Title: Slow Internet Performance Android Smartphones using DIR-890L (WORK AROUND)
Post by: robertiles on May 13, 2015, 10:38:57 AM
My Cisco E3000 home router turned 5 years old last week so I decided to buy a new router instead of upgrading my Cable Modem. I looked at professional reviews and it pointed me to the D-Link AC3200 DIR-890L. So I bought one.

H/W Ver A1 F/W Ver 1.03

I installed it. It connects to my Cable Modem Comcast Arris CM820. Created a 2.4 Ghz SSID and a 5.0Ghz SSID (different names and different from the single SSID from the E3000).  Security is WPA Personal. Using all other defaults.., 802.11 Mode, Channel, Power, Width. I started changing all the connected devices to connect to the new 2.4Ghz SSID or the 5.0 GHZ if they supported it.

Great connectivity and throughput for all devices EXCEPT for our 2 Smartphones, both Android devices. One is a Galaxy S5, the other is a Galaxy S6.  All apps (Facebook, Chrome, Safari, eMail, Twitter, etc.) on both phones load SLOW or timeout.  Our phones are consistently slow when accessing the Internet. Throughput is way faster when we turn WiFi off on the phones.  No issues with any other devices throughout the house and Garage.

Other devices in home include iPad, 2 laptops running Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, DirecTV, Sony Blu-Ray, Chamberlain Garage Door Status Adapter, Trane Thermostat, PC. And HP Printer. I also have a thumb drive installed in the USB port as well as a WD Storage Device attached to the DIR-890L.

Troubleshooting:
I saw on some support blogs where changing Channels might help. I used WiFi Analyzer to determine better channels (less interference from others I suppose). That didn’t help. I changed Modes… no help. Channel width changes… no help… Etc.

I unplugged DIR-890L and put my old router back in play and the Phones were back to normal. Put DIR-890L back in play, same slowness on Phones. Each time I powered off Cable Modem before continuing.

I added the phones to the HIGHEST and HIGH sections of QoS Engine. That did not help.

I tried adding the phones to the GUEST network except the router seemed to continually re-boot itself making my entire WiFi Network unusable. I stopped working down this avenue early on.

Side-by-Side tests (same exact location in house) between a phone and a laptop show the dramatic differences in throughput/performance.

Help!!  I really don’t want to return this router.

If you temporarily disable WPA security on the router, do the phones exhibit the same problem? Re-enable WPA after testing.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Zip Code 60102 Algonquin, IL outside of Chicago

Smart Connect is disabled.

Router is in the open and I have Max bars on the phones in all locations in the house.

You are now behind on FW updates, I recommend following the >FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0) and update to the recent security release: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=62502.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=62502.0)

I recommend doing the factory reset, upload the FW file, factory reset once more then setup from scratch and test the phone out first. Don't apply any saved config files.
Title: Re: Slow Internet Performance Android Smartphones using DIR-890L
Post by: robertiles on May 13, 2015, 11:00:33 AM
I will try that as soon as I can... Need WiFi now so will do at off hours or the weekend.  Will let you know. If I install 1.06 and then do a Factory Reset, that doesn't get rid of that update does it?  Also, should I test the Phones using  the Factory Installed SSID or Config my SSIDs before testing?
Title: Re: Slow Internet Performance Android Smartphones using DIR-890L
Post by: FurryNutz on May 13, 2015, 11:04:21 AM
No, factory reset only clears any configurations and ensures you are starting from a clean slate. Test the phones with a custom SSID name and leave SmartConnect enabled then test. Then test with SC disabled and see.

Post by: robertiles on May 13, 2015, 12:11:16 PM
OK, I got antsy so I followed the following procedures:

Factory Reset
Upload of 1.06
Successful Install of 1.06
Factory Reset
Added a Custom SSID w/Smart Connect
Side-by-Side comparison of Web Page loading Laptop vs. Smartphone right next to Dir-890L.. phone SLOW.. for instance, a 1-2 second load of a webpage on laptop and 1 minute for phone to load the same page. Turned WiFi off phone, same load was comparable.
Turned Smart Connect off
Same tests, same result
Another issue surfaced though, as I continued to customize and change my HP Printer to Static IP, I get an error message that says the "IP address cannot be the same."  HP was 192.168.0.149 and that's where I want it. ??
Title: Re: Slow Internet Performance Android Smartphones using DIR-890L

So if you turned off the WiFi on the phone and used it's cell service and the load time was slow there for web pages, then this would point to a phone/service issue...
I presume you are using the latest phone OS?
Try setting single mode G on 2.4ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz and test.

I recommend if you use static IPs or what a static IP for any devices, you need to apply them out side of the default DCHP IP address pool and it's recommended to set up any Static IP address ON the printer itself. Most HP printers have web page to manage and configure the printer. I have mine set for .14 as my model printer is a HP P2014n.

Went you set a reservation on the router for a device, if the device already has an IP address that you desire to have, then just enable the reservation, then select Save is all. You don't have to re-type in the IP address as I believe this causes the error message. I've seen this before myself.
Title: Re: Slow Internet Performance Android Smartphones using DIR-890L
Post by: robertiles on May 13, 2015, 12:35:46 PM
You misunderstood my comment. I turned WiFi off on the phone and used Cell Service yes but the performance was now comparable to my laptop connected through the DIR-890L Router... FAST.

