Title: Open Ports?
Post by: BAMoh on November 09, 2016, 12:50:18 PM
It seems this cam, unlike other DLINK cams, has opened ports 80 and 443. Why?
I have read this documented on Amazon by another customer as well. Am using latest firmware for the cam. No, there is nothing wrong with my router and computer.

From Amazon (for reference):

1.0 out of 5 stars Camera keeps 'calling home', January 15, 2016

[Update 1/20/2015]
I missed Dlink's support call since I didn't recognize the number. Then received a canned-response email to contact them if I continue having problems.

My only problem is Dlink needs to clarify the questionable network activity their camera displays, and they haven't taken the opportunity to do so. I have blocked their camera WAN access in my setup so I personally don't have an issue, but I believe most consumers would.

[Original Review]
This camera is terrific in almost every respect, one of the best in fact. Lovely wide angle. But there is one huge concern. The camera keeps 'calling home', making a lot of dubious connections to different IP servers on tcp port 443 (https), 80 (http), as well as some other higher ports. To addresses such as:

54.193.40.248
54.193.44.200
52.8.60.103
52.8.232.208

Everytime I block one of these on my router, a new one seems to pop up.

I don't know, my other IP cameras don't display such questionable behavior. These calls could very well be used for app functionality or the peer to peer connection, or sending some legitimate info, but you have to wonder. Perhaps D-Link would care to comment here about these unidentified connections, so I can raise my review rating.

In the meantime, make plans to block all WAN access from this camera if you decide to get it, and resort to a local NVR for access, or maybe just use VPN when you want to monitor it.

The IP addresses you listed all appear to be affiliated with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Could be something as innocent as the camera checking in to for firmware updates or the like (just guessing, as you said could be a lot of legitimate reasons). I am considering purchasing this, but would love to know if you ever contacted DLink and if so what they said. Seems like something they should have responded to directly in response to your review...

I contacted Dlink but haven't heard back from them yet, will do my best to update the review when they respond. To be honest the camera has a lot going for it and I will probably buy some more. But I am blocking all the extraneous WAN access, and using third party software for monitoring on the ports I choose.

Thank you for this review. Did you ever get a response of why this was "calling out"? I don't understand why manufacturers do this BY DEFAULT. Have a checkbox in the setup that says "make accessible via internet? [Y/N]" or something similar. I only want to use this on my lan. I don't trust the manufacturer (not specific to d-link, but any manufacturer) to make their product secure if exposed (or sending traffic) across the internet.

Is the camera associated with the MDL services?
What FW version is currently loaded?
