Bought new Dlink DIR-816l AC750 dual band router(hw verion-B1, Fw version:2.00). while configuring i tried to change default router ip address to 192.168.7.x range. but it throws error " the network id of lan-1 is same as lan-2". i could assign 192.168.8.x or 9.x but not 7.x range. My LAN is configured with 192.168.7.x series.

i want to make this router work like a wireless access point and as switch. configured wireless network as needed where all wireless devices get DHCP ip address from one of DHCP server in my LAN. only problem is i couldn't get the router ip address change to 192.168.7.x. wonder this could be issue with Firmware.?

Any help is really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

.7.x is used and a dedicated IP address by the Guest Zone feature on the router and can't be changed.

Please use a different IP address and follow this for using this router in AP mode:
Turning a router into an AP.

Hardware Version: b1
Firmware Version: 2.00

thanks for the link, followed exactly what the link says to make this router as AP. Now it seems its creating new issue. when connected this dlink router to LAN some computers in LAN loose Internet connection randomly but can able to access LAN. FYI,we do have cisco wirless router which is also configured as access point connected to LAN.

our network setup is like this leased line Modem->sonicwall firewall->Layer 2 Dilink switches-> From here it connects to wireless routers, 8port switches and all computers in LAN.

Note: on cisco wireless AP Upnp is enabled, till date we dont have any issue with LAN. wonder enabling Upnp on dlink would not cause any issue. the intention to buy this router is only to extend the range. but this becomes hard nut to understand with lots of restrictions. where i cant configure router ip to .7.x range.

P.S: Its weird, Lately i observed that after Turning this router into an AP, if i connect this router to LAN most of the computers on LAN lost internet connectivity. unable to reach gateway IP , but could access local network. i mean to say computer can able to ping/access any servers on lan, but cannot ping gateway ip and inturn no access to Internet.

i confirmed this by disconnecting dlink router from LAN and all the computer resume internet connectivity.
Could someone here can tel me what's problem with router.

If your looking to extend your current WiFi network, I would recommend getting into a DAP model extender rather using a DIR series router as a AP. There not really intended to be extenders and more designed to be main host routers. I would recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office for inquiries about the DAP model that will best fit your WIFi extended needs.

I have used the DIR series as AP when needed and work well when setup up correct for the wired AP mode. There maybe a configuration issue that is causing issues however.

Well getting DAP is different point, but restricting customers from change the ip address to 192.168.7.x is unacceptable. there is no official document for this. No any other router in market have such hidden restrictions.

I hope if I can able to change the router ip address to 192.168.7.x , i could make this router work on my LAN.

i did had chat with local DLink support guy, initially he said there is no such restriction in changing ip address, but later he retreated himself after he had remote session and configured the router himself, looks like their support team has no clarity on this.

Just because of this router i cant change my while LAN setup, the seller has no intention to buy back the router as this box is tampered and i dont know Dlink will get me replacement. since this is my choice to use in my office network, probably i will end up getting new device on my own money, Totally sucks.

i'm thinking about flashing firmware from dd-wrt.com if available. does anybody as link for this "DIR-816L".

You need to use a DAP model AP as the 816L isnt clearly designed for your needs nor does it support WRT...wht not change your default IP address pool to something else like using default pools ie .0.1 and .1.1?

The DAP model probably support the IP address scheme you need however I would contact D-Link sales to make sure.

In first place why do there is restriction using 192.168.7.x as router ip address, this is unethical.  :-\

our LAN has only one subnet i.e .7.x ip address range, just because of this router i can't change all the firewall rules, NAT policy, access restriction and everything that is based on ip address.

i believe every wireless router on the market works as AP, even this dlink router works too, but only exception is not allowing to change to 7.x ip address.

Thats due to D-Link chose to set the GZ addresses in this range since generally most home users do not use the .7.1 IP address range. You'll need to set a different IP address range on your IP address pool or find a different solution as this is a configuration incompatibility issue here. Suggestions have been made.

Good Luck.

Most routers that support guest zone have 192.168.7.x restricted. Since the router intended for home use, it's unlikely that a consumer will use that particular subnet. Even if that's the case, a typical consumer may have 5-10 mostly dynamic devices (smart TV, ipad, smart phone, laptop etc). If they were to use the default 192.168.0.x subnet, they would just need to reboot all their devices once and voila! online.

Looking at your existing topology and assuming the whole network is 192.168.7.x and you may have printers, NAS's and other stuff all static it will be a pain to change everything to something else.

What you can do is change the LAN IP on your DIR-816L to say 192.168.0.55 (note it down), set all the wireless parameters as desired and then disable DHCP. Then plug the 816L via LAN port 1-4 to the network. The 816L will still act as an AP and function properly. The only downside is if you want to mange it, you will need to set a static on your PC to 192.168.0.xxx to log in. If your network is fairly static, you could in theory leave this operational indefinitely. If you like changing passphrases, channels, admin passwords on a weekly basis, this may be cumbersome and an Access Point would be recommended (DAP-2310).

Hello Doom,

i had tried that, but as soon as i connect the wifi router to the LAN, systems connected to  LAN loose internet connectivity. even dlink support couldn't find what is the cause for this. but as per Dlink support there is no such restriction to assign 7.x series ip address.

its been almost 2 months they logged a ticket for this issue, but no response till date. i have never dealt with such worst support from any other vendor so far. its really pain in ass to own dlink product.

What region are you located?

Is there a case number? Please PM me the case number if available...

I do believe that your using the wrong product for your network application since you have a set IP address net on your system. You need to get into something flexible and get into the right tool to handle the job. Like Dr Doom suggested, a DAP model product will resolve this issue.

we located in India. I have sent PM my case id to you.

i do believe that basically any wifi router is also an AP, we do have other wifi routers from different vendor which is configured as AP and everything works fine except this DLINk router.

where is the document which says you can't use 192.168.7.x series ip on this router ? even the Dlink l2 support guys i spoke to had no idea on this. as per them it should allow to change the ip to whatever the end user needs. then why is not possible in my case.?

it is ridiculous and unethical to have such restrictions without proper documentation. as an end user i must be allowed to change the ip to whatever subnet i need.

Well from looking at the User Manual for this model router, if it was supporting of changing the GZ IP address it would be in the GZ feature section. I presume that since this IP change feature is not listed here that the changing of the GZ IP address is not supported currently for GZ. I have seen this only on a couple of other routers where users can change the IP address of GZ, I can't remember off the top of my head, I think one is the DIR-645 which one user also complained that he was using the same IP address sub net as you and he wanted the 645 to work on it however GZ was already restricted to this IP address.

Theres not much else we can do here for your situation. Given that the information in the User Manual differs from what D-Link support said, I would either call them back and refer them the User Manual and have them tell you where the IP address can be changed on this router. Ask for level 2 or higher support.

Or return this model router and get in to a D-Link DAP model AP which should allow for better IP addressing flexibility. While your on the phone with D-Link support, I would ask them specifically which model DAP would best suited your network needs. They will have this information. Just give them the detail on what your needs are. Again, ask for level 2 or higher support.

We can't do anything else for you here in the forums. This is a compatibility and configuration issue that can't be solved here in the forums. Suggested solutions have been made.

Good Luck.
