DIR-655 Not Getting Network Settings
« on: February 18, 2013, 07:40:10 PM »

I have a DIR-655 that was working for the longest time, then out of the blue it just decided to stop getting a connection to the internet.  I can connect to the router, but for some reason, it will not get any network settings.  When I check the status/device info/WAN section, it just shows:
IP Address :     0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask :     0.0.0.0
Default Gateway :     0.0.0.0
Primary DNS Server :     0.0.0.0
Secondary DNS Server :     0.0.0.0
Advanced DNS :     Enabled

I have tried disabling the Advanced DNS setting, but still no luck with getting network settings.  I've tried messing around with the firewall settings, but no luck with that either.

When I do an ipconfig /all, all of the DHCP Enabled are set to "no".  I have tried a release/renew without any luck.  Running out of ideas here.  Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT:  Should probably mention that I have tried changing the router IP address and updated the firmware to 2.0.7NA

First, if your doing a "Ipconfig" and seeing DHCP set to no, that means locally on your computer. Do you have your computer set to a static IP? If thats on purpose, fine, if not, probably want to turn DHCP back on.

Second, what do you have the router connected to? What do you have the WAN settings set to? Static or DHCP? Other?

The router wont connect to a number of computers, wired or wireless.  None of the computers attached have static IP addresses, WAN or LAN.  All of the network settings should be using DHCP.  I'm guessing it's saying no DHCP because it's not picking up an address.

The router is connected straight from the modem to the WAN port on the router.  From there, one cable is connected to a desktop and trying to connect wireless with a laptop.  Both can connect to the router just fine, just not the internet.

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

What IP address on the router did you change it too? I could be conflicting with your ISP modems IP address by chance.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Hi Furry,

I'm in Ontario, Canada.  I've tried a factory reset on the router, but it was still giving me the same issues as before.

We are currently using Cogeco cable internet.  The modem is an RCA DCM425.  We had this swapped out when the issue first started.  At the time, I tried resetting the modem and the router would gain network settings for a brief moment, then drop them again.  I've tried this recently and cannot obtain any network settings.

I changed the IP address of the router from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.2 just to see if there was any conflicting IP addresses, but it still didn't make a difference.  Should I try a different address such as 192.168.1.1?

I have tried numerous different cables.  If I have the desktop plugged directly into the modem with the same cable, it works fine.

I appreciate the hasty responses :)

I would try try this, download v2.03 FW. Disconnect the WAN port from the ISP Modem. Do a factory reset of the router using the Tools/System page option and using IE only. Do not use Chrome please. After the router resets, send the .bin file for v2.03 using the routers FW upgrade page. Let it send and it should restart automatically. After it restarts, Do one more Factory reset of the router using the Tools/System page option. This time reconnect the WAN port cable to the ISP modem. While you do the factory reset, Power OFF the ISP modem for 30 seconds then power it back ON.

Only couple of things I would do is to take this router to say a friend, family or neighbors place, and see if it works on a different model modem if possible.

Yes, try the 192.168.1.1 as a test.

You've ruled out the cables I think.

I followed the steps you provided and success!  I'm replying to this now while connected to wireless.  I really appreciate your help on this issue.  I will unfortunately be away from this house until the weekend coming up, so I will be sure to follow up then to make sure everything is still working.

As a side note, I'm curious as to what gave away that I was using Chrome.  Or was it just a regular instruction you ask of people?

Awesome. Glad you got it working.

A lot of the worlds population uses chrome so I presume for the most part that most users here that need help use it. Others have experienced while using Chrome and these routers during FW updates have caused problems. Yes it's my general statement to users not to use Chrome while doing FW updates on these routers. It may work well on others however we've seen issues here while using Chrome. So I only recommend IE first then FF as a safe and precautionary use of a browser for these routers.
FW Update Process

I would also ask your ISP if there is a more recent upgrade to your current modem. I think this modem is a few years old on being on the market. Might ask them if you can bring your own modem too.

Keep us posted.

Enjoy.

Back at the house now and it's still up and running.  Thanks again for your help.

I'll definitely look into updating my modem as well to stop any issues that might cause.
