DLink wireless network not showing up anymore!
« on: May 25, 2011, 06:15:31 AM »

Dear all:

I've tried changing the settings on my DLink wireless router, resetting it and my cable modem (by unplugging them and plugging them in again), and even restoring my iPod, but I cannot find my home wireless network! Both my iPod and my PC can find other networks, but not my own.

My network is WPA-2 only, which my iPod should be able to see. The cipher type is TKIP. My wireless channel is 2.437GHz (channel 6, I can't change it). I even tried resetting my network settings on my ipod, with no luck.

My router is a DLink DIR 615 wireless router and my computer is a PC that runs Windows 7. My sister tried to help, but even she could not fix it. The router is able to connect to the internet; it's just the wireless portion that isn't working.

Please help; I'm at the end of my rope here.

Thanks,

I presume your running mixed mode of a/b/g/n?
Have you set up a SSID name for the WiFi, you can change to be anything. Make it something familiar or fun.

Try changing to Single mode G with out any security to test and see if you can see the WiFi SSID name.
Get another device to test it out, this will help you troubleshoot if the router is working or possible the iPod is not working. Helps to try with a different device.

Let us know.

Sorry, but I'm new to this router stuff. What do you mean by mixed mode of a/b/g/n?

As for the SSID name, I've already chosen a name for it before, and it worked. Now, it's not working. I'm not sure what my sister tried, but she definitely tested it with her iPhone. I saw the network once and then it disappeared in a few seconds. My PC's wireless card can't see the network, either, though my PC itself connected to the router through wires.

Please help.

Thanks,

DO you know if the router was reset back to factory defaults using the button in back.
Has the routers WiFi and web page log in been secured and a password put in place? If it hasn't, someone could access the router and change the WiFi around and mess it up.

If you were to log into the routers web page, there are settings that you can use to configure the router and WiFi. I presume you might have used the CD to do this.

The mixed mode a/b/g/n is a broadcast mode for various devices. Most devices now days are using G and N. You can switch this mode to single mode g or mixed G and N.

If you can get this going, I would recommend finding a local trusted computer tech person to help you out.

Sometimes people and remote in to your PC and help out however in this case, sounds like that maybe the PC can't connect correctly. I would recommend a local person to help you.

My sister pressed the "reset" button. It still didn't work. As for security, it was set to WPA-2 only and we had a good password for the router. The web page log-in has a simple password, though. However, that no longer works, and we are now using WEP.

If you were to log into the routers web page, there are settings that you can use to configure the router and WiFi. I presume you might have used the CD to do this.

We didn't use the CD. We just logged into the router's web page.

The 802.11 mode is Mixed N and G.

Ok. I will pass this info to my sister.

Might try setting for single mode G with no security to test and see if you can get connected to the wireless.
Try using WPA and Auto Cypher mode aswell. WPA modes are preferred over WEP.

I presume a wired device works ok with the router?

Keep us posted. Hope it works out.

When I set it to have no security, it shows up and then disappears. I tried using WPA and Auto Cypher, but it does not show up at all there. The wired part of the router is OK, though.

Please help. I used that wireless connection to connect to a DELL Laptop that operated Mac OS X. Would that have been a problem? Also, I must confess that I did not dust the router regularly. Would dusting have helped prevent this problem?

This router is also serves as my wired Internet connection. That part is working fine.

DO other wireless devices like Laptops work on the wireless or do they also exhibit the same problem? If so then possible wireless is faulty on router. Glad wired is working.

If a Laptop can connect and maintain a connection and the iPod doesn't then I would presume the ipod is faulty.

You could get a wireless access point to add to the router on a wired connection, and this could be the new wireless for you. Turn off the internal WiFi on the router if you can find out that the routers wifi is faulty.

Dear all:

Thanks for your support. The wireless portion of the router is pretty much dead, so I found a workaround here:

http://grahamjw.wordpress.com/2010/03/30/ipod-touch-and-no-wireless-internet-access/

Since wired is working, this would be the best way to get wireless up and running again.

Thanks,

I would attached via wired a new Access point device to the LAN port of the router and use it as the new WiFi.
Other option would be to check out a new router with new WiFi.
