Author Topic: Why Some wireless will connect but not address given by the DHCP server  (Read 2898 times)

I just bought this router and I'm having a problem with 3 of my wireless devices.  They will connect, but don't receive a IP address from the DHCP server. The funny thing is that if I hook my old wireless router up as a access point and connect to the D-link with a cable, they will receive an IP address from the D-link DHCP server and they work fine.

I have 3 other devices that connect with no problem.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Try Turning off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Thanks for the quick response, I have underlined most of your question.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
The above questions will have to wait until I get home.  I did check the firmware and it said it was up to date.

What region are you located? US
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router? Both

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?DSL
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? Stand alone
What ISP Modem make and model do you have? Speedstream and I will check on model tonight.
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
As of right now, no connection problems with both routers connected.  My old router is only setup to be an access point for the devices that can connect but don't receive an IP address from the new router.  But it does the same thing even if the old router is unplugged.

To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
No bridge

Some things to try:
I will try these when I get home
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. All of my devices are set up to auto obtain

I have tried all the settings and still no IP address

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only. tried both
What security mode are you using? WPA-Personal
Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected? laptops and ipods
Any cordless house phones? yes
Any other WiFi routers in the area? yes Use InSSIDer to find out.
Try Turning off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. I will also try this
