Title: DIR-655 w 3G USB modem does not connect
Post by: Vic Vega on January 27, 2010, 08:58:55 AM
Nothing happens when I try to connect.
Has anyone got the 3G connection working?
The FW release notes says "DIR-655A4EU". Does it still work with the A3 HW?
Any clues what could be wrong?  ???

Setup:
DIR-655A3 w DIR655Ax_FW131EUB02.bin (works fine w TP-WAN)
3G Modem: Huawei E1750 USB UMTS/HSDPA (works fine when connected direct to computer)
Network: Sweden, Telenor

Settings:
My USB type is: 3G USB Adapter
Internet Connect type: 3G USB Adapter
Dial: *99#
Authent: Auto
APN: internet.telenor.se
reconnect Mode: Always on
DNS1: empty
DNS2: empty

Can you see anything in the Logs ?
Is the router dialing ? Does the behavior of your Huawei change ? (LED color change or blinking ?)

If not, seems the router does not recognize this stick.
Only a few are supported.

Log
USB 3G: init

That is logged before the 3G modem was connected.
Nothing else relevant, I think

No other sign of any attempt do connect or dial.

LED
green double flash = Power On
the slow blue flash, no matter what I do

What do you think?

Huawei E1750 LED
1.   Power On----Green light double flash
2.   GPRS(GSM/GPRS/EDGE) Registered----Green light flash
3.   UMTS(WCDMA/HSDPA) Registered----Blue light flash
4.   GPRS Connected----Green light steady
5.   WCDMA Connected----Blue light steady
6.   HSDPA Connected----Cyan light steady
7.   USB hardware removed----LED off

It is the same with my ZTE Stick - it receives power and the blue LED blinking for UMTS signal found.
But in the Log no recognition.
I do not think the Huawei E1750 is supported though some Huawei models are known as working with the DIR.

Sorry if I'm making a stupid question but, is your SIM protected by a PIN? If so disable it using the management program of your PC.

No, I already disabled the PIN.

I have the same problem with a Huawei E182E (up to 16 Mbps)

Anyone knows where there is a list with supported 3G modems for the DIR-655??
I have been stalking around but can´t find such a list

I think you can see the below site to find if there have some questions to resolve the 3g modem (http://www.3gmodem.com.hk/) problem:

I had the same problem, only difference was I had a DIR-855 with Huawei E1550 3G modem. I could not get it to work at all. Worked fine when connected directly to my computer though.

So I bought the DWM-156 instead. Still, it did not work when I had the modem connected to the DIR-855. But the I tried the FW upgrade (DIR855A2_FW121EUB01Beta01.zip) from ftp://ftp.dlink.se/Products/dir-products/dir-855/drivers_firmware/ and lo and behold, not it works perfectly. This might not be applicable to you since you obviously got a DIR-655, but I thought I'd share this anyways.

After the FW upgrade and using the following settings, life is once again sweet:

Settings:
My USB type is: 3G USB Adapter
Internet Connect type: 3G USB Adapter
Country: Sweden
ISP: Telenor
Dial: *99#
Authentication: Auto
APN: internet.telenor.se
Reconnect Mode: Always on
DNS1: 204.194.232.200
DNS2: 204.194.234.200

Until now I doubted that it isn't possible to conect to an 3G modem through the usb port of the DIR-655. But this thread and the selection possibilities of my connection configuration put me right.

First of all, I would check the firmware and may update it to the newest (european) one - atm 1.32b01 (see here for the ftp links (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=6712.msg78644#msg78644)).

@luring: your swedish provider seems to define other configuration - especially the DNS data.

[EDIT]
Did you set the device-type in the settings? AFAIK have you to define the via usb connected device as '3G USB-Adapter'.
path: config page => setup => usb settings (http://192.168.0.1/Basic/USB.shtml (http://192.168.0.1/Basic/USB.shtml))
[/EDIT]

Another, simple, question: is at the routers location a connection to the mobile network possible?

... and if You by any chance get a strange error message, saying that the third ??? address should be a numeric value, try entering the DNS servers as 217.174.65.61 & 62 instead.

That made the trick on my DIR-825  (with the DWM-156)

When i bought my DIR-655, i ask the shopkeeper will this router work with 3g modem?
The shopkeeper told me it only work with Dlink's 3G modem and he recommend me to buy DWM-156 3G USB modem.
So i bought the Dir-655 and DWM-156 and they work perfectly well.

for support of other brand modem like Huawei it is better to get the Dir-412 or Dir-451 router.

Hi to Vic Vega and to all usb 3G modem user.
Good news ! you can connect your usb 3G modem to your DIR-655 but not all kinds of huawei 3G usb stick. i was so desperate trying to connect my huawei usb stick E177 with my dlink 655 for the last 2 days and was planning to return my dlink to the store until i found a way just now (10:56 am 03 june 2012) and so i want to share how i was able to make the 3g usb stick running with my DIR-655.

1. TRY USING OTHER HUAWEI USB STICK MODEL IF THE ONE YOU'RE USING DOESN'T WORK (I'M NOW USING HUAWEI E156G MODEL.
2. SETUP UP YOUR 3G USB ADAPTER ON YOUR ROUTER USING YOUR ISP PROVIDER INFO.
   A. CHOOSE YOUR COUNTRY
   B. YOUR ISP PROVIDER
   C. DON'T INPUT ANY USERNAME AND PASSWORD
   D. INPUT *99# ON THE DIAL NUMBER
   E. AUTHENTICATION: AUTO (PAP + CHAP)
   F: APN: INTERNET
   G. RECONNECT MODE: ALWAYS ON
   H. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY DNS: 0.0.0.0 (IF YOU DON'T KNOW)
   I. MTU: 1492
3. DON'T MIND THE STATUS IF YOU SEE CABLE AND NETWORK STATUS APPEARING DISCONNECTED
4. DON'T MIND IF YOU SAW THE CONNECT BUTTON IS STILL HIGHLIGHTED.
5. AS LONG AS YOU SEE YOUR 3G USB ADAPTER SHOWING A STEADY BLUE LIGHT ON IT, IT IS ALREADY CONNECTED TO YOUR ISP AND YOU CAN TRY CONNECTING YOUR INTERNET.
6. YOU CAN NOW SETUP AS FOR THE REST OF THE SETTINGS.

HOPE THIS COULD HELP.

Hi Chengfansoon.
Can you show a dir-655 setup for 3G USB modem? (e.g.  Print out of display)

This router come with firmware 1.30WW.
I heard some people upgrade their firmware and after that they are unable to use the 3G modem DWM-156 on this router.

The setting is very simple
On the USB type page, select 3G modem
than
APN = (given by your mobile internet provider)
dialup number = *99#
that is all the setting you need.
