, not sure why i cannot connect to the internet
« on: August 23, 2011, 05:29:33 PM »

Hello, ive tried several attempts at connecting my dlink with my laptop but nothing seems to work. Ive even tried calling tech support but she or it (sounded like a robot to me)...was unable to help.

I have a 2 year old hp laptop running windows 7; and had bought a D-link model:DIR-601 a while back to make my cable internet wireless. but it was a no go. all attempts failed following all instructions given and read. I feel i am missing a step. i had my [cable modem]>[dlinkrouter]>laptop all connected by ethernet but did not work.

now i am living in a student living apartment complex which provides internet for us but you must connect through ethernet. i know its possible to make it a wireless connection because i see other surrounding students have done so. so i decided to give the dlink another go.

i'd like to know if it is possible to set up a working wireless network with only using this dlink router, my laptop, the apartments internet, and two ethernet cables (one including the blue cord provided with router).
if so could you please give me a step by step on how i should do so. the disc provided is not helping me.
as soon as i connect everything properly, there is never a connection for me to continue on. do i need a main desktop pc? if so :( i do not have one currently, just my laptop

thank you and sorry if this has been asked a million times. i tried looking through many of the topics and they dont seem to be helping. if more information is need ill do my best to provide it.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2 and Cipher type to AES only if your device support this.

I'm not 100% sure what all that means >.< but im using DIR-601 wireless N150 homerouter H/W ver A1 F/W ver 1.01NA
I'm not exactly sure whether the apartments are using DSL or Cable. there were no modems given to us, it's just an ethernet wall outlet that we can plug into and connects us automatically; no password needed.
I havn't setup anything yet with the router. my understanding is that once all is plugged in I should be able to open my browser, type in http://192.168.0.1 and setup up the rest, but i cannot.

Is there anyone local like a friend or neighbor that can help you out. We could remotely however if your not getting Internet then we can't connect and help you out. I would ask around and see if someone can help you out. Let us know if you can't find any help and will try our best to walk you thru.
