Hello All,

As we use products which are just getting more bad as more and long we use them - sometimes it is good time to review and change overview, sometimes it is good to buy new fresh products, sometimes replace to new what is possible

I use DNS-343 f/w 1.05 (f/w date 05/31/2011) with 3x 1,5TB Seagate ST31500341AS configured in RAID5

This configuration runs everyday for about 2 years 24/7 as a local backup for files

so far there was no problems but as I can check in the Hard Drive Info after email alert
One harddrive have status Abnormal

Raid is still completed but i think that it will not be for long time so i am thinking about some changes

First of all - When i though about what will happen if raid will go off - i felt quite safe after reading some posts refering to the software which can help - anyway

What if i don't want to use special software to recover RAID5 drives?
Is it better to use RAID1? What if the one drive of RAID1 will fail - can i just use the second one to copy data even via ext usb bay - or i will have to use additional software or raid rebuild?

What i am thinking about as the simple solution -

I will buy 2pcs of 2TB drives (eg. ST32000542AS)
I will copy all current RAID5 data to this new drives (it is less than 2TB)
I will degrade RAID5 and make from two good drives 1,5TB RAID1
then i will copy back data to RAID1 array and create second RAID1 array with this two 2TB drives
finally - i will use 1,5TB RAID1 array for daily usage and second 2TB RAID1 array as additional backup based on some ext scripts (zipping specific files etc) -

And... if any drive will fail or even DNS-343 will fail - i will just take working drive and copy data from them then if possible make rebuild or buy new dns-343 and try to use drives/rebuild...

Of course the simplest way is to buy 1pcs of 1,5TB HDD and just replace and rebuild of RAID5... but if one drive have abnormal smart and probably will fail soon... i can expect that second two will fail in short time too

I would appreciate if someone can give me opinion on above

Thanks!

btw: the abnormal smart details from dns-343 web are as below
