Backup to USB drive: Built-in or rsync via ffp? Which FS?
« on: February 08, 2016, 05:40:48 AM »

Hi,

I just ordered another hard disk to be finally able to make an additional backup of my NAS (which I use mainly as a backup medium) at intervals for off-site storage.

Now, the question is whether to use the built-in function or rsync (which is installed on the NAS via ffp)? As I see it, the latter will only transfer changed files and possibly also give me the option to keep around an older version of deleted files just in case (as long as space lasts), so I tend toward that option. Any reasons against it? Any other thoughts?

On a different note, what FS would you recommend I format my external drive to?

Doesn't seem to be a pressing question on many people's mind. ;)

For the record: I formatted my drive to ext4 and went with the rsync method. First backup is currently running and almost finished. If anybody's interested after all, I can post my short script here.
