Title: Port forwarding stopped working when I switched to PPPoE
Post by: square_eyes on June 16, 2015, 02:05:31 PM
I had port forwarding working with my old modem. That modem didn't have a modem only mode so I forwarded all inbound traffic to the 880L via DMZ. Then happily forwarded those ports to my static IP machine that I wanted to listen to (MySQL and a couple of other things).

Now I moved from ADSL to VDSL I have a new ISP and modem. This modem, has a bridge mode and when it's set up I enter PPPoE ISP details on the 880L. Internet works fine. Yet, even though I haven't changed the firewall settings on the static IP machine the port forwarding isn't working.

My modem is a Vigor 2750 this is the VDSL only settings I used (http://www.snappernet.co.nz/assets/draytek/DV2750-Bridge-Mode-configuration-for-simple-internal-PPPoE-client.pdf).

I tried factory resetting the 880L too.

Can you post a capture if what your using on the 880L now for Port Forwarding rules?
If your PFg, is uPnP enabled? Disable if it's enabled while using PF rules.

Tried disabling UPNP, didn't work. Here's my settings...

Did you reboot the modem and router after making the change to disable uPnP?

Disable the PF rules and set up these rules in Virtual Sever and see if that works...

Also and to verify, are you getting a public or private IP address on the router since you changed modes? Private is a 192.168.something and public is ##.##.###.###

I did a reboot, and setting up the ports in the virtual server (and deleting the PF ones) did nothing.

I'm going to double check my firewall to rule that out.

I'm getting an IP address from the ISP, yes. And the router is setting itself as 192.168.0.1.

Ok, may need to set up some Firewall rules. Just checking to make sure your getting a public IP address on the router, which is preferred.  ;) To check port status, you need to be actively using the ports before scanning port status.

Well I do get an IP... when I look it up it belongs to my ISP. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by the rest. Yes I'm actively trying to connect back to that machine over the ports during testing.

Additionally, I contacted the VDSL modem manufacturer as I thought maybe their modem only instructions might have omitted inbound. But they tell me that it's all over to the 880L after I have done the linked config.

I'm using Comodo as the firewall on the fixed IP machine. But even when I disable the firewall nothing seems to get through.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Looks like there is no need. My new ISP flip.co.nz got back to me

Due to the world wide exhaustion of IPv4 addresses Flip has implemented a technology called “Carrier Grade Network Address Translation” (CGNAT).

While this technology is totally transparent to 99% of people, it does mean if you want to run a server at home and use a technique known as “Port Forwarding” or “Pin-holing” these services will not work. Most traditional reasons to use port forwarding (like accessing your files remotely) can actually be achieved in a more secure and robust fashion through the use of cloud services such as “Dropbox”.

CGNAT does have some cost and security advantages for end user however as it reduces unwanted traffic (and the associated data use) reaching your modem.

Cheers

Ah ha...was wondering about your ISP. Sorry about that.
Thanks for sharing this information. Hope the router continues to work well for you otherwise.

Good Luck on your endeavors.  ;)

Frustrating response from them. Telling me about how nobody else cares about a feature I have indicated I specifically require. As if that's supposed to make me feel better about pointlessly troubleshooting for two days, and signing up to a service that is wholly useless to me now. ;D

Any chance of using a different ISP service that allows features that you need?  ???

I'm looking now. But it will be more waiting and more install costs. Lucky I'm not on a contract with my current fizzer :)

Hi,

if your ISP has to use a CGN due to lack of global IPv4 addresses (as a result of IPv4 address exhaustion) he usually deploys addresses from within the so called  "Shared Address Space" to the WAN interfaces of his customers' CPEs (your DIR router). This is the address space 100.64.0.0/10 which is the short form for the range 100.64.0.0 - 100.127.255.255. Any ISP who is forced to use a CGN can use this address space, hence it isn't unique and cannot be routed within the Internet, similar to private addresses like 192.168.0.0/16 or 10.0.0.0/8. For details see RFC6424 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6264), RFC6269 (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6269) and RFC6598 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6598).

ISPs who use CGN for IPv4 Internet access usually also provide IPv6 Internet access (e.g. DS-Lite), hence you could reach desired ports on your "static IP machine" via IPv6 from the Internet, given your DIR device also supports IPv6 and you get a fixed IPv6 address range for use inside your LAN (otherwise you would have to use some DynDNS solution).

Of course IPv6 is not yet widespread and commonly used by Internet users, hence nowadays reachability via IPv6 is of limited use only.

If you want your 'static IP machine' to be reached via IPv4 from the Internet, you would have to use some VPN service provider. You would install a VPN client software (e.g. OpenVPN) on your static IP machine and connect to the VPN ISP. He would use a public IP address either for provision to your site's internal tunnel endpoint or for use at his site to NAT and forward traffic through the tunnel to a private IPv4 address assigned to your site's internal tunnel endpoint. Of course this service is probably not for free, hence it could be more advantageous to change to an ISP who offers a real public IPv4 address to your router.

Yes thanks both. Very helpful. A quick question... if I manage IPV6, what do you think the limitations of connecting will be? Will my web host be able to reach my MySQL database (currently using a PHP MySQL connect function). And will client users be able to connect to my Icecast server? Do they have to have IPV6 OS, modem/router, ISP and finally Icecast protocol all supporting IPV6 at once?

The most limiting factor is the limited number of Internet users using IPv6. If you can provide a service to the Internet via IPv6 only, only few people will be able to use it.

Yes, if PHP and the PHP database driver for MySQL both support IPv6. But I don't know if they do.

Yes, if Icecast supports IPv6. But I don't know if it does. According to this presentation (http://www.6init.org/public/ibc_mm03.pdf) (slide 9/36) it should.

Well, it took a couple of weeks of pain but I got connected with a new ISP and have a static IP. It costs a little more, but I immediately noticed an improvement in my connection, which was previously dropping out a lot.

Sounds like this was an ex-ISP issue and the new ISP working how. Enjoy.  ;)
