Feature Request: DSM-510 and MPEG4 Part 10 AVC/H264 Video
« on: April 01, 2008, 11:24:26 AM »

Ok, let me just ask. I think this box is quite wonderful, especially at the current street prices. It plays everything it promises to do, at least everything I have tried. One thing would definitely make it cross into the near perfect category: the ability to play what I am reading is one of the most advanced compression out there: MPEG 4 Advanced Video Coding, aka H264, or MPEG4 Part 10. This is the format for the iPod video and Directv HD, among others. I think that a DVD juke box re-coded in AVC would probably be the most efficient, space wise, for a given quality.

Would D-Link even consider releasing an H264 decoder in the 510 as part of a future firware upgrade? Would its performance be ok for some HD, say 720p? Is there enough horsepower to even consider this in software?

Speaking for myself, I would say that I would be ok to stick with the existing container (MPEG2) if it meant getting this new video decoder sooner. Of course, one can dream and also request that the .mkv container be supported as well. The MPEG4 container seems less appealing as it does NOT support AC3/Dolby Digital.

PS: I am aware that MPEG4 Part 2/ASP is supported, Divx/Xvid and all, but the compression is supposed to be somewhat inferior to AVC.

PPS: I am also aware that there are transcoding UPNP AV servers out there, but I want to eventually migrate to an always-on NAS with UPNP AV built in, and not keep an always-on PC.

Best to everybody, great forum.

The H.264 format is supported on the DSM-750 I do not know if it will ever be added to the support list for the DSM-510 at this time. I believe it is due to the processor on the DSM-510's limitations. However this format has been forwarded as a feature request if possible on the DSM-510.

Thank you very much for the quick response. I would love to see this feature make it in an upcoming release of the firmware.

MKV and x264 files will play on the 510 NOW.........I'm using the brand new (latest version) of TVersity and I'm watching a .mkv file right now......it works great and clearly is a software issue as far as being able to watch .mkv HD files on the DSM-510.......Give it a whirl, works great for me.........WHY Dlink couldn't figure this out is beyond my comprehension..........

This is for D-Link stuff...

I'm working as Sales Manager and PM for AT, D-Link, Brand-Rex and few other brands in largest distribution company in my country. How do you expect me to sell DSM-510 without support for MKV format? And yes... Add better support for subtitles... SRT for example?

Pls, check on WD WDTV... It has excellent MKV support and excellent subtitle support... They thought about what will sell their product...You don't help us with answers like ''That request is added to feature request list''... We want to see action.

+3 more voices for MKV support in DSM-510 from my collegians...

The DSM-510 does not have the ability to support .mkv the processor used in this device does not support .h264 If you use Tversity as your media server the media server can be configured to do transcoding on the fly and will allow you to playback mkv. The DSM-750 out latest digital media adapter and supports .h264 and mkv.

Yeah, and cost how much? 70% more then DSM-510!!! 70% more money just because it has newer CPU, and it's bigger then my netbook, like I want to show it...
Give me a break, please...

DSM-510 is based on Sigma's EM8620L-LF... The CPU with the SAME pinout is EM8622L... Couldn't you just make DSM-515 with EM8622L and little modified firmware? Of course, SI 9030 is not manufacturing anymore, but you can replace it with some more capable HDMI transmiter... Price will be 10-15% more then now, but that's ok.
