Trouble formatting Samsung HD103UJ
« on: April 15, 2008, 04:07:31 PM »

I currently have a 323 with two WD 750's running in standard configuration (i.e. not RAID). I tried replacing one with a new Samsung HD103UJ  1TB SATA drive. The 323 found it just fine and offered to format it... but when it finished and restarted claiimed to have again found an unformatted drive and again offered to format. If I skip the reformatting and go to status the drive is reported to be 7MB! A little off from 1TB.
Is this a case of an incompatible drive? Or is there some other problem I'm not considering?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, the 323 is using 1.04 firmware.

I've had a similar experience with my 250 MB Seagate Barracudas - I never figured out what caused it, but to fix it I had to connect the drives to a computer and delete all the partitions and start over.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Well, I'm beginning to suspect that compatibility is the issue. When I put the drive in a USB SATA enclosure the XP disc administration utility shows me that the DNS-323 created three partitions.. one of which was the 7MB one that it recognized.
And it did it each time I removed the partitions and tried again. I also tried formating in NFTS and reformated to EXT2 in the DNS... with exactly the same result.
If there are any experts out there, could you answer me this... if I formatted the drive to EXT2 via some other means... what are the chances it would work in the DNS?

Thanks

There is a chance it would work, but you would have to create the exact partition layout that the DNS-323
expects on the drive:
partition 1 - a swap partition
partition 2 - a data partition
partition 4 - for print spooling (I think?)

Well, that sounds doable, but a bit more complicated then I was hoping. Anybody have any idea what the partition sizes would have to be on a 1TB drive?

I have an 80GB disk in my DNS-323 FW v1.04 HW vB1, the partitions look like this:
Code: [Select]
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks  Id System
/dev/sda1               1          66      530113+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/sda2             131        9729    77103967+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda4              67         130      514080  83 Linux
It looks like:
the first 66 cylinders are allocated to a primary partition #1, type 82 Linux swap
the next 64 cylinders are alloaded to an extended parition #4, type 83 Linux
and the rest of the disk is allocated to a primary parition #2, type 83 Linux

Please try inserting the drive into you PC and remove all partitions a try again in the DNS-323. This drive has not been tested so I do not know for sure if it is a compatibility issue at this point. Have you tried this drive in your PC to make sure it is a working drive?
