Optimum setting ideas
« on: October 16, 2011, 11:52:05 AM »

Hello,

I've had my dgl-4500 for several years now and have been very happy with it. I've never really messed with a lot of the settings because I have a decent connection (15mbps) and I don't have much lag at all. I've been considering tinkering with things lately. I used to do most of my gaming in my man cave where everything is hard wired (360, and my ps3 when it is down there) but I've recently started gaming upstairs wirelessly on my slim 360 and my ps3. I want to make sure I have the optimum settings for my gaming upstairs. My kids sometimes play simultaneously on the 360 online downstairs. We don't have any connection issues at all, I guess I've just recently noticed maybe a slight bit of lag when playing upstairs from time to time. We have a large family, so sometimes there can be 2 xbox's, a latop, desktop, and maybe a few phones all connected at one time. I just want to make sure I'm getting optimum performance out of this thing. Let me know what you think please. One other thing I should mention: I can double my download speed for an extra $10 a month. Think that would be $10 well spent?

I should add I do not have any gamerfuel rules on because I've never really needed them. I really want to optimize my wireless settings.

I'm on 50Mb down and 2Mb up now for $45 a month. Great deal comming from 10Mb/1Mb for $60.

Review the Stickies for good information on using Gamefuel.

To be honest, sounds like you already have a pretty good setup. If you can play on both 360's at the same time, and don't see much lag unless your on the wireless, your in pretty good shape. The only I would touch is the wireless. Do you have any devices not capable of N? If not, go N only, lock the channel, and use WPA2 AES only. See how that works before you even touch WISH.

Ps3, laptop and phones are all devices not capable of N. It is setup to G only. I've had WISH turned on all along (no rules applied, just auto).

I've read over them several times. I just wasn't sure if I'd see a difference or not.

Just got done chatting with Time Warner, think I might do ahead and double my connection for an extra $10.

What I would do is save the routers configuration to file as it sits now. Then going in and do some gamefuel setup. Save the Configuration again. I use gamefuel here all the time, I played BO last night with with 2 xboxes and 3 people. God I hate that game.  >:(

I also think that if your only using one device online at a time, you probably wont need any traffic management. If your the only one using the Internet and you go from PC to gaming, probably no need for gamefuel. However you can still use it ensure the NAT is open for gaming.

There are usually multiple devices in use at the same time. Usually 2 xbox's and possibly the laptop. So 2 wireless and one wired. I'd like for the wireless xbox to have #1 priority. Maybe I'll give some gamefuel rules a whirl.

Well you can do that too. If you have other devices on line at the same time you are gaming, I would either set the priority lower for xbl or an in a rule for the other devices and put them at like priority 100-200. They can be in the rules as well.

With all that running at once, I am shocked you do not see lag. :o
