Author Topic: Is it worth the money to upgrade from a DWA-142 to DWA-160?  (Read 13305 times)

I have a DIR-655 router.

My network has to run at "g" mode since we have a laptop with a "g" adapter.

My connection is running at an acceptable speed. (about 2700 KBPS).  It seems faster though than what the speed test says.

If you have a 142, why don't you run the router in multimode. You can have N and G at the same time.

Actually, I am running it in mixed mode.

What encruption are you using?
You should only run the AES cipher. That will ensure N speeds.

Currently running AES.  I thought if I have a "g" adapter in the network, it will slow everything down to "g" speeds.

The laptop with the "g" adapter has almost twice as fast internet speed as my computer set up with the DWA-142.

Unfortunately, my computer is an IBM NetVista all in one computer and I can not add a PCI adapter. Stuck with USB.

No, you should have the ability to have both the N client connect at N speeds and the G client connect at G speeds asuming that the G client ca support the wpa/wpa AES cipher.

Any ideas how to increase the speed of my connection?

Which connection are you trying to speed up?  Internet access connection is limited to the access speed that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) agreement states and the high-speed "modem" unit Ethernet connection.  Most high-speed "modem" units can usually only run at 10 / 100 Ethernet "wire" speeds.

The internet speed of the computer with the DWA-160.

Follow what Lycan suggests.   The router is the one whom controls the speed and if the 11b signals are on, then everything "seems" to slow down.

Yes, it is worth the money...

First of all, the DWA-160 is a dual band 11n card, so to get the most out of a setup with this card, you need to have a dual band 11n router (DIR-855 in th EU). This is to devide up your wireless load onto two bands (the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz).

You should never have the IEEE802.11b mixed with 802.11g or 802.11n. the 11b has a complete different modulation than the 11g and 11n and will drastically slow your wireless network down.

If you must mix, use the setting "11n and 11g only". the differences between 11g and 11n are not in the modulation of the signal, but in the way the data is sent, so this will not have such a big impact on your performance. Having a 11g unit transmitting in your 11n environment will effect the performance, but not so much.

One more thing to consider is that 11n must care about neighbouring 11g networks, so place your channel as far away from the souronding 11g networks as possible. If the router hears an 11g unit close to it's own frequency, it is forced to lower the channel width to 20MHz instead of the faster 40MHz.

Just a tip.. ;)
