827 locking up/force rebooting under heavy bit torrent load
« on: April 14, 2012, 01:17:42 PM »

Hello all, I am experiencing an issue I have so far narrowed down to bit torrent traffic with the 827. After some time downloading a file/files with bitorrent, my router will lock up disallowing all network traffic and becoming unresponsive to router access or ping request. After approximately 2 minutes the router will reboot itself and continue along its merry way. I have QOS enabled, and have not tried disabling it yet. I am hoping this can be fixed without losing QOS as I need it for my voip phone.

I had this issue happen multiple times the first week I owned the device so I exchanged it for a new one. I had the router up and running for 2 days problem free until I tried to download a torrent, then it crashed. The last time the router crashed I also had been downloading a torrent. Both times it happened within 10 minutes of starting to download. After the router reboots itself it seems to hold fine for the session. I am not entirely sure how to replicate this. My connection is 5mbps down and 768kup so I am not exactly taxing a high end home router. Since I have tried two routers I presume it is something that is firmware related.

After a reboot all my logs are gone and a new one is started, so I can not see if the cause was logged. I may have to try setting up a syslog server to catch it. *Edit* I am just ******ed and didnt see the logs have pages opposed to a long log. Still, sifting through my log I am not sure which entry is the culprit :( *edit*

I will leave my settings as is and if it reboots again I will disable QOS and try. The router does feel fairly warm, I may try putting a laptop cooler under it to test again as well.

Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it? I love the router beyond this and hope it can be ironed out into a stable device.

This is a torrent client issue. You need to adjust the torrent client accordingly so it doesnt' crash the router.

I might also try turning off QOS and Traffic Shaping options.
Set NAT to endpoint independent for TCP and UDP if you have this option under Firewall.

Thanks for the prompt response. I am using uTorrent as a client, it is set to 300 max simultaneous connections, the same as I had with my dir-655 without issue. I am poking around now but am not seeing the nat settings within the config pages. I checked under advanced/firewall settings but see no options there. I do have dynamic fragmentation enabled as i only have 768k up and frequently slower then that around 500k.

300 max connections cannot possibly be too many can it?

Try trying OFF Traffic shaping and QoS engine.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

My ISP is a more local company called cable cable (http://www.cablecable.net/wireless.html) I have the ultra solution. When i woke up from work today I tried downloading another file and the router locked again. I have no disabled QOS and am attempting to replicate the problem, or to see if that is the cause. So far so good, even though I would like to have QOS enabled. The internet modem is an RCA DCM425, its a standalone style.

Thanks for the advice, I will try these settings and see how it goes for a few days and report back. If it solves the problem I will try and isolate it further.

Might be that the ISP your using doesn't handle this connections as well. 5Mb down is fairly low for downloading, streaming and gaming, specially with all those connections. Your asking the modem and router to go beyond probably what your ISP can really do. Wireless ISP is ok however not really great for what your asking. I would go with a wired ISP like cable or DSL. This is not a router issue, this is a torrent issue.

I've been using this ISP for 5+ years with little issue other then prime time traffic issues the lat year with Netflix coming to Canada. Im asking no more of my current setup then I was of my dir-655 and i had no issues with reboots on that. The only change I have made is routers. I'm not so quick to blame my ISP when I have had no issues up until the point I bought this dir-827. I still feel its a router issue. I'm sure I could plug my dir-655 back in and max my connection out just fine talking on the phone, Playing a game and downloading.

Also, I live in the country, I have no other choice of ISP. 5mbps is as good as it gets for me unfortunately. I'm at work now. I'll try testing again tomorrow and see of the router locks now that qos is disabled.

If you have the 655, you could test it and see if the problem with Torrents is the same or not. Is QoS enabled on the 655? Again, this is a Torrent issue and could be resolved by adjusting your torrent client to be more accommodating. Good luck.

i truly believe this is a router issue. I disabled UPNP and have been stable for 2 days with torrent use off and on. However, something peculiar of note is that I am getting errors under WAN on the statistics page. I receive approximately 1 error for everything 10000 bits or bytes or whatever transmission data it reads.

I have experienced no issues or lag, and dont know what the errors are, they dont show in the logs. I logged into my broadband modem and it shows 0.00% bit error rate on it and the logs are fine. I have tried a new cable, and that did not help.

I am now trying my dir-655 to see if I still get errors or not. If I dont, ill try the 827 again and reboot the device with default settings. What could these wan errors mean?

I would search the forums for anything "torrent" and see if you can find some information regarding set up. I thought I saw a post somewhere on here that mentioned someone setting up the client to work better with these routers. Errors are probably a condition that the router is running into while trying to handle what your throwing at it. Also maybe that since this product is pretty new, may not be as stable as the 655 which also had issues back in the day and is much better. See if you can find that post about the torrent client configuration, I think I saw it in the 635 board, just not sure.

I've also heard people mention issues with the 827, I don't have specifics but let me ask around and see what I can find.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have QOS enabled again as it makes a large difference in my home when someone is using the majority of the bandwidth and I or someone else wants to browse the web etc. Other then the lock ups torrenting the router has been fantastic. I reset the router 1 day 15 hours ago as I was doing some configuring on a repeater bridge we set up for a lan night and everything ran great with 5 xboxs on the network over 200 feet away from the main router through two bridges.

I will try a torrent again today to see if it locks up again, I am sure it will. A minor inconvenience at this point to turn off QOS when I want to download something.

Interestingly, I just checked the router and under wan there are zero errors and 19 packets dropped. I know whenever I reset the router it shows a few packets dropped, I assume that is when it is initially configuring itself and or testing bandwidth etc. I am not sure as to why I have no errors with almost 2 million bits/bytes/great apes transmitted now. It was incredibly windy here earlier in the week and last week, maybe my antenna was getting blown around to the extremes of my signal. I would think the modem would show errors in transmission if that was the case though, and it was rock solid.

Right now with no restarts of the router since my last posting I have 16 tx packets dropped under wan ( I mis-posted 19 in my previous post). I have 81 TX packets dropped under wireless 2.4, and 313442 tx packets dropped under 5ghz. The only thing that connects to the 5ghz stream is my wifes playbook on occasion, for instance there are far more dropped packets for 5ghz then sent and received combined. I have no issues when connected to 5ghz so I think they are just drops due to inactivity or no response etc. I have no RX drops anywhere, and wired is zeros across the board.

if I restart the router right now, as soon as it comes up I will have anywhere from 10-60 dropped packets under TX under wan, and anywhere in the same range under wireless 2.4 and 5. Im not sure why it only drops packets on reboots, but I do not notice any more drops under the columns as time goes on.
