HDD will not power down (FW 1.08)
« on: February 23, 2010, 09:32:44 AM »

Hej D-Link

After i have upgraded the firmware on my DNS-323 from 1.06 to 1.08 the harddisks never powers down, but runs all the time.
I have tried to remove the LAN cable from the NAS boks - same problem  ???

The hibernation settings are:

HDD Hibernation = Enable

Turn Off Hard Drives = After 5 minutes

Fan Control = Off/Low/High

Do you have an idear what the problem is  ?

Have you tried clearing the settings (factory reset) and/or Changing the fan value from off/high/low to just low or other setting?

Hey   :)

Thanks for a very fast answer   ;D

No i haven't tried to do a "factory reset" - Does that do anything to my Raid setting and/or data ?

No, raid settings and data will be in tact. Only things removed are Users/Groups and other misc. settings like UPNP server/itunes/ftp being turned on.

Do you have BT addon installed? If yes then very likely it's caused by the unexpected activities that addon is doing when it's not being used. Try to stop that addon when you are not using it, that worked for me.

Hey vk

Thanks for your help - your solution on the problem were excatly right    ;)

But, can it be right, that the box is doing this with the BT active - Is it at known problem, that there are being worked on ?

Regards and many thanks   :)

When BT is active, it's constantly accessing the disk, so it can't really be hibernating, right? :)

Hey gunrunnerjohn

In the old firmware version (1.06) , when the box wasn't downloading og seeding any torrent-files, then the harddisks powered down to save energy !!!

I found the BT client to be pretty limited and hard to work with, I uninstalled it anyway. :D

See this thread I started:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=11383.0

The 1.00 BT client has issues that have yet to be commented on by the DLINK engineers on this site.  I found that, with NO torrents (all BT directories empty, nothing started), I had MANY outgoing connections from the DNS to god knows where - this was preventing mine from sleeping.  Disabling the BT addOn closes the connections.  I removed the 1.00 BT and installed the prior one and all is fine again.

I'd like very much for some acknowledgement of this issue from DLINK and to know that its on a to do list.

Hey vk,

How do you stop the BT addon.  I have firmware 1.08 with the original BT client program which came with the box and 1.06  (did not update the bt client).  Although there are settings to disable ftp, upnp, etc, I see no option to "disable" the bt client when I am not using it.  My hardrives are constantly turning on and off despite enabling hibernation, and I would guess it might be the bt client even with no torrents active.

Thx

You can't directly.  I've never had an issue with the original client.
If you truly want to get rid of it, install the addOn 1.00 BT client (it replaces the old client).  Then, uninstall the new 1.00 client.  You will then have no BT client installed.
