Why is a consumer device so complex to setup?

5 hrs so far and very regretting I bough a D-link.

So  -in setup NAS as recording location I enter a valid NAS location and username/password.
\\DGS_SYN1\Public\NON BACKUP FOLDER\dlink
I don't have a workgroup or wins address so leave  blank.
Then hit 'test settings and always get a fail/error.
Why?

I'm having the same problem with an Iomega NAS.
(EDIT) Just got it working using the IP address (\\192.168.1.10\DoorCam)

agree with you DNS343_Singapore, it would be challenging to write a less useful manual.
