Router won't go past 600Mbit on 1gbit connection.
« on: November 08, 2017, 11:45:42 AM »

Howdy folks, I'm hoping there's still plenty of DIR-645 owners around, I'm wondering if anyone else is on a 1Gbit internet connection with this router? I'm finding that when I run a speedtest it won't go past 600Mbit if I'm connected using the router but if I'm connected directly to the fiber modem/router from the ISP then I'm getting almost 1Gbit on speedtest.net

This is via the DIR-645 router:

This is via the ISP's fiber router:

I've tried resetting the firmware to the factory defaults but I'm not really sure what else might help so don't want to go playing around willy nilly!

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions :)

1.06

  • What region are you located?

Portugal, router was bought in Sweden originally and I brought it with us when we moved here.

Altice Labs Fiber Gateway GR241AG

  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS

I'm pretty sure none of that stuff is enabled on the 645, never heard of "GameFuel".

If the main ISP fiber ONT is being used I recommend using the 645 as a wired LAN to LAN AP and not a router:
Turning a router into an AP.

I have a home network of PC - Media player - Smart TV so I use the router for the whole home network so I can transfer video files to the movie player in a different room to watch on the TV, not sure how turning the router into an AP would benefit me, sure I would use the fiber modem and remove the Dlink router completely but that defeats the object of having bought a (supposed) gigabit router, plus the router is more configurable than the ISP's fiber modem.

If the ISP Fiber modem/router has a DMZ, place the IP address the 645 gets on it's WAN port into the ONTs DMZ. Disable QoS, DNS Relay and test.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
>WAN and LAN Connection Rates and ISP Speeds FAQ

Gigabit means that the connection rates on the LAN and WAN ports are 1000mb or 1Gb supporting. This is a physical connection rate of the RJ45 cables and any LAN connected device only. This differs from actual data throughput flow thru the pipe. This is a older router and most older routers may not be able to handle actual 1Gb throughput data flow speeds on the WAN. NAT HW acceleration support which is seen in newer generation routers is needed to help with actual data flow speed rates thru the pipe which this model router may not have.

Yes DMZ'ing the router via the fiber modem was one of the first things I did simply because I have the router set up just how I want it with forwarded ports etc. etc. :)

This is a older router and most older routers may not be able to handle actual 1Gb throughput data flow speeds on the WAN.

I thought this might be the case, it also seems to be having trouble getting IP6 data from the ISP modem and it's also having an issue where every hour or so it seems to forget what DNS is and be unable to access any websites for about 30 seconds, can routers get dementia? Think mine might be!

I haven't seen routers loose internet persea, I presume that there maybe a configuration issue or the router is encountering some kind of compatibility issue. I've had mine since day one and used here and there. However I stopped using it after my ISP graduated me to 200.10 since the 645's QoS is only rated for 100/10 I believe. I presume maybe your hitting a max limitation of the routers CPU as well and just not really able to handle the 1Gb thru put on the WAN port. At most I've seen current routers get to 900+- Mb on  the wan port. So there now just hitter there physical limits

I would give a try to the 645 as an AP and connect a wired LAN cable to the LAN port and see if speeds are same or not effected. I believe the CPU and thruput handling is at play here on your 1Gb service. Again, HW NAT acceleration is needed for ISP speed 1Gb and beyond. Also CAT6a cabling and 10Gb NICs and switches will be the next leap beyond 1Gb to 10Gb.

Just wanted to pop back to send a huge thanks your way for the suggestion, this fixed it completely! Set it up as an AP and these are the results:
