DIR-632 Slow Over Wireless Connection
« on: February 24, 2011, 09:12:56 PM »

I could not find a subject for the DLink Dir-632 Wireless N 8 port router.  So I'll post it here, the closet thing to the DIR-632.  I just bought a DLINK DIR-632 on Feb 7, 2011, and I've had it a few weeks now.  When directly hard-wired connected to the router, web browsing is generally fast. But when using wireless G or wireless N, with either WEP or WPA or no wireless security encryption at all, web browsing is slow, sometimes super, super slow!!!

I'm not sure what is going on, but it seems that the DNS lookups may be to blame.  When I switch the wireless connection back to my Linksys WRT54GL router, browsing is fast, SUPER FAST!  It is noticeably much, much slower to surf the web when connected over the wireless connection to the DIR-632 router as compared to the Linksys WRT54GL.  And I get the same slowness whether I connect wirelessly to the DIR-632 without any network security, or with simple WEP, or with WPA enabled. The signal strengths to the DIR-632 router are all excellent in all cases, and the wireless connections always report at least 54 Mbps or better.  So I know it's not the signal strength.  I've even tried setting the DIR-632 to Channel 11, to achieve the highest GHz signal, to rule out any physical issues.

By default, the DIR-632's setting is checkmarked to 'Enable DNS Relay'.  Is this slowness truly due to this being on?

BTW.  I checked to see if the firmware is the latest and greatest, and it is.  Will try speed tests with the 'Enable DNS Relay' turned off, to eliminate the slowness that may be due to the DIR-632's RAM when trying to cache DNS lookup entries.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
