Furry's DIR-868L Review
« on: May 09, 2013, 09:24:34 AM »

Received a new DIR-868L yesterday.  :o
Rev A1 v1.00 loaded.

Initial setup was using OSX 10.8.3 using Safari browser. I connected the router to the ISP modem and when online with it. Used the Factory Setup Wizard that appeared in the browser to set up the basic options first. Wizard completed successfully including registered the router for the mydlink.com feature and was able to see the router on the mydlink.com  web page from my home network. From work I could not. Not sure if this is a work issue or not. Router was online and I quickly had Internet services. Initial set up can also be done by D-Links QRS application as well on a supporting mobile phone.

The following screen captures are samples of what features this model router has. (Not all D-Link model routers have the same features.) All other features not listed here are the same and common to all D-Link model routers.

5Ghz AC Wireless

Media Server

New USB 2.0/3.0 port speed selection feature:
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/universal-serial-bus/usb3-frequency-interference-paper.html
So far only seen on the DIR-868L. Maybe seen on other DIR series routers with USB 3.0 port.

IPv6

QoS - Similar to the DIR-645, 835, 865L and 826L series routers.

Uplink speed manual settings max out at 20Mb and Download is 100Mb. DIR-645/835/868L/865L/826L Gaming and QoS for XBL

Firewall and NAT

Custom NAT settings are available on this model router. Not available on some model routers. SPI is not enabled by default out of the box. Will be testing with it ON and OFF.

IPv6 Firewall

Advanced Networking

IPv4 Routing

IPv6 Routing

Internet Sessions

Update: 05/10/2013
So using mostly default settings on the router accept for Reserving IP addresses for my devices and giving a new SSID name for wireless, put 2 xboxes on the 5Ghz radio and played last night. using no QoS rules at all, BO2 gaming was great. OPEN NAT on both boxes no matter which one was turned on first. We saw some odd behavior while in entering match making and presume this was due to the service. We waited and waited to enter into a match, or got separated or the game prematurely exited with everyone back to the lobby. Other than these non related DIR-868 issues, the router performed very well. I'm very impressed by it out of the box. Will be testing gaming on 2.4Ghz next.

I do notice that that Wireless Status page reports 2 samples, one is when the device is constantly active and data flow is happening, then for devices that are not active with data flow, there seems to be a idle speed rate seen. I presume this is by design.

I turned OFF my living room 2.4Ghz AP and now just using the 868 wireless. Range is great. 15 feet away with 2 walls. DIR-868 is in the bed room.

Media streaming and other experiences will be testing soon.

The power adapter is the same as the DIR-865Ls:

This is a kick azz router!!!  ;D

I presume since the 868L is getting long in the shorts, that there probably won't be anymore FW updates, unless there is a major security issue found. For new users looking into this model router, it's a good stable and solid router and features work well. There is a new follow on to the 868L if your concerned with updates and keeping the same UI:

Good Luck.

As an alternative FW to keep the DIR-868L Rev A going since there probably isn't going to be any more FW updates. I'm recommending that users review and check out DD-WRT for this model router.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#D-Link

DIR-868L Rev A and B series
Download Rev A: PATH> Downloads › betas › 2013 › 07-24-2013-r22118 › dlink-dir868l
http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads?path=betas%2F

Download Rev B: PATH> Downloads › betas › 2015 › 06-01-2015-r27147 › dlink-dir868l-revb
http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads?path=betas%2F

All support and information regarding DD-WRT after it's loaded on your router will be handled by the DD-WRT site and there forums.

OpenWRT doesn't seem to have any FW solutions for this model router at this time.

I'm working to see if I can get the Rev A GPL code for the DIR-868L. Only Rev B is available at this time. If we can get Rev A then maybe we can correct the QoS bug. Maybe.  We need the GPL code first. ::)

Good Luck.

New FW and probably the last:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=65889.0

Seems to be some improvement on QoS issue we found.
