Extending the Range of the 655?
« on: March 30, 2011, 05:13:06 AM »

I have a dumb question. We currently use the DIR 655 in our home. I has a great range, and we've never had any problems. Our house is a very tall Victorian, so some areas don't get as strong a signal as others. I'd like to set up a few addition devices to extend the coverage of our network.

I installed a DAP 1522 as a bridge to our entertainment PC. After a while of trying to sort out how to configure it everything is working there. The 1522 is connected to the PC via cable.

I still want to extend the overall wireless range to better cover the lower floors and back porch.

From reading the manual on the 1522 I am a bit confused. I understand how it works as a bridge, connecting devices via cable. Will it also extend the range is set as an Access Point without needing the devices to connect via cable?

Do you have a 665 or a 655 router?  ???

It's the 655. Sorry for the typo.

What I want to know is, what device should I get to extend the range of the 655? Will another 1522 work, or should I get something else? If so, what?

I got myself a Edimax repeater.

What you need is a wireless repeater, they usually cost around $25.

Thanks! I now know what to look for. The first item I've found, the DAP-1360, has terrible reviews on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DAP-1360-Wireless-Range-Extender/product-reviews/B0036VO70O/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1.

I still haven't chosen a repeater unit as they all seem to have problems. One thing I've read here and there is that they will cut my overall bandwidth in half. Is this true?

Would be better to just get another 655 and configure it as a repeater? Can you do that?

I'm in an almost identical situation, but am severely "technically inhibited", is there a product that I could get that I could install in a room on the ground floor at the back of the house that will pick up the wifi (wirelessly without an ethernet cable) and extend my wireless to the back garden of my house?

OK, think I've found a solution to this. I'm picking up an Edimax EW-7416APn tomorrow that I got for $35 off a local add site. I emailed Edimax support and they say it will work no problem with the DIR-655 in universal repeater mode. I'll post back when I have it installed.

This thread seems to be dead, but if the original poster is still interested I think the Edimax is EXACTLY what hes looking for!!! Installed it today in under 2 minutes. The only confusion was I thought that I would still have to be logged on to my wireless network, but another network shows called "Edimax network".Just input the same key you put into the settings when installing on the network and there you go! I actually have the Edimax in a log cabin at the end of my 50ft garden at the back of the house, about as far away from the router as possible, and the signal strenght is as good as it gets on my laptop in the cabin. Tested it out watching a few HD trailers online and not as much as a mili-second of freezing. Great product at a great price!!! ;D

Cool beans. I'll look into that product. I'm still not sure if/how much, bandwidth is cut using a repeater though. I see conflicting accounts in what I've read so far.
