I just got new internet service with Century link and they installed it via fibre to a modem model C1100Z. I can go on line by directly connecting a cable to the modem via one of the ethernet ports or i can do so wirelessly. However I wanted to continue to use my dir 655 wireless router. My dir655 was set to do dhcp and was working fine. I tried hooking up the router to the modem via one of the ethernet ports and could not get internet. I determined that the modem was set to provide the dhcp, so I figured it necessary to turn off the dhcp setting on the router. It still does not work.
I then read a post on here about using the modem in bridge mode with the dhcp turned off of course, but this is not allowed now unless I am a business account. Not sure why, but it is not going to change anything for me.
Can I go into the modem and turn off the dhcp and get this to work or is this a bad idea which would cause a lot of issues for me? I cannot figure out a way to use the dlink dir655 with the modem doing the dhcp.
Someone with a lot more knowledge than me could perhaps figure this out. I am leaning toward having to get what they call an AP to do this. I would prefer to keep the dir655 for the wireless, but this is tending to seem to me as a non-option.
I have seen someone post about making the 655 do something like bridge mode but it is not clear if I could retain the wireless functions. I have gigabyte lan but my wireless is not all that fast in some cases so i am normally using cat5 cables to the router and some switches.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I have a second question I forgot to ask. I you agree it is not going to be possible to set the dir655 to bridge, then what is best AP to use in place of that router which can also give me wireless?

I'd poke around in there and find where to disable its radio/wifi. My friend has one of these and I had to go into it and enable wifi for her so I'm sure it can be done. After that I'd scrap any settings for dhcp reservations so it will assign an IP to whatever device connects to its ethernet port.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. Call the ISP and ask to see if the ISP modem can be bridged. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
