So after having it for a few days seems that the DHCP issue is defiantly resolved in 1.2.

DHCP is assigning all the IP's to the various devices each time they connect :)

Only thing I would like is a list of the reserved IP's (like the lists for firewall rules), just so you dont have to click to check each one :)

Both.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. The EU users need to get the beta from there region. You should be able to get it from support on the phone. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

Let us know how it goes please.

Its not exactly a cheap piece of equipment and im really disapointed this kind of huge bug can go through QA - wondering if i should return the unit.

Ill contact dlink support tomorrow if i have the time. Thank you for your fast reply.

You might ask Pegasus if he still has a copy while you wait for official support.

Re: DIR-880l DHCP
« Reply #27 on: September 11, 2014, 07:10:05 PM »

I also am having big issues with the DHCP server on the DIR-880.  I sent the email below to DLink support on Sept 5th (one week ago) and have received no response at all.  This is unlike them since tech support for my old DIR-655 support has been great, even years after I bought it.  Maybe they simply have no answers yet?

Here is a copy of what I sent to support.  I've edited the message below for clarity since I sent it to them.  Is anyone else seeing the same things?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems impossible to reserve specific IP addresses for specific devices in the DHCP server in the DIR-880L, Rev: 1.01.

I have about 50 devices on my LAN.  Some (like IP cameras, printers, servers, access points, main router) are static.  My PC's and wireless devices are dynamic. My DHCP server range is limited from 192.168.xx.60 through .xx.160  I have a number of port forwarding rules that reference devices that are assigned dynamic IP addresses, but they obviously have to receive the same IP address each time they are connected.  So having DHCP reservations are essential to me.  My old DIR-655 did this, no problem.

The new method of trying to reserve DHCP addresses is truly awful and doesn't work.

Here are some issues I have noticed so far:

1) The "connected clients" list also shows devices outside of the DHCP range that are assigned static IP addresses. They look exactly the same as the dynamically assigned IP nodes.  They should be flagged as static IP, don't you think?

2) The clients almost all show up as "Unknown" with "Unknown Vendor".  The MAC address is not shown.  How can one possibly determine which device is which?  At least you should show the MAC address!
NOTE:  When I run FING on my LAN, it can determine the vendor of almost all my devices. If this free LAN discovery tool can display MAC addresses & vendors, shouldn't the DIR-880L be able to do so as well?

3) Some of the devices don't show up.  eg: on my LAN, 192.168.xx.146 has never appeared on the client list.  This IP address is within the DHCP range.  The node is alive and I can ping it and communicate with it.  It can send emails out through the WAN.  But it isn't on the DIR-880L client list.  So I have no hope of assigning a static IP to it.

4) I can't change an existing dynamically assigned IP address to reserve a different one.  If I type in my desired IP address, it is overridden with the existing IP.  I can only reserve the IP that happens to be assigned to the device right now?

5) No KICK (Revoke) function to force a device to get a new IP address.

6) No indication whether a reservation attempt was successful. Is an IP address on the client list actually reserved? or static? or subject to change at any time? There is no way to tell.  There is no DHCP reservation table that I can view.

7) Your support videos and FAQs for DIR series routers describe how to reserve DHCP addresses on all your previous routers.  But you have nothing for the DIR-880L.  (Maybe because this function simply doesn't work anymore?)

8)  The "Connected Client" screen rewrites itself every few seconds, which is expected.  I currently have 35 devices active on my LAN.  The nodes are solid and my network is stable.  However the client list varies each cycle, sometimes displaying  as few as 7 clients, sometimes 26.  And all number of nodes in between.  (But the router never actually manages to display all of my nodes!)  So the node you were about to try to edit may disappear or move somewhere else in the client list.  There is no discernable order to the list.

-----------------

Please generate a F/W revision ASAP that restores the old DHCP reservation functionality.  I had actually been hoping for a larger DHCP table in this new router.  It appears that I now have no useable reservation table at all.

OTHER ISSUES:
1) Accessing the GUI on this router does not always reset the "log off" timer.  Even when I am actively entering data into the router, it will log off periodically, wiping out any changes made on the current page.

2)  Why are there only 15  Port Forwarding and 15 Virtual Server rules on the DIR-880L ??  Even my old DIR-655 had 24 of each.  I don't happen to need all of them, but other users might.  Why cripple the new router, particularly since it (should) have so much more hardware resources available?

