Title: DIR-655 - No wireless connection, but can connect direct
Post by: UnWired1 on December 03, 2010, 12:23:41 PM
Need help here with an issue that neither DLink nor Verizon DSL support has been able to help me with.

I have the DLink DIR-655 router, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  I have been having ongoing problems with my wireless connection, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

According to the Windows Network Diagnostic tests, I have a "bad ethernet cable connect".  However, I can attach that same cable directly to my laptop and connect to the Internet no problem.  I have also tried new Ethernet cables, same result.

I read an article on PCMagazine about boosting the Wireless connection (many forms of interference) - and I loaded inSSIDer 2.0 to see possible wireless conflicts.  Additionally I upgraded the DIR-655 firmware.

However, the problem has only gotten worse.  Now, I cannot obtain a wireless connect at all.  NOTHING.  Yet all the Windows Network Diagnostics shows is a bad Ethernet Cable connection.

As every ethernet cable I've tried works fine when connecting directly into my laptop, I assume the problem must be with the router itself - yet DLink blames Verizon and visa versa.

Any ideas on how to resolve this problem?  Or do I just need a new router?

I had a similar issue where my wireless would lock up but usually not by wired. Mine was locking up every sat morning. I and many friends did all kinds of searching on possible interference Causes.  Cordless phones, microwaves,  anything on a timer.

I never found out a cause but when I updated to firmware  to 1.34na  and made sure my clock was correct  my problem disappeared

Bud,

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately, in my case - the problem only WORSENED after I upgraded the firmware!
Not only can't I connect (wireless) via my laptop - my desktop no longer can connect to the internet!!  Prior to the firmware upgrade, the desktop had no problem.

Only my wife and kids use the desktop, hence my need for the wireless connection.  However, the router has essentially become completely useless since upgrading the firmware.

Called DLink support again today.  They blamed the problem on Verizon.  Just got off the phone a few minutes ago with Verizon - after talking with them for more than an hour.  The problem isn't Verizon, as my modem works fine.  If I plug the laptop or desktop into the modem, I can connect to the internet (no wireless).  However, once I connect through the router - I CANNOT connect to the internet, meaning the problem lies with DLink!

Even tried reseting the router.  Still have the same problem.

Seems like the only remaining option is find the original software and reinstall the original software and forget about the useless firmware upgrade.
