Not impressed with D-Link camera, app, or software
« on: September 05, 2014, 06:19:24 PM »

After seeing online how easy it is to setup a 930L, I picked one up..   Installed just fine (I think?)  I can view it on my Iphone 5s with Mydlinklite.   Visted the website Mylink to view the camera on desktop..  That where the "not impressed" come into play...   I can't get it to work, I can see my camera icon on the left, but it never loads, just sits and spins with the retry button keep poping up.   Googled the issue 50+ times with no real answers.   Ok so "not impressed" with the desktop viewing.
So after a few hours of messing with it, I'm less impressed with the app so I give newcamviewer app a try, guess what ?   Error !  Newcamviewer could not initialize the camera.   I see many have gotten this app to work with dlink camera's..  Guess I'm not a "nerd or geek".

Any suggestions, tips, hints, hammers, nails ??  This is/was my first d-link purchase and... not impressed, yet.

Help !

Ensure that your Java is up to date?

Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.
Be sure to log into the Admin account on the router.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

mydlink.com Supported Browsers
Internet Explorer 7 or higher (32-bit) - Add mydlink.com to the "Compatibility View" exceptions list.
Firefox 12 or higher
Chrome 20 or higher
Safari 6 or higher (Mac OS only)

Thanks for all the tips..

No dice, still can't get the mydlink to get past the "sit & spin/retry" stage, checked my current java updates it's cool, even downloaded firefox, no go.

Downloaded several apps, maybe 1/3 work & the rest give me some error.

I spoke with my dog, she's agreed to take my old iphone and snap a photo of any unusual behavior at the house and text me a pic, seems like that might be the more reliable method right now.

Any other tips/hints ?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Did you add a exception to Java's security list for MyDlink.com?
Can you test IE and see if it does the same thing.

Be sure to disable any browser add-ons and 3rd party PC security temporarily.

What FW version is currently loaded on the DCS?

Linksys wireless cable modem
farily certain I saw FW version 1.11 ?
Tested IE, FF, & Chrome
yes added mydlink.com to java approved list
turned off norton anti-virus

Also tested it on 6 month old laptop & got same results.  It works fine with IP Camera Viewer 2 by deskshare.. so I took those settings and plugged them into several apps & no go, error city.

Update...

Right now after talking with 14 year old nerd next door, our best guess is it's working less than 50% of the time when trying to access with mydlinklite app, 0% of the time with the mydlink website, & 99% of the time with the IP camera viewer 2 desktop program.   As the 14 year old explained to me, "dude your $35 camera has cost you over $100 in wasted time messing with apps & programs".

So a serious questions, no joke..   Can you suggest a brand and model of camera, needs to be affordable, easy to install (less than 3 hours), and work at least 90% of the time with BOTH iphone apps and windows desktop, I'd like to have option of adding cameras.   I know seems like a big wishlist !!

If you know anyone looking for a 930L wireless camera, drop me a PM, most likely selling cheap in next few days.   Comes with box and all the paperwork, and stuff it came with.

Thanks !!!
