DIR-882 SSID With ascii
« on: September 04, 2019, 08:35:41 AM »

I setup a Wi-Fi network with a SSID that has an asci character in it. I’ve hooked up my TV and thermostat, cameras and even my car. I’ve got a new Epson printer that cannot see the network and I can’t access the character on the printers interface. I see that if I disable Smart Connect it shows the SSID I’m using as bad. Any ideas?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What is the ascii character your using?
What happens if you use a plain simple SSID name on the router. Can the printer connect then?

This is one of the new ones where they hide most all of the settings but it has the hardware (A1) and firmware (1.20) right under the D-Link Logo. It says there is no new firmware.

I'm in the US.

I'm using ° in the name and everything else has been ok with it until the Epson XP-7100 printer.

Not sure about changing the name as I'd mess up all the other devices.

I thought it was odd that the Smart Connect was ok with the name but I cant use it if Smart Connect is disabled.

I'm guessing the Guest Zone would not have access to the local LAN? If I wanted to try that.

I was able to open the web page of the printer and it has a Wi-Fi setup page there and while I can enter the SSID with the ASCII character it then simply says the SSID is invalid. :( Lame. I'm sure there are others but it seems lame to block any ASCII with out even trying it when there are routers and many other devices that seem to be fine with it. :(

Can you remove the offending character from the router and see if the printer will connect to the router with out this character?
Sounds like the printer doesn't support that character. Something you'll need to check on with the printers Mfr.

I don’t think EPSON cares or will do anything about it. It’s just too bad that it’s the only device out of many that have this issue. The printer connects just fine to an older router without any ASCII characters in its SSID. I’m sure the only fix is to change the SSID and setup all my Wi-Fi devices again. :( There should be a big warning in the D-Link interface about using extra ASCII symbols in SSIDs.

The warning label should be with the printers Mfr since it's there printer that fails to connect when this special character is in use on wifi routers. This is not a D-Link issue. For better wifi compatibility and less hassle of troubleshooting these kinds of issues, I recommend not using special characters in the SSID or PW. Use more standardized characters and save yourself from issues like this.

Good Luck.

I agree with the recommendation but that warning should be where you set the network name. :P One little sentence on the network name page would save lots of hassle. Happy New year!
