Problem after updating to fw 1.04
« on: November 14, 2013, 05:10:34 PM »

Hi,

First, great that this forum exist !
Now, the bad: I received fews days ago my DIR-868L (fw1.0 or it was 1.1?) and just did the update to fw 1.04 yesterday. So, I didnot tested it much long with fw1.01 but, as far as I can tell, when I was connecting a USB flash drive or HDD in the usb port, it appeared immediately in Windows Explorer/ Network Folder by the side of my main PC and Laptop and so, directly from the Windows Explorer I could share files from the USB flash drive on my network.
Now, after updating to fw 1.04 (I did a reset before and after), just buggy things are happening. For example, the USB flash drive - while connected - will disappear at one point from my Network Folder and  even if I disconnect-reconnect the USB flash drive, it will not reappear anymore !
Unless I change some important settings in the Router (doing a reset or, sometimes activating USB 3.0), the USB flash drive will be no more visible in my Network Folder. However, all this time it will still be detected in the Storage section of the D-Link Web Setup and I can still access it by SharePort Web Access.
This is really frustrating and I start wondering if my DIR-868L is not defectuous...
or may be I could try with fw 1.02 and see if the problem is still there ?

Any other suggestions of what I could do ?
I am on Windows7 SP1 64bit

thanks

John

Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

What Mfr is size is this flash drives?
Formatting NTFS?

You could try downgrading and see. Do a factory reset before and after sending the FW file. Be sure to disconnect the drives from the USB port while doing the downgrade.

Well i connected my 250Gb external USB drive to my 868L with v1.04. I get the 868L Media Device icon in networking when connected. I can map drive to 192.168.0.1\Usb name found under routers web page Storage section and I can connect to the drive this way as well. Granted it doesn't seem to automatically appear as I believe windows has to log into the router and give credentials. It's woking here.

Hi, Thanks  for looking into it

it's a small 8GB - NTFS

The problem was maybe just password related. Anyway, for some reasons, I had to shut down the router and disconnect-reconnect everything and now my flash drive or USB HDD stay listed in my Network, except it take more times to appear in my wireless laptop. I will see if it keep like this.
This is my first "real" router and there is a lot of settings/options that are actually beyond my knowing but it seems it's the right place to learn here  ;)....
I am now with Xplornet/Wimax and as their modem does all the NAT, I tried to put the DIR-868L in bridge mode and diseable NAT to avoid double NAT proccess as I use Skype and do use some VPN too.
Well, it just killed my wireless Network. Should I change some of my IP address in bridge mode if my router doesnot do NAT anymore ? I have no idea how to configure the router in bridge mode neither if it is worth the trouble...

Can your ISP modem be bridged. Thats preferred if possible

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

If this isn't possible, then you could use the 868L in wired AP mode:
Turning a router into an AP.

I will call them, but I recall to have read that it was not possible.

I will look at the AP mode

Thanks

Hi FN

it is said that if the modem address is  192.168.0.#, then it is not bridged. Does it has to be exactly "192.168.0"+# (mine has a different number for the 0) ? and if different does it means that the modem is bridged ?

Otherwise, my Internet connexion and VOIP seems quite good so maybe there is no need for me try AP mode. And I have been trying to resolve another more important issue that is that I cannot access my Flash drive from the internet outside home.
"SharePort Web Access" is enable  and also "Allow Remote Access" (don't know if it is necessary ?) and  then if I use the SHAREPORT ACCESS LINK outside home from another computer , I simply get the error "internet explorer cannot display the web page". I have try from different computer and browser.
However, if I do a Ping (from system check) it  is alive.
What hidden settings could prevent me to access my flashdrive? And I want do be able to do it even if my PC is shutdown.

If your modem has the same 192.168.0.# address scheme, or that status page on the route shows a 192.168.0.# under the WAN section, then the ISP modem is not bridged and the ISP Modem is acting as the main host router. Other numbers could be used depending on what ISP or Modem Mfrs design, I've seen 10.0.0.0 and 172.#.#.# as well. Most generally modems are in the 192.168.0. or 192.168.1. range by default.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Eh, not sure if having the modem info will help. With my prior knowledge of SAT internet, those modems can't be bridged I don't believe.

Does the modem have a DMZ?
It's possible DMZ may help here however not sure...your main problem is having a Double NAT condition here and accessing the USB device on the 868L router can't happen until the double NAT condition is degraded to a single NAT.

Is the 868L getting a IP address on the WAN side? is it a 192.168.0.#? Try changing the 868L routers IP address from 192.168.1.254. This will change the LAN side IP address scheme as well however that's ok too. Just reboot all devices.

I tried to find out which model it was searching on the Internet but I could not find any info but I recall to have read in some forums that it was not brigeable.

The IP address on the Wan section is 192.168.209.#
I have tried to change the LAn Ip to 192.168.1.254 but I am getting error message :invalid DHCP reservation IP address ?

Ok, what I was afraid of.

Do you have IP address reservations saved? You'll need to remove them or edit them before changing over to .1.254.

Does this modem have a DMZ option?

So I called Xplornet and it is a BreezeMax Pro 6000 CPE

I found its spec :
Networking Features
Device Management   Web, TR-069
Firewall      Supported
WAN       DHCP client
Networking    NAT / Multi-Host
        DSCP Classifications
        Management DSCP anti spoofing
        ETH CS/VLAN CS
        IP CS Bridge Mode
        DSCP Classification per tagging
        VLAN and marking 1P
        Special Application DMZ Host,
        VLAN tagging +1P marking Per
        PPPoE DSCP Values
ND&S       Quick scan
        Frequency range scans
        (start/Stop, main step)
        Full band Scan
VPN       Pass through:
        IPSec, PPTP, L2TP, PPPo

As a solution they could give me a Static IP but it would cost me 10$ a month  :o
I did found the manual of the CPE 6000 and it is totally configurable, it has even DMZ options, but access to the router configuration is of course completely locked. As I have read on a forum it is a good way for them to make money by giving us no choice to take Static IP when you really need incoming connections - which is not my case actually.
So, no much solution left and changing the IP  of my router will do nothing I suppose ?

Thanks for the help

Well if you can convince them to put an IP address that the 868 gets from this modem into the DMZ, this might help.

Your options are limited. You could turn the 868 into a wired AP however you won't be able to access the USB drive or mydlink.com with it in this mode.

I think changing the IP of the router wont do anything. Possible DMZ could help. Your at the mercy of your ISP and this ISP modem unfortuneately.  :(
