DWA-160, Windows 7 64 bit and signed driver enforcement
« on: December 14, 2014, 09:29:11 PM »

Hi all,

I recently bought a DWA-160 and have had issues getting it to work. I installed the drivers that came with the CD. I could only get it to work if I disabled driver signature enforcement upon boot up (F8). I then tried the MediaTek RT2870 drivers. These newer drivers then meant the LED on the adapter was flashing and there were no warning/error symbols in device manager. However, I still have to hit F8 to get Internet access. If I boot up normally it will connect to my home network, but wont be assigned an IP address and has "limited connectivity". The modem I use is the Netgear CG3100D-2. Furthermore, beforehand I was using a Netgear wg111v3 adapter, but uninstalled those drivers before opening the new adapter.

It seems to be something to do with Windows 7 signed driver enforcement, but the MediaTek drivers are WHQL...
Does anyone have any other suggestions for me to try?

I have the revision B2 DWA-160, and am running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit on an i5-3450 with 4GB RAM.

Apologies if I missed any important info, I had a massive post typed up but accidentally closed Chrome, and cannot remember what I wrote!  ???

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Have you uninstalled all the drivers and then reinstalled drivers from D-Links web site? I have had my 160 installed here and there on my Windows 7x64 pc with out issues.

Thanks for you reply FurryNutz.

I live in South Australia, Australia.

Initially I installed the D-Link drivers from the CD. At the same time I purchased a graphics card (R9 270), and found that even those drivers would not install correctly, but this was all due to the dodgy Microsoft update released on 10th of December. Both the AMD and adapter drivers would work when disabling driver signature enforcement, but neither would on a standard boot. After installing the update to fix the botched update, the AMD drivers worked fine and I was hoping that would allow for proper installation of the adapter drivers, but it did not.

After looking online some more I found people referring to the Ralink (now MediaTek) drivers, as these seem to be more reliable. So I uninstalled the D-Link drivers, ran ccleaner to clean the registry, restarted my pc and installed the MediaTek driver and utility. Now, as I said before the adapter is recognised on a normal boot, connects to my home network, but is not assigned an IP address.

To answer your question directly, as I have the revision B hardware, there are no Win7 drivers for it. Do you remember which drivers you installed to get yours working? I had an issue with another piece of hardware recently and the solution was to install the Vista drivers instead of the Win7 drivers, but I dont want to try this as of yet as the drivers dont seem to really be the issue..

The last driver I had been using is dwa160_revB_drivers v2.40 from the USA web site. Not sure if your region has the same version or not...

Hmm I checked the US d-link site and see that it does have drivers for "Win", but doesn't specify which version of Windows; on the au d-link site it has drivers for all versions of Windows up to Windows 7. Maybe I will try the Vista drivers, if they don't work, I'll try the latest drivers on the US d-link site (Driver_REVB2 2.42 Win).

I'll let you know how I go.

I finally had time to look into this again..

I installed the Vista drivers from the AU D-Link site, but the issue still arises; if I boot up and disable driver signature enforcement, all works fine, but if I don't I can connect to my network but have no Internet access (Windows reports "Limited Connectivity").

Out of curiosity, if possible could you check the details of your dwa 160 drivers? ie Device Manager > Right click the dwa 160 hardware > Properties > Driver > Driver Details.

I have 4 associated files:
C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\Dnetr28ux.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\vwifibus.sys
C:\Windows\system32\RaCoInst.dat
C:\Windows\system32\RaCoInstx.dll

The first and last state the provider is Ra Link and Digital Signer is MS Windows Hardware Compatibility, the second one has provider of MS and digital signer of MS windows, whilst the third one all say unknown except the Signer is MS Windows Hardware Compatibility. Could you check to see if yours is the same and if these are the only four driver files?

Also, do you have Rev A?

Ill try install the US drivers for Win7 and also update any motherboard drivers too. If this fails. I'll try on another PC.

Thanks for your help FurryNutz.

First of all, Merry Christmas for 6 days ago and Happy New Year for tonight! (here anyway)

I tried the US drivers - same story; need to do the F8 thing.
Had a look at the mobo drivers, but there aren't any related ones for USB or chipset.

Still will try install it on another 64 bit Win7 PC to see if the issue is isolated with this particular PC.

Have fun travelling!

Works perfectly fine on another PC, using the drivers on the au d-link website. I noticed that on there it has drivers for all versions of Windows except 7 (as I said before), but when downloading those drivers, there is a folder for Win7x86 and x64...so I used those, didnt even bother with the d-link utility and it worked flawlessly!

So its something to do with the other PC...I spoke to my computer enthusiast friend, he suggested to install the latest Intel INF files for the motherboard, which I did but to no avail. At this point I think I may give up, as the PC is actually my girlfriends and her families house PC, and no one cares about having to do the F8 process...

Nonetheless, any other suggestions that are (relatively) simple/quick I will give a go!

Thanks

Ya, maybe something on this one particular PC.

Maybe a clean fresh install of the OS, SP, HW and motherboard drivers, then install the adapter drivers...

In case anyone stumbles upon this thread and is curious of the outcome, I did a fresh install of Windows and the DWA-160 worked perfectly! I just used the drivers that came on the CD and had no issues whatsoever.

The issue may have been due to malicious software on the PC, as a couple of weeks aftermy last post the PC was running sluggishly and IE and Chrome would not work, they would hang and crash etc. when trying to load a webpage and I had issues uninstalling them.

It was just one of those times where putting in the extra effort of reinstalling Windows from the get go would have saved a lot of time!  :'(

Thanks for yor assistance FurryNutz.

Glad you go it figured out.

I recommend using Malware Bytes as a extra tool to help you find bad stuff on PCs.

Enjoy.  ;)
