Same drives for RAID0/Mirror?
« on: January 28, 2013, 05:33:20 AM »

Hello,

I just got the 320L which came with a 2TB Seagate Barracuda drive. I wish to add an additonal drive to the box and set it up with RAID0 / mirror the drives.

Should the drives be of same make and model, or can I just add another 2Tb SATA drive (which similar speed)?

Thanks, K

Ideally, it's always best to use the same HDD make/model/capacity, but this is not required. The DNS-320L should work fine with two different makes/models.

You mention in your post that you want to set up with "RAID0 / mirror the drives." RAID-1 is a mirror and RAID-0 is a striped single volume spanning both HDDs. Before you make your decision, you may want to read the following sticky post: DNS-320L - Data Backup vs. Redundancy

Many thanks for your answers.
It is me who is wrong (most likely) with the RAID. It is mirroring which I am after. :)

If you're looking to create a mirror, then you should use RAID-1. Please carefully read the post linked in my prior response before committing to your decision.

Sorry, but it looks like I copied the wrong material in the post I referred to you!   :-[
