DCS-936L Motion detection false alarms
« on: October 10, 2016, 06:35:59 AM »

Motion detection is triggering on shadows made by sun as is moves throughout the day. Or at least this is my guess as there is no actual motion seen in the recording  begin saved. Morning and evening is the worst. Currently I have the sensitivity set at 50 and I get a trigger every 5 to 10 minutes (sometimes more). If I reduce the sensitivity (below 20) far enough to stop (almost stop) the false shadow triggers, the camera does not trigger when actual motion occurs, i.e. people or cars. I have also tried changing the detection area from full view to only about half of the area. not much changed.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DCS? Look at the sticker behind or under the camera.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DCSs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What happens with the setting of 20?

Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.01.05
Region Central

As I lower the sensitivity, the false triggers are reduced but still occur. The lowest I have tried is 20 because at that level, it stopped consistently detecting real motion. I could walk in front of it and it would not trigger, but 10 minutes later it trigger for no apparent reason.

I would try the next sensitivity value up from 20 and see how that does.

Can you test the camera in a different location temporarily to see if the same thing still happens? Some place where there is no sun shaded area and just actual motion?

I will move the camera and test it. I actually have 2 of these cameras and they are both doing the same thing.

The next sensitivity value up is 21. I wouldn't expect much of a difference, but I can try it on the second camera (the one I don't move).

Hmmm, ok. Let us know how it goes. Maybe something D-Link needs to review.  ::)

I opened a case with tech support, but their solution do far is to do a factory default (done...no change) and now they want to reload the firmware. I know they are working down the almighty list of things to try first, so I thought Id try the forum. I cant be the only person with this issue. Ill let you know how it goes. Thanks

Yes I would try the manual re-load of FW. Can use this to follow the process:
Link> >FW Update Process

This camera is somewhat new so not alot of feedback yet or any other users mentioning this as of yet.  :-\

So this camera is in a window pointing outside?

I don't think you are going to be able to tune out the sun and clouds going by. The camera really only knows the image has changed in some way, and if it's a cloud - it's gone from bright to darker back to bright.

I thought about that, but it also happens on days with no clouds. If it was just a cloud every now and then, I could deal with it. As the sun comes up and the shadow of the house moves across the driveway, it triggers. As slow as this occurs, I figured it would not trigger. The old er camera models have 2 setting that can be adjusted; sensitivity and percentage. This new camera only has sensitivity. I bet the percentage setting would help a lot.

Update: I loaded the new firmware update (1.02) and there is no change to the motion false triggering.

You might try a different 936L and see if it does the same time or a different model DCS. Possible that maybe the current 936L could have a problem that D-Link support should review.

I have 2 of the DCS-936L cameras. The good news is, they are functioning the same. The bad news is, they are not functioning as I hoped they would (and should IMO). O well, I've had them too long to return, so I turned off the email alerts.

rvgantt, you are not the only one. i also have two cams and both do the same thing. mine are both interior pointing but trigger all day as the sun changes the light level in the rooms.  i usually get a trigger when they change from day to night mode also. the video clip is like watching Wizard Of Oz. black and white scrne changes to color!  most of the triggers are on more subtle lighting changes as clouds change the light level in the room.

Any resolution to this problem? I have the same camera and having the same issue. My camera is inside pointing toward an interior wall. With the sensitivity set to 20 I am getting triggers every couple minutes but still can miss a person walking past the camera. I have tried 10 and it reduces the false alarms to just a few a day but misses most people walking by the camera and seems to only detect a person if they stop in front of the camera or are walking very slow. At 15 I still get too many false alarms. At 8 and 9 I stop detecting most people walking past the camera. I have tried reducing the detection area to a small portion of the image but it still behaves the same way.
