Title: Wireless Access Point
Post by: PaulPapoutsis on March 28, 2017, 07:17:12 AM
Hey all,

Ok, don't flame the new guy!

I'd like to purchase the 895L.  Need to confirm a specific function.
Does this router allow for it to be configured as a wireless access point?

My setup:
Cable modem in the basement connecting to a wired router.
That router feeds my computer in the basement and xbox. All wired connections.
From that router, I have a network cable going upstairs.  This is where i would like to install the 895L, wired from the basement router, with all of its router functions disabled and only have it operate as a wireless access point.

Can the 895L do that?  Newb question I am sure for most of you - thanks for your help and patience!

Paul

You can certainly do this:
Turning a router into an AP. (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40856.0)

I use this method a lot.  Works well.

Just curious why you don't just get a cheaper wireless AP. Your buying a bunch of hardware that you won't be using.

Thanks guys!  Furry, that was what I was looking for!  Great help!! appreciate it.
Harry, that's a good and valid question for sure.  Its shiny and red, lol.  Forgive my newbness!  Its expensive and I may not use all the features today, but dang its neat and can do a lot, and perhaps it future proofs me and gives options should my setup change down the road.... ?  I'll give this more thought though.

Thank you again fellas
Paul

Ya you can definitely future proof with this router and if you don't need all of the wifi, you can disable some that your not going to be using and turn it on later.

My 890L works great as an AP connected to my main host router.  ;)

Nothing wrong with buying more then you need, as long as you know you're doing it. Heck, I would buy it if I had the cash, and I don't even need a router.  ;D Or you could be like Furry and try to collect them all. If you do, Dlink sends you their gym badge. hehe

Ya I was looking at this one too. The 890L is enough.  ::)
There's a dysfunctional one on ebay but the prices is way to high. I think I could recover it but seller is not responding to offers or emails. No antennas. Orange LED only. I think if one did the recovery, could bring it back to life but not at that price and risk.  ::)
