DWA-552 driver being blocked as unsigned
« on: August 08, 2012, 09:15:23 PM »

Connection recently stopped working.  Removed all software and reinstalled, first using CD.  Received msg during install: Windows requires a digitally signed driver:  Driver: Atheros Security NDIS 6.0 Filter Driver (jswpslwfx.sys).  Using H/W Ver: A3 and F/ Ver: 1.70   ... Reviewed site and only see a 1.70 version available for download.  Went ahead and downloaded the D-Link site version and reattempted install.  Same error.  How do we get a corrected digitally signed driver?  It appears the one provided is now expired.  I am aware of the feature to disable certificate inspection at startup (f8) but prefer to avoid the work around and security hole.  Any assistance is appreciated.  Thanks.

What version of windows are you using?
Any security programs installed?
What region are you located?
It is ok to disable driver signature before installation. Won't hurt anything.

Checking the driver file, they are signed. I might presume that something on your system is not correctly seeing or preventing the drivers from being properly processed as signed drivers.

What version of windows are you using? Ans: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1
Any security programs installed? Ans: McAfee Firewall 12.0.355, Virus Scan 15.0.302, Security Center 11.0.678
What region are you located?  Ans: USA, Midwest - CT

Statement: It is ok to disable driver signature before installation. Won't hurt anything.
Reply: Ok, I will disable and reinstall again.  Are you thinking its something being trapped only at installation?  I am not sure if a windows security update or McAfee caused it to stop working.  I had been using this for about 3-4 months when it started failing.  The odd thing, I didnt get this pop-up screen that the driver was expired during the original installation.  I'll send another update after installing with disable driver signature.  Im assuming you are saying I can enable it after installation.

Thank you for the fast reply.

X64 or x32 bit?

If it worked at the initial installation and only begun to show signs of something going on in the last 3 or 4 months I would presume it could be Windows or McAfee. I might uninstall McAffee and try installing with a clean boot with driver signature enforcement enabled and see.

x64 bit.

Installed driver using option F8 at startup and selecting disable signature enforcement.  At installation time I received the pop-up window "Program Compatitbility Assistant" - Windows requires a digitally signed driver.  Interesting, after installation the connection does work until reboot of system.  Which at that point its being blocked by what appears to be the OS using the signature enforcement.   I'll reboot again with the signature off and see if it that acts as a work around (aka OS versus McAfee).  brb

It works as long as I disable driver signature verification at startup.  How can I look at this drivers certificate to really verify its valid?  You mention McAfee but not sure I understand as it appear the OS is blocking.

Just checking to see if maybe McAfee is doing something. You said it had been working until you put McAffee on. I would un-install that and the driver then try to reload the driver again with out McAfee installed. If it happens then you'll know its OS related. I would contact DLink support, level 2 if it happens again.

I think I used the Windows Update driver when I was using 552's, never had any issues with it.

Don't remember exactly how long ago it was, but I think it has been at least 1-2 months now.
Only difference is that I have Norton 360... probably being blocked by os then?

Well drivers dont' just suddenly stop working unless they are modified or something on the PC is messing with them. Are these drivers from the CD or from the web site? Web site is always more up to date.

I would contact DLink and ask to see if there are any problems or help.

Ensure all 3rd party security programs are disabled while installing?
What happens if you hit F8 and pre-boot of the PC and select Disable Driver Enforcement option then try to install?

I see the latest drivers are date 2010, possible that any Windows 7 SP updates since then could have caused the drivers to become a problem.
I would contact DLink for additional help on this...
Let us know what they say.
