DNS ShareCenter - Migrating to a Larger RAID-1 Array
« on: December 18, 2012, 01:22:48 PM »

This procedure is designed for 2-bay ShareCenter owners seeking to increase the HDD size in a RAID-1 array.

Procedure

  • Make a full backup of the ShareCenter data on the RAID-1 array
  • Power down the ShareCenter
  • Remove the existing HDDs and label their original location with a marker (e.g. "left" and "right")
  • Insert two larger capacity HDDs in the ShareCenter
  • Power-up the ShareCenter and format the newly installed HDDs as a RAID-1 array using the Web UI
  • Copy the data from the backup to the new RAID-1 array.

Notes:

  • RAID-1 provides redundancy, but is not a backup. You should always maintain a current backup of all critical data on a separate physical device: DNS ShareCenter - Data Backup vs. Redundancy
  • The ShareCenter series does not support RAID resizing (i.e. migrating an existing RAID-1 array to a larger HDD capacity without a full reformat
