Certain Websites Slow on Wireless
« on: June 23, 2011, 09:34:36 PM »

I got a new DIR-655 RevB today, and set it all up.  It works fine right now in terms of speed, but certain websites (specifically, facebook.com) load very slowly on wireless.  I've tried on two computers with different browsers / operating systems and it still loads slow.  I also have comcast which I use a linksys router with, and it loads instantly.  Connecting through wired works.  Also, I get no slow down when connecting wirelessly if I use a VPN.  When I do a speed test, I get my full speed, so that's not a problem.

A few things I have tried:
-Changing the wireless channel
-Disabling QoS
-Disabling traffic shaping
-Changing DNS servers
-Transmit only N/G
-Reducing MTU size
-Disable Dynamic DNS
-Disable advanced DNS service
-Connect to facebook through SSL and not
-Turning router off and on again

Also as a side, unrelated problem, whenever I enable a few ports to be forwarded, I can't connect to the internet when either wired or wireless; its not as big a deal but if you happen to know how to fix it please tell.

What wireless mode mode are you using?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N if you use devices that support N.

Just understand that Wifi speeds will no be the same as wired however web pages should still load fairly fast if your ISP speeds are good.

Still a little confused on the issue. Let me state as I understand it, and correct the missing pieces. You have Comcast where you are, and have two routers, Linksys and Dlink. Its fast wired and wireless, all PC's, all sites on linksys. On dlink, its fast on all sites on wired, but on wireless, only facebook.com is slow? If this is wrong, please correct.

If this is right, then I am not sure what to think. A RF issue with wireless wouldn't just cause one site to be a problem. Maybe Facebook is the only heavy site you go to? Have you tried like myspace, or youtube, or some other site that has alot of flash and javascript? Also, what is your general throughput on wireless? Have you tried tests like speedtest.net or visualware? And do you have more then 1 wireless devices? The fact that it's fast on VPN makes me think its a DNS or some AV issue, since the VPN would tunnel through all that and use your buisness's DNS. Maybe it has some item build on your wireless IPstack and not your wired? This is a good one. :-)

Ah I forgot to make it clear about the routers.  I actually have 2 ISPs coming into the house.  On comcast I have a linksys router, and I also have verizon fios with which I am using the D'link router.  (I used to have an actiontech which came with it.)

Interesting enough, I was talking with my mom recently and she happened to mention that facebook has always been slow on wireless with verizon, even with the old actiontech router.  However with comcast there was never a problem even on wireless.  To me, this suggests that the D'link router is only part of the problem, and fios itself is also part of the issue.  But I still don't understand why, if its a problem with verizon, it would only affect wireless connections.

Also, I tried switching to only wireless N mode, to no avail.
