Title: Help upgrading firmware from 2.00 to 2.05
Post by: irha on August 20, 2017, 01:11:51 AM
I took out my DNS-320 (H/W A1) after several years and trying to revive it. It is running firmware version 2.00 (Firmware Date 12/17/2010) and I had fun_plug installed. I noticed that the latest version of the firmware listed on the download site is 2.05b08 and there is also a b10 security patch here:

http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DNS-320 (http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DNS-320)

When I downloaded the 2.05b08 firmware, the name of the file was "DNS-320_A2_FIRMWARE_2.05B08.ZIP" which implies that it is meant for H/W revision A2, but there is no separate download for H/W revision A1 so I am wondering if this would be the right firmware or there is a different one I am missing. The download site seem to indicate that the firmware is common for all revisions, but I want to be sure before proceeding.

Also, since I had fun_plug installed, I googled to see if I should do anything special as part of the upgrade, and I found this post:

https://nas-tweaks.net/109/firmwareupgrade-procedure-for-nas-devices-with-fun_plug/ (https://nas-tweaks.net/109/firmwareupgrade-procedure-for-nas-devices-with-fun_plug/)

It is advising to disable fun_plug first and re-enable telnet before proceeding with the upgrade. Though the advise is for a different firmware, I am wondering if I should follow it here as well. Will having fun_plug enabled during the upgrade cause any problems?

I found this thread about firmware update, but it doesn't talk about the hardware revisions or fun_plug:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41866.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41866.0)

I did find the tip about backing up firmware settings useful. I also noticed that the ZIP file needs to be uncompressed and found the release notes that mentioned both A1/A2, so I am assuming that I can ignore the filename being specific to A2, but would like to be safe than sorry by checking here first. Also fun_plug is another thing that I am not sure how to handle during the upgrade.

Yes, the version of FW is for ALL REV A versions of the 320.

Yes, disable any add-ons before updating FW.

Yes it's recommended to back up the DNS configuration before applying FW updates. This a back up of how the DNS is configured only. Doesn't back up any data on the drives. Data on the drives will not be touched.

Thank you! I managed to update with 2.05b8 firmware and re-enable fun_plug. I then tried to upgrade to 2.05b10 (security patch) but it didn't seem to proceed. I kept getting a message to wait for the upgrade and reboot to finish, but it never even rebooted. After waiting for several hours, I ended up rebooting it manually and luckily nothing seems to be broken. The system information only shows 2.05 as the version with no patch level so I am not sure what came out of the attempt.

What Browser are you using to update the FW?

Using Firefox. Do you think I should try again with Chrome? Is there anyway to check what exact version I currently have? Can we just mount md0 and look for some file?

Might try IE11.

Don't use Chrome.

Is there a date listed next to the FW version in the UI?

I don't have a windows computer so can't try IE11. The version listed in the UI just says 2.05.

Both 2.05 and 2.05B10 (security patch) are for both A1 and A2 devices.

Since Fun_plug is 3rd party and the firmware is not installing using, I would disable it, reboot the NAS, log in to the NAS UI and update the firmware. If it still fails or continues to hang, you may want to contact support.