I really feel like boxing this thing up and returning it, but I'm willing to wait if it looks like DLink is actually making an effort to fix this.

Link>Welcome!
  • What region are you located?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Lets try the following:
Factory reset the router. Turn OFF ALL devices accept for one wired LAN PC.
With out changing the default DHCP IP address pool, reserve the IP address for the PC. Then turn ON the next device and reserve it's IP address. Keep graduating adding and reserving devices.
Usually D-Links home class routers are reserved to only 25 reservations. I recommend that for some of your devices, like any NAS, cameras, printers, controllers, VoIP and phones, set them up on a static IP address on the device. Then set up reserved IP addresses for more high priority devices like PCs, Streamers and game consoles. This helps spread out the IP addressing application on our network with the router. Not all devices need a reservation especially for those that don't need high priority or heavy traffic access with the internet or be managed by the router.
>DHCP

The UI differs from the older DIR series UI and thus features may differ as well or may not be seen or differ in design. Possible that sliding the reserve slider to unreserve the IP address now works as well to "revoke" IP addresses. Or the revoke function just may not be a feature with this new UI.

When reserving the IP address you should be able to edit the name and IP address that you want before using the slider. I believe that once the slider is moved, it should be recorded and populated to the device after the device is power cycle, the desired IP address should be seen on the device. The behavior of the reservation may differ from other DIR series since this is a new UI and design.

HW name identification may take longer than expected to correctly populate and display what the devices are. There maybe some FW issues which will be looked at by D-Link.

As for the log out timer, I think 3 minutes is all that D-Link allows due to there security policies, this is seen across most of the DIR series routers and will probably not be changed.

Support Suggestion:
I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

Hi Furry,
Here are the results of my latest tests.
FYI,
I am located in Canada.
I tried one factory reset and complete reconfiguration from scratch using the original F/W (1.01).  This is a long and unpleasant process.  It made no difference.

It seems that there are three versions of the F/W out there.
1.01 12-Jun-2014  (Came with the router.)
1.01 07-Jul-2014   (On CA website.  What's with two different dates for the SAME F/W rev ?)
1.02 beta01   08-Aug-2014

When I tried the router's own UPGRADE F/W function, it said that I already had the latest installed .  (It had 1.01 12-Jun).

Since my original post, the beta showed up on the website so I upgraded the router with 1.02B01 before the latest tests.  I didn't do yet another Factory Reset after the upgrade to 1.02.  (Does this new router require a Factory Reset after every F/W upgrade?  )

The beta was a slightly different edit screen when trying to assign a reserved IP address.  BUT IT STILL DOESN'T WORK.

1) I turned off as many devices as possible.  (The only ones left on were STATIC IP's outside the range of the DHCP server. )

2) I rebooted my isy (the client device), forcing it to get a new IP from the router.  It finally showed up on the router's client list.
3) I toggled the Reserve IP slider and entered a new IP.  I saved it.
4) New IP didn't take.  So I rebooted the Router.  And the isy.  Several times.
5) Each time I look at the isy Client entry, the "Reserved" slider is off and the previous (automatically assigned) ip address is there again.  The SAVE doesn't work.
6) By the way, editing the client list is still a horrible chore since the number of clients still jumps wildly every screen update cycle. meaning that each entry can disappear and/or jump around.  It's like playing Whack-a-mole trying to find and hit EDIT on any client before it disappears and pops up somewhere else!

MY PROBLEM:  I have a large number of devices that expect my isy to be at xxx.xxx.xxx.146.  But I now have no way to reserve this IP.  So I shrunk the router's DHCP range and made my isy device STATIC.   I can get away doing this with this device, but I have lots of devices that need to move to other networks.

So, the router DHCP reservation feature wasn't working before the F/W update (1.01) and it still isn't working now under 1.02-B01.

I have never had to reboot any of my previous routers each time I assigned a DHCP reservation.  (It doesn't work anyway!)

The part about this being a new UI with "new features" doesn't fly.  The fact that other users have been forced to use the DHCP servers on other devices on their LANs speaks volumes about the shortcomings  of the DIR-880L DHCP server.  It's bad.  Really bad.  Please use your influence to get it turned back into something useful.  Soon.

Thanks.
Frank

By the way ... all the bugs/shortcomings mentioned in my original posting still apply to 1.02.  I will call up telephone support to let them know how I feel about these problems.
