New owner of DIR-628 with issues
« on: April 12, 2011, 06:50:39 PM »

I just got a DIR-628 to replace my DIR-625 that was taking a crap.  Now I have a DIR-628 that isn't working right either.
I connected 1 computer via LAN without anything else connected to get everything set up.  Everything was working fine until I connected my LAN devices and Cable modem.  The router works great for about 1 minute at a time and then everything reboots.
The router came with the latest firmware installed.  Are there any known issues that might be causing this?  What information can i give to help diagnose this problem?  Thanks.

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand alone or built in router?
What wireless modes are you using? Mixed A thru N? Try single mode G to test.
What devices are you connecting to the 628?

Try swapping out cables running from the ISP Modem to the router? Swap cables from router to devices?

Hmm makes me wonder if there is something else going on here and your old 625 router maybe still good. Was the 625 doing the same thing?

Stand alone RCA modem thorugh Charter Cable.
I have always been using G only mode on wireless with Auto WPA or WPA2 encryption
Devices connected directly to the Router include...
1 Desktop
1 LAN printer
1 wireless bridge beaming signal 1/2 mile to another building with a switch and 2 more Desktop PC's plus a vonage phone adapter and security DVR system.

I will do some more testing on it tonight when the computers are not in use. Maybe plugging in 1 device at a time will help me pinpoint the problem.

The 625 was not rebooting.  The wireless would just stop working occasionally.  Computers would be connected to the wireless network but unable to reach internet or even the router config page while wired computers were fine.  I turned down the signal power on the 625 and that seems like it stopped the problem for now.

Possible that other WiFi and devices in the area could be an issue. Yes, Turn everything OFF. Start with one or minimal devices. I would test with Single mode G with out any security to test. Graduate devices and then turn on security.

These units should work well at G mode at least. Possible that you might need to turn down the routers WiFi if your relaying it with another unit. Since the 628 doesn't need to go that far and the relay unit is doing more of the transmission. Might help.

It has also been posted, elsewhere of these forums, that the WAN port may need set to a port speed of either 10 or 100 and not leave it as AUTO.

Okay, I can for sure say that it is the WAN port causing the trouble.  It only resets with the modem plugged in.
I have not tried setting the wan port to a manual speed instead of auto.  Is there any disadvantage of setting it to 100 over 10? I think my internet is 20 Mbps.

You need to find out what the connector speed is of the ISP modem. Some are 10, some are 100 and some are Gb speeds. That will let you know what to set for the WAN Port speed.

well that was weird.  I set it to 100Mbps and still had the issue.  Then I tried 10Mbps and it worked good but my 20Mbps internet was being choked down to 10Mbps.  Then I tried going back to 100 and it has been working without a problem for 12 hours now.
Anyone have a clue why it was still acting up the first time I set it to 100?

Ya thats crazy...didn't work at 100, works at 10 but slows speeds down to 10 then back to 100 works. Odd. You might investigate getting your own modem. I recommend the Motorola SB6120 if Charter supports it. Has Gb connection speeds and is the best modems I've owned.

I do have my own modem.  I guess the way I worded that was confusing.
Anyways, I just went into the router config to setup my Dynamic DNS and It started rebooting again.  Now I am staying out of the router config and it is doing fine.  Interesting.

It's possible the way your entering or configuring the DNS could be doing something wrong. Its preferred to use ISP DNS addresses in most cases.
