AVAST reporting DIR-615 is vulnerable???
« on: May 23, 2017, 08:43:31 PM »

Earlier this month after an AVAST scan of my daughter's PC it reported the family DIR-615 router has an issue, and I have been looking for a network guru to interpret what these messages mean and how I can rectify the issue.  I have always used the old adage that if something is not working right, do NOT update the firmware.

Two items are defined as contributing to this issue

and

I looked up these two items but do not have network experience to the level where I can understand the issue let alone know what to do with it.

The wireless router has a login password, the DHCP server has a limited number (I think 25) of IP's alloowed.  There are five in the family and each has multiple hardwired and wireless devices.  The H/W is ver E3, and although it came with F/W ver 5.10 I think it might have been upgraded since then.  I cannot get access to it tonight so will update if that has changed.

What do I need to do differently to configure the DIR-615 to reduce this reported vulnerability?

I also checked f/w updates for my routers this past weekend(different manufacturer). I saw the newer one has the recent security fixes, but the older model does not. It could be the older model isn't affected, but  I highly suspect they simply didn't bother to fix.  (I prefer a light power draw on main router than these newer ones which pull over double the wattage.  I guess I can turn off the wifi to lessen the draw).

I remember another recent dir 615 post that sounded familiar to yours.

Update: I double checked and found updates for those issues for my router dated 4/24. (The day I was looking was returning site issues/errors). I will install this weekend.

Definitely update the router's firmware to the latest version.

If in the US --> http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-615, select revision E from the drop-down and download firmware 5.14B01 (next to security advisement).

Rescan after updating the firmware and let us know if it has resolved this issue.

Which Avast product is reporting the issue?

Let us know if the FW update helps...
The E model is getting a bit old now so what was good back then may not be as good today.  ::)
