DIR-655 - connect USB external drive
« on: November 14, 2014, 04:41:49 PM »

Following instructions online I tried to connect a WD My Book 1230 to the USB port.
I uploaded the firmware to 1.37NA,  2013/06/06, successfully.
Then installed Shareport Plus Version 4.3.0 R1(SXUPTP Driver: 3.7.2.0)
The device shows available on the SharePort window, but no where through Windows Explorer
Shareport was installed on Windows 8.1 64bit, HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC
What am I missing?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.

Please verify the Model of this router and FW version. There is no v1.37 version available for the DIR-855. v1.37 is for a DIR-655 Rev A however.

  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Whoops!...I have a DIR-655. Sorry for the mistake. :P
Hardware Version: A4
Product Page: DIR-655
Firmware Version : 1.37NA,  2013/06/06
I am in Canada
When I did the firmware upgrade I was wired. Usually wireless.
I can see the drive on Shareport wirelessly
Factory reset was done after the upgrade

if 3TB is too large, is there any Dlink router that would handle it?

Most D-Link routers only handle up to 1Tb and for good reason. The bigger size then 1Tb if fully loaded would take a long time to fully catalog.

I recommend getting a USB to LAN converter adapter and connect this drive to this adapter...

Will this allow me to connect to the drive?
is there anything other than the adapter that is needed?
Any special software or configuration?
Is what I have done so far, correct?

You'll need to check with the adapters Mfr to see what is needed. Or if any SW is included. I presume at most, if the converter adapter is used, it would just be an IP address that you would connect to set up by the adapter. Again, check with the Mfr of the adapter and see. There are a few out there.

The only other thing to check is the formatting on the drive. It should be NTFS.

I would test a smaller USB drive with the router and see it the smaller size works. If it does, then you'll know that the limitation of the router is the drive size.

You could try an older version of Shareport and see if that works...
