Determining IP address of the DAP-1320 on a public network
« on: October 25, 2013, 08:29:28 AM »

Android devices cannot make use of the .local naming scheme. So when the dap is connected to a network that I do not control and I cannot look up the IP address that has been assigned to the dap, I cannot connect to the web config UI.

I am looking for a way to determine the assigned IP address for the dap. All of the utils that I have tried seem to return either the gateway address (which inevitably is the server address that the dap has connected to) or the IP address that has been assigned to the device I am using, not the DAP IP that my device is actually connected to.

Anyone know of a way to identify the IP address of the dap on a public network when using an android device?

Thx.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DAP? Look at sticker under DAP.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DAPs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

The default IP address usually is 192.168.0.50 to access it's web page. However the main host router may assign different one as well from his IP address pool. You'll need to refer to the main host router for any IP addresses listed there for the DAP.

Firmware 1.11
Hardware A1
Region Canada

After a reset, 192.168.0.50 works just fine until the dap goes and connects to a selected network where the dhcp server then assigns it a new IP address. It is this new IP address that I need to identify so that I can connect to the web config.

Since I do not have control over the public network I cannot access the router to look up the assigned IP.

Once it connects to this public network, you would need to have someone look at the main host router to see what IP address it's getting from that router. I presume it's no longer getting a 192.168 address and thus the .50 address may not work any more.

What mode is the 1320 being used in for this? Repeater? or wired AP?

It is not possible and wholly unfeasible to ask a hotel or conference center what IP has been assigned to a device.

Your assumption is correct, the dap is being assigned an IP within a range of available IPs defined within the dhcp config by whoever setup and manages the network.

The dap-1320 is strictly a wifi network extender. It cannot be used in wired mode and it cannot be switched out of extender mode.

Well if you use the wizard to set up the DAP and get it connected. You should be able to connect to it with your client device and get services thru it. Might check the user manual for any information on this when in extender mode. There may not be a way to do any configurations in extender mode since it relies upon an gets it's wireless information from the main host router and passes the signal and such on to the connecting devices.  :-\

Thanks for your input but it is clear that you do not have specific experience with or knowledge of this device. If I use a windows system that supports .local addressing then I can connect to the dap-1320 and finish the setup configuration after it initially connects to the selected wifi network and gets its new IP address.

What I am asking for is advice on how to accomplish the same goal on an android device that does not support .local addressing. I need to figure out what IP address has been assigned to the DAP by whatever router it has connected to. I know this is going to be difficult as I have been trying to figure it out for more than a month with no success.

This is probably an issue that dlink will need to address in a future firmware update. The dap probably needs to identify itself to all devices that connect to its extended wifi network as the primary gateway rather than allowing the original networks gateway to be listed.

There has to be a way to identify the dap IP on the extended network. I don't need configuration or setup help, I know what I'm doing and the dap is working as expected, it's just that when I use an android device I cannot access the setup UI without an IP address that I can't figure out how to determine. I don't really want to travel with an extra windows laptop just to configure the extender.

I would recommend that you phone contact D-Link support and ask if there are specifc ways to use an Android to connect to the web page in this manor when in Extended mode. It may not be supported. Call and ask.

Let us know if you find out anything.

Good luck.

I have called dlink everyday for 5 days. Each time I am told that my issue needs to escalated to a level 2 tech and I will get a call back sometime within the next 24 hours for 5 days in a row, no one called me back. On day 5 I insisted that I be connected to level 2, and was. This person was clearly reading from a problem solving script. She wanted to update firmware, assign stastic IP addresses to the windows devices and preferred to deal only with windows devices as I suspect android is not officially supported.

This I why I've asked in the forum. I am hoping that some android tablet users have encountered this issue and have figured out a work-around.

Thx for your time.

Ok, thanks for letting me know you phoned in already. I've forwarded this to my contact at D-Link. Is there a case # for this by chance? If so please PM me this info and I'll get it to my contact.

Thank you for your patience.

Just to finish up the thread...

Problem solved - the problem is unsolvable.

Because the dap-1320 is only acting as a dhcp client and not an actual dhcp server for the extended network it creates, there is no way for it to act as a default gateway and thus no way for it to report its own IP address.

The dap relies on the actual public/private network router to perform all dhcp functions and the dap only acts as a signal strengthening passthru device instead of an actual bridge between the two networks.

I'm off to see if I can find a wifi only router that does not require a hardwired WAN connection.

Try one of the DIR 500 series, they do Router, HotSpot and Repeater functions.

Seems like the 1320 is only a extender. Thank you for sharing and I'll remember this.

Let us know what you get.
