DIR-655 working with DI-624
« on: July 30, 2007, 05:45:38 PM »

I have a DIR-655 with Firmware 1.04 and it's working great.  I am trying to get a DI-624 with firmware 2.76 to act as a wireless access point (I currently have a cable running from a LAN port on the DIR-655 plugged into a LAN port on the DI-624 (not the WAN port), I have DHCP disabled on the DI-624, if I plug other computers into the LAN ports on the DI-624 they get assigned an IP address from the DIR-655 no problem, it's only the wireless clients that are having issues.  I can get it to work but only sporadically (usually if I manually provide an IP address).  Most of the time, the wireless client will not get an IP address assigned to it by the DIR-655.  I'm sure my problem is a configuration error, but it might be an issue with the DIR-655, so I thought I'd post it here.

Connecting wirelessly directly to the DIR-655 works without any issues.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Use Static DHCP Reservation for your Wifi Clients

My DI524 is working just fine as an Access Point.  I think I found a D-Link specific guide on setting up a router as an Access Point in one of the router manuals they post (DIR-635 maybe), but I can't find it again.  Here is a great generic guide:

http://forum.portforward.com/YaBB.cgi?board=Knowledge;action=display;num =1133918703

(hope links to other forums are permissable here, I'm a newbie on this site, but I've been using DLink gear for years IF the link gets zapped, Google 'convert router to access point' and look for it there).

In short you have to connect the DI-624 by wire to your DIR-655.  You disable the DHCP of the 624, give the 624 a static IP address.  I put my 524 on a different channel, gave it a different SSID, and it runs great as a 'second network' on air that immediately kicks everything to the DIR-655.  Now I connect  N stuff to my N-net where it runs at 300, and my G stuff to my G-Net where runs at 54.

Now if someone could figure out how to convert a router into a Bridge (aka wireless client) we'd be smokin'

The DAP-1555 has not been released yet, sales just likes to get a head start apparently.

Let me second that!
After much googling and reading I have yet to find an N client/bridge. Buffalo's top of the line may have a bridge mode, but I couldn't confirm it.  I also gave up researching the rumor that there might be a DD-WRT (or something like that) firmware upgrade for one of the Linksys N routers that would give it a client/bridge mode the way they have open source firmware that expands their G routers.  All too techie for me anyway.

Somebody at D-Link ought to really get moving on this!  Wonder whether they could include a client/bridge mode in a firmware update for one of the older N routers(615? 625? 635?). The linksys example suggests the hardware may not be the limiting factor. There certainly seems to be a market, and not just among gamersl.
