Title: Wishlist for Ver. 1.08!..... here we go again....
Post by: slyder on April 17, 2009, 11:58:08 AM
Bug fixes identified in previous wish list.
Enhancements identified in previous wish list..

My personal SINGLE ONLY REQUESTMKV Video serving capability preferably simply made available with or without a transcoding option...

Personally, I have no other complaints about this unit and is the only improvement I need from it!.

Thanks.

In addition to all the great ideas people have suggested, MOST IMPORTANTLY.... that we not have to reformat our drives for the upgrade. All the improvements in the world don't add up if I have to figure out how to back up my 2TB worth of backups just to improve my firmware. Kinda defeats the point.

I don't want to have to buy more drive space just to back up my backups.

Bittorent Bugfix!

Multiple users report that after installing firmware 1.06, if you leave a web browser (or firefox at least) open on the bit torrent monitoring page for more than a couple of minutes, the web interface for the dns323 crashes; you can no longer log into the box without physically shutting it down and restarting it.

The NAS itself continues to function just fine (as a mapped network drive, for example), but the web interface is dead until a restart.

Apologies for double posting this bug, but I reported it to tech support but never got a human reply...

not sure if all of these have been asked before, but since this seems to be the new list and i'm a n00b here are a few more.

https management option (including http redirect)
SMART hooks built into kernel for compatible HDD's
iSCSI support
ext3 support
fsck option
more information on status page, maybe something along the lines of
 - last error
 - hdd's in hibernation mode
 - etc

+1 for ssh access

reliable ntp service from d-link or a 3rd party if the problem is with the d-link servers (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5224.msg30509#msg30509). if the problem is with the kernel as suggested in the subpost on the above string, then add the fix to the kernel patch in 1.08.

+1 for no potential data wiping when added 2nd disk (although i'm running mine in a RAID1 and always will so I'm not sure if this could happen to me)

iSCSI in a SOHO NAS?  Unless D-Link plans on trailblazing the entire industry....

The are many reasons why you're never going to see that on this model:

1) The way this particular linux OS handles disk partitioning is too SIMPLE (intentionally!)
2) They'd have to make some serious changes to the OS to handle the commands & I/O.
3) The NIC on the 323 doesn't have a ToE; performance would be abysmal
4) The CPU is not fast enough
5) There is no onboard battery backup so there goes write-back caching
6) More RAM would be required for sustainable/reliable performance

It's a bleak outlook.  Now, for a few grand.....

+1 for USB drive support

maybe it would be possible for the an app to allow the DNS automaticly download RSS feeds and put them in my shared media folder so I don't have to physically do it myself or even have my computer on to do so? Pretty please.... ;D

•UPnP AV:
- MKV, ISO support

i think this is a must as soon as posible.
because....

i just bought a 500$ multimedia center device that has streaming capabilities via network
so i can stream MKV and ISO movies from my 323.

i was shocked when i read that it does not stream these files types :(

now i`m sorry i have bought the 500$ device, and i`m waiting for the firmware that fixes that

sad days for me :(

+1 AFP/Avahi/Bonjour (and timemachine)

avahi can already be installed through optware, but it would be a lot easier if it were supported by the firmware

some features need a very long time to "create"

but features like: upnp AV streaming ISO or MKV files, or usb port as a extension slot to a usb hard-drive for backup, or fan fix, to stop the fan only if it`s below 25 degrees (celsius)

can be integrated much easier..

This should be trivial, as .TS is already supported.

I'd really like to see a newer version of Samba used  (minimum 3.2.x) and change to security=USER (as opposed to security=share).

Hi,

I'm not sure, if my input may be considered as bug-fix rather than a new feature.
To my mind the user and group management of the DNS-323 is... let's say suboptimal. It's impossible at the moment to add a user to more than one group (even though it should be possible from a technical point of view). Additionally you cannot add several groups to one share without having the directory shared under different names (same problem with users - using groups would be a workaround, if it worked...).

What definitely seems to be a bug:
The DNS-323 does support UPnP-AV - but doesn't seem to support the full standard (it doesn't seem to be DNLA compliant). Only a few UPnP software clients can access shared media. However, UPnP-AV works well with 3rd party servers (e.g. Mediatomb).

So here's my wishlist:

Cheers,
Mat

If one of you own a Buffalo NAS... there is a usefull function : Synch one nas with the other.

If one of you're friends have a NAS, you and you're friends can share a location on the NAS, and configure a synch between the NAS. Only the modiffy/new data will be download or upload.

The good thing with this feature : you're house burn ! ... (or the house of you're friends) .. the data are store somewhere else....    all you're picture, mp3, DOC, XLS,...

The DOWNLOAD manager can probably do it... but it have lot of bug when handle hudge folder structure, or to many files.

Not sure if this was mentioned before but fix up the FTP Access List

Simple setup: folder B is in Folder A

Under the network access tab, I am able to Give User_A Read/Write access to Folder A and only Read access to folder B.

In the FTP Server tab, I am not able to achieve this. You can only have 1 ftp access list for User_A. the only way to achieve this (the read/write access portion of this) is to have 2 separate user accounts and give both of them the appropriate access for either Folder A or Folder B. Or give User_A Read/Write Access to Folder A and give anonymous access Read Access.

Both of the options don’t cut it. Allow us to create nice and how ever complicated access lists we want.  For instance, in my setup, I don’t want to give anonymous access, I only want ftp access via 1 simple login user name and define the appropriate access to each and every folder.

Also, another very useful addition which would compliment this very nicely would be a third option from the 2 (Read and Read/Write access), give a third option for Delete Access.

Just because I give a user read/write access, doesn’t mean I also want them to be able to delete the files/folders.

Essentially, allow complex user access, like you can define in either Windows and/or Linux.

MKV Support is essential in the next firmware build, HD 720p and 1080p video is all mkv, converting looses quality and wastes so much time... please hear our voices dlink.

Otherwise keep up the good work guys. Looking forward to next FW build.

I dream of that ^^, a specific page for the FTP server, where we can select severals folder for the same user with different access !

Really really looking for auto power on after power loss. Out in the sticks we have frequent power blips and it's a huge pain to continually run into the basement utility/server room to simply push a button.  :-\
