Wireless AC connection drop between DIR-880L and DCS-2136L
« on: March 14, 2015, 03:49:29 PM »

Just bought these wireless AC gadgets few weeks ago for our home office.  Reason for AC connection is its distance apart of installation.  Tried to test it first for few meters away with little obstruction but it always disconnected and most of the times it was not able to connect at all.  Using my AC phone, I also gets disconnection and always switching to N mode.  Sorry if I place my comment here and not on 880L, but I get frustrated for unable to install the camera on a distant location.  For N mode, I didn't get any disconnection at all.  Followed the guidelines in setting up the router and WiFi gadget but didn't have any result at all using AC.  Any ideas?

To follow-up my initial inquiry, is AC supposed to be has stronger signal and wider range/distance compared to wireless N?  My AC gadgets (2136L, pc and phone) always switching to wireless N connection.  Only 1 cordless phone in our home so are there any appliances or gadgets that affects AC's stable connectivity?  Thanks.

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What is the distance between the router and the AC devices?

5Ghz on any mode is susceptible to building materials due to it's high frequency. Line of sight is best for 5Ghz or 1 wooden wall away at about 15-20 feet.

What modes are you using on the 5ghz radio? Try single mode AC, Channel 36, WPA2/AES only and test?

What FW version is loaded on the DCS camera?

See my inline comment below:
>•What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
DIR-880L H/W version is A1

>•Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
DIR-880L was upgraded to 1.02 11/11/2014

>•What region are you located?
Southeast Asia

>What is the distance between the router and the AC devices?
Around 3 meters only

>5Ghz on any mode is susceptible to building materials due to it's high frequency. Line of sight is best for 5Ghz or 1 wooden wall away at about 15-20 feet.
It is less than 15 feet.  1 concrete 5 inch concrete wall parially blocking the camera.

>What modes are you using on the 5ghz radio? Try single mode AC, Channel 36, WPA2/AES only and test?
What mode in 5GHz?  I used both WPA2 AES and TKIP but getting the same result,

>What FW version is loaded on the DCS camera?
DCS-213L v.1.00.13

  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
>FW Update Process

What happens if you set the camera to connect to the 2.4ghz radio on the 880L?

As said in my original posting, I didn't get disconnection nor drop connection at all using WiFi N.  From the said area using WiFI analyzer, it seems AC signal is weaker than N but it has partial line of sight with the router.  I hope that my objective in buying AC gadgets are worth it.  Is AC only effective on signal strength and long distance if it has line of sight only?  Thanks.

1 brick wall separating them with 3m distance. Anyway, thanks for all the advice.
