Having the router incorporated into the DSL modem gives basic end users the ability to have more than just one PC on the same device. It has a router and DHCP server so that you can have multiple PCs going. However these DSL modems/routers are generic and basic as best. They are good for general internet use. Those of us who game and download alot, like the features of other OEM stand alone routers like the 4500 that have the ability to do different and better things then the standard ISP Modem/Routers. The DSL Modem doesn't do anything accept translate the signal over the phone lines into usable data for the router and PCs to use. The main issue of having theoretical 2 routers on the same network is that the Network Address Translation can not be fully followed seamlessly and they are both trying to address, port forward and connect to ports that the one router cannot connect to since there is another router in the way.

If you have the DSLs log in PPPoE information, username and password, then you should be able bridge the DSL modem somewhere in the DSL modem. Then In put this PPPoE information into the 4500 Basic/Internet/Manual section, select PPPoE, input the user name and password and save it.

Another thing you can try if your DSL modem has it. What ever the IP address is given to the 4500, set that ip up on the DSL modems DMZ. This in effect will bypass any routing processing on the dsl modem and this might allow all traffic to pass thru to the 4500 so that you can use it's features. See if the DSL modem has a DMZ or pass thru function. Let us know.

Don't see PPPoE, I see PPPoA. I don't enter a user name or password, just hook the modem up through the telephone line (same provider as the dsl) and that's it.

PPPoA is the other one. I forgot about that. LOL. Is there a web page for your DSL modem?

May I ask a simplier question here? What was your reason for buying the DGL-4500? Do you do online gaming? Because PPPoA is a entirly different standard then PPPoE. Its Ethernet vs ATM. Its ATT trying to squeeze out internet off their ancient infrastructure. So honestly, if your just looking for a basic router, for getting two computers online, the DGL is not for you. If your looking to do online gaming, I would really suggest seeing what other ISP's are in your area.

I do online gaming. I pretty much tie up the internet when I'm playing if my wife gets on it will give me so much lag (Thought the game fuel thing sounded like it could fix our issues) That way I could still play and my wife could get on the internet.

There are no other options for internet (I've looked) it's the local telephone company and that is it, no major companies have filtered down this far yet closest is like 30 miles away. Our telephone company has a monopoly in this area as well. For instance, I have 3 mbs download and 97 kbs upload (That is about max you can get they go as high as 10mbs but it is extremely over priced for what it is) so I really don't have any other options.

I'm thinking my problems stem from a few things together, the isp service (slow speed), the old router I was using, online servers for the games I play and that this router will not end up solving my issues. I'm going to end up sending it back, but I wanted to explore it first before just giving up on it.

Thanks for the help, I ended up just shipping the router back. The wired connection didn't even seem to speed me up at all, so back to the drawing board.

Thanks again for all the responses to my questions, really appreciate it.

Curious as to how much the 10Mb service costs?

79.95 a month (59.95 if in a 1 year contract, but I believe that is only for the first year of service) and since I have been a customer for over a year even if I upgrade it won't apply to me.

That price is for 10mbps download and 1 mbps upload and that is the fastest you can get period and probably only get that if your a business. I'm not even sure if I can get it here at my house, says it's not available everywhere.

They just don't have very much competetion around here so they really don't have to strive to increase.
I would love for Verizon or Comcast or even ATT to filter down the 25 miles or 30 miles so I could switch service, but the county I live in is small, so it probably won't happen for quite awhile.

Looked at comcast just now and the have

16mbps download and 2 mbps upload for 67.95 month

wow, ya, our 6Mb was $60 however since I've been with them for a while, I've been upgraded with out price hike and they just upgraded me from 6 to 10 last year and reduced the cost by $10 bucks. Very nice. Ya, you really need to get more speed going for gaming, specially when your wife is online too while your gaming.

yeah they upgraded us twice now with no price hike, Everytime they increase the max speed they offer we normally move up.

Friends of mine work at the telephone company and one said they are trying to up there max speed to 50mbps or even 100 mbps so hopefully that would increase up to 6 or 10 for free with no price hike (hopefully anyways)

I'm wondering if it's a modern warfare 2 server thing and not an internet problem.  I don't recall ever having problems with any other games i've played online, like: Badfield Bad Company 2 or WoW or anything like that, so maybe it's just MW2 or atleast that's what i'm thinking atleast. Weird thing is I plug up my old router and switched the wireless to g only and i was noticing my connection was going from light green (3/4 bars) to Dark Green (4/4 bars) for the entire match. Don't know why, but I seem to be getting faster connection with the old cheap router, then the dlink one. Might have just been that I did not have it fully customized or something like that.

Yeah faster internet would be nice, atleast I could play and my wife be on online at the same time.

Yea, Fast internet does not always equal good gaming, its alot more complicated then that. But your right about it being a mixture of difference things.

As for your issue, you don't want it working as just a bridge, since the modem uses PPPoA and the router can only do PPPoA. So it needs to do the authentication, but just have the DHCP server turned off. Also, the DHCP range of the Dlink needs to be above the IP address the modem is giving the router. But if you already brought the router back, then I won't go into it further. Gaming and networking over DSL is not for the faint of heart, since its alot more complicated. Plus even though there is less overhead with ATM, the process inherent in the standard tends to create a lag spike between your ISP and the ISP or ISP's of the people your gaming with. In short, you end up being "that guy" that lags the entire match. This isn't always true but...yea..ouch. Where do you live? I can ask around, I know a couple friends that work at different ISP's, I can see if anyone is moving to your area. If your more comfortable, you can PM me. Don't put anything more then the general town or county your from though.

I don't have to bad of lag issues, but I notice it enough to know something is up sometimes.

Example, I can shoot someone that is pretty close with a weapon that is suppose to kill in lets say 2 shots and it is taking more then that to kill them (seems like the hits are not registering) I still do really well when I play Modern Warfare 2, but I feel as if I get screwed a good bit from stuff like that. (I can shoot someone twice with a shotgun occasionally and not kill them from 2 feet away)

I don't really notice that i'm lagging though, it's more or less, that I notice that I should have killed that guy way faster then that or how did that guy not die after 2 shots from a shotgun from 1 foot away. Stuff like that is what happens and the only thing I can think of is lag. It's not jumping around or glitchy though like traditional lag.

I don't mind dieing or losing in games, but it gets annoying when you shoot someone 10 times and not have them go down
