Title: R15 - Firmware 1.04.04 Hotfix released
Post by: GreenBay42 on January 05, 2022, 03:25:28 PM
Firmware hotfix released for the R15 router. This patch fixed mesh issues and reconnection issues with range extenders. If using with an E15 range extender, update the E15 to 1.04.04 hotfix.

New firmware installed.  This router doesn't seem to like to complete a reboot.  Upgrade finished completely but power light was still orange, had to unplug to get it to come back.

After upgrade and reboots.. the secondary R15 and my updated E15 both connect to mesh but drop often due to showing poor connectivity to the main R15...
Doesn't make sense because truly they are not that far away.
It does appear that I am having less connectivity issues with my devices though..

Sometimes if they are too close, that can be an issue too.

(Updated)

OK, I went from 1.04.01BETA to 1.04.04 on both my extender and main router.

Neither seemed to want to upgrade automatically, they both announced they were running the latest firmware version. Does 1.04.04 identify itself as 1.04.01 somewhere or is it just not available for automatic upgrades yet?

On the R15 being used as an extender, the device didn't show the new version number even after a reboot until the main R15 was also upgraded.

For the main R15 (the router): I'd like to confirm what davevr31 says about the reboot. In my case the main router froze with 3 white lights, unpingable, no Wi-Fi signal, etc. Turning it off and on completed the update.

Anyway it's all working right now.

I'll try some longer term tests over the next week or two and report back. I'm glad to report the DHCP server issue I reported is still fixed.

Is this likely to fix the issue with R15s configured as extenders rebooting unexpectedly occasionally?

BETA/Hotfixes are not on the FOTA (firmware-over-the-air) server so the router will not see it as an automatic upgrade. They usually go through certification/testing before becoming "official". Usually can take weeks to finalize.

I threw this firmware on my unit at home and definitely see better performance than 1.03.04. My wife no longer has connection issues when doing video meetings for work, and very little streaming issues with specific apps (Disney+ and Paramount Plus) on my TVs. I did notice my E15 with older firmware reboot every 10 minutes so I just unplugged it (I don't need it).

I did not experience the reboot issue though. My unit updated the firmware normally and rebooted without issues.

OK, it's been four days. My comments are:

- Generally seeing no changes over the 1.04.01 beta. Wireless strength seems equal and as reliable as it was with 1.04.01. Router features appear to be the same and unchanged. The things I found weren't working properly (weird behavior of some apps on a Chromebook) still don't. But I'm using two R15s, not an R15 and an E15, and I'm guessing it's meant for the latter?
- The "Extender Mesh node reboots a lot" thing seems to be worse. It spontaneously rebooted 3-4 times in the week I was testing it under 1.04.01, whereas it's rebooted itself at least three times in the last four days. It's very annoying, as anything connected to it loses Internet access during this time, sessions time out and disconnect, etc. I did manage to save the log in the main router (can't get the extender's) if it'd help D-Link debug but I can't imagine it's that useful given it's not of the extender itself, which is where the problem is.
- I do think you need to roll this out as an automatic update, either of the 1.04.x images you've released so far is a massive improvement on 1.03 it's not even funny.

Thanks to everyone at D-Link for the updates, you have a great device here and there's not a lot left that needs to be done to make it perfect.

1.04.04 is going through final testing and possible certification but will be "official" soon, and will roll out automatically.

Again thanks for the information. We will continue to report issues and hopefully they will get fixed. The router is now being sold globally so there are a lot of voices :)

That's good to hear. Would logs from the main router during one of the periods where the extender (both R15s) spontaneously rebooted be useful? I'm guessing not, but if it would help please let me know. If I can send it privately I'd prefer that.

hello, I am facing issues with my router D-link R15 which i bought 2 days back
I feel there is issue with the firmware should I upgrade it to the beta 1.04.04 or return the product.
I am currently on 1.03.04
based in India.
suggest any points that I should remember before, while and after upgrading the firmware.

Yes you should upgrade the firmware.

After you have done so (you can do it beforehand if you want too), do a factory reset of the router, and go through the set-up process again as for some reason the process of upgrading from 1.0 to the present version results in a broken configuration. Once upgraded though with the current firmware and a fresh configuration, the R15 is a nice solid router. I hope they get 1.04 version out of beta soon because I'm pretty sure 1.03.x is ruining the reputation of what's actually a nice bit of kit when the kinks are worked out.
