DIR-868L Setup
« on: November 02, 2013, 12:56:05 PM »

I have just purchased a DIR-868L Router but I am dammed if I can get it to work. I have tried everything, factory reset, reinstalled the firmware,Cat6 cables all to no avail. My setup is a DIR-868L,HW Ver A1,FW Ver 1.01. My modem is a DSL-320B,HW Ver D1,FW Ver EU_1.25. My ISP is PPOE and I live in Ireland.Surely the router should detect the settings. I am currently running a DIR-655 and it works perfectly even after disconnection for some time, reconnect and away it goes every time.Any help gratefully received. ??? ??? ??? ???

Link>Welcome!

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Possible that the routers LAN IP address needs to be changed from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254. What is the IP address that the 655 gets from the DSL modem?

Did this router come with v1.01 loaded?

8128 down down,512 up.The modem does not have a built in router. The MTU is 1400. Always on is enabled. The 655 gets Lan 192.168.0.1 and Wan 109.78.4.220.
Best Regards

I would power OFF the ISP modem then back on after 10 seconds then do a factory reset of the 868L with out any other devices connected accept for 1 wired LAN PC.

Does the 655 use DHCP to acquire the connection to the ISP Modem or PPPoE?
If your using PPPoE on the 655, you'll need to set the same user name and pw on the 868L as well.

As best I can figure out, the modem connects to the isp and the 655 connects to the modem as a DHCP client. Tried the reset but no good.

If the modem is not routing it might be in bridge mode, so you have to put your  username and password in the 868L

Sorry about delay but i got so fed up that I forgot about it. I went back to my 655. I eventually contacted D.Link and to be fair to them they went through everything with me,to no avail. They sent me a new 686 which arrived last Friday. I spent Saturday trying to set the thing up,but again no joy. I guess the 686 is not for me. Reconnected my 655 and everything perfect again. ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Did you happen to change the routers IP address from 192.168.0.1 to say 192.168.1.254?

Also try swapping out cables between the ISP modem and router as a test.

Also try setting the WAN port speed to 10 or 100Mb. I don't know the supporting speed on the DSL modem. Just looked and the DSL modem supports 100Mb only so set Wan Port speed to 100Mb.

I wonder if maybe a new DSL modem would be a good thing to try...I think your the only person I've heard of that couldn't get the 868L working.  ???

Ya I would have tried something different. In mean time, maybe you have a friend, neighbor or family that you could test the 868L out at there place?

Keep us posted...

At last some good news. Got a new modem and although its the same model number (DSL320B) its totally different in shape and more importantly, software. Connected it up in bridge mode to the 868, fitted new Cat6stp patch leads and hey presto everything works perfectly, WiFi,Wired, and PowerlineAV. I am so confident of the result that I even converted the 655 to an AP, which works perfectly as well.(I did save the original settings just in case) Many thanks for your help. :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
