HELP - Router has stopped working
« on: January 22, 2012, 10:03:48 PM »

Hi this is my first time asking for help on any tech site – usually I am able to Google and figure it out myself but this time I am stumped, and it is driving me insane. Be warned, I have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about.

I have a Dlink DIR-615 wireless router that up until a few days ago was working perfectly. Then I had to turn it off at the wall before a storm and it has stopped working. I have tried resetting it with no luck. I am able to get internet try to get onto on my desktop without the router.

I have tried to connect to 192.168.0.1 it won’t let me. I can’t get on there with an internet connection either. As soon as I connect the router the default gateway disappears.

Here is the information from the command prompt without the router plugged in:

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

What Hardware version is your router? Version C2
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Do I have to log on to 192.168.0.1 to get to this because I can't. The connection times out.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable
What ISP Modem make and model do you have? Motorola Surfboard 4200

Most of the things you asked me to try I do not understand. Maybe a more dummy version? Sorry :(

Lets try a factory reset of the router.

Try using a different browser like Opera or FF. If using IE 8 or 9, set the compatibility mode for IE.

Need to access the routers web page if you can.

I have reset the router and have used both IE and FF for accessing the webpage. What are some reasons for not being able to access it?

Router is hung up, 3rd party firewall blocking by chance? Bad LAN cabling. Your PCs NIC network settings are static and not set to Auto Obtain. Just a few things.