OK, I will configure the HP Printer Static IP address outside of D-LINK UI, but I think it worked before I upgraded to 1.06.

So, my next test would be to configure the 802.11 Mode for both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz?  I can do N only on 5.0Ghz but the only options in the UI for 2.4Ghz is N, G/N, or B/G/N.

Ya after re-reading what you said I reconsidered...

What radios are the phones connected to when this happens? Both radios?

Try single N on both radios. Test with WPA2 enabled then Turn off WiFi security. Post your results please.

OK, I followed the process below but the Phone were still slow when accessing the Internet during every step. I tried various apps (email, Facebook, etc...) for each test and compared it side-by-side with the laptop connected to the same Radio. BTW, the phones are slow for both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz.

Switched to N only on both Radios.
Switched off WiFi Security for both Radios.
Back to Original configurations. Security back on and all modes available.  All my other devices are up and working normally.

Any other suggestions?

What OS version is on these phones?

These are the only devices to exhibit this issue?

I'm going to have someone review this thread. Please be patient.

Android Version 5.0.2 on the Galaxy S6. My wife is not home so I don't have her version number.

These are the only devices exhibiting real slow Internet access... includes iPad, Windows laptops and PCs, DirecTV, etc....

I am patient. I want to keep this router and our fallback is to turn off WiFi on the phones when we're home.

Good Luck!!!

I assume your connected to the 5ghz on the 890L, if so, on the 5ghz-1 drop it to the lowest channel. Then on your android phones, I would clear ALL memory of previous E3000 router connections and then reboot each phone. When the phone restarts, find 5ghz-1 and connect to it .

Let us know how it works ;D

I have been trying both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz.. Both are slow for the phones.

I tried what you asked, Channel 36 for 5.0Ghz radio, forgot all WiFi Networks, re-booted, connected to 5.0Ghz and it was still slow.

I then added a secondary 5.0Ghz radio that only my phone would recognize and it was still slow.

All other online devices working as advertised.

This is under review at D-Link as of yesterday. Seems like there may be a problem between the router and these particular phone models your experiencing.

I presume these phones work at different locations with different WiFi or WiFi routers?

I would recommend that you phone contact D-link support and ask for level 2 or higher support. Refer to this thread and lets start some support information going.

I'll post back here if I get any information.

Let us know what you find out.

I registered on this forum to get support for this same exact issue. I have a Galaxy s5 with custom firmware and my wife has the HTC one(m8) on the latest stock firmware. As for the router I have the latest 1.0.6 b04 patch. everytime i reset the router it works fast for my phones for the first minute then slows down to a crawl afterwards. it's been this way since the 1.03 b07? patch i believe. all my other devices work completely fine

Furry,

I suspect that there are driver issues between Android and the 890L. I guess Dlink may incorporate those drivers in the next FW release. ;D

Spoke with Level 3 Support. Ran 1 billion tests. They have kicked it up to Network Engineering as an issue and will contact me in 2-3 Business Days with a status. I know he collected a lot of data (settings) and he said he got all the documentation required. We tried changing different MAC addresses and even re-created the issue with the Factory Default. Will update this thread when I get more information.

I am having the EXACT same issue. It's not a speed issue, or latency issue, it's a communication issue with the router. I have 3 Android tablets and 2 Android phones in the house all with the same issue. Running latest firmware 1.06. I upgraded from a Linksys router and did not have this issue. Please let me know if a fix for this is found.

2 Asus Nexus 7 tablets with latest Android versions
1 LG G3 smart phone with the latest Android version
1 Motorola Droid Maxx smart phone with latest version of Android
1 LG Pad 8.3 LTE with latest version of Android

First, I apologize for not keeping this post up-to-date. I got a call from DLINK Network Engineering and ran through many different tests with no successful resolution. It was determined by the NW Engineer that I may have a defective router so, they sent me a new one.

Same exact issue with the new router. I communicated that to the NW Engineer.

I have not heard back from my email stating the problem is not with the HW.

Post by: Fiasco00 on June 15, 2015, 04:27:48 PM
Thanks for the update, I know it's not a HW issue, it's a software issue somewhere. It's as if the Android OS waits several seconds to attempt to connect to the router for information. You can see the two are communicating but it doesn't actually transfer data for 20-30 seconds and even then it's painfully slow. Running a speed test shows good speed and latency but that too takes quite a while to communicate with the router before the test actually runs.

So until this issue is fully review and understood by D-Link and we can presume that Android may have some part in this as well. Users should go over to the Android forums as it was suggested that there maybe some help and information regarding this. It was mentioned that maybe disabling power saving features on Android phones or rebooting the phone after deleting any saved WiFi profiles and setting up again may help with some issues seen with Android phones. Please post if you find any resolution for this...

D-Link is aware of this and is working on it. If anyone needs immediate help and information regarding this, please phone contact D-Link and or Android support.

Thanks for the advice, I tried removing the WiFi name that was saved in my phone and rebooting and it did not help. As far as Samsung goes, I do not own any Samsung products, only LG, Motorola, and Asus. It is obviously a problem with the router communicating with Android devices. When running a speed test via the Ookla app, it takes about a minute for the app to locate a server, and then when it actualy runs the test the speeds are fine. If I try to open Google.com in my browser, you can see that data is going back and forth but nothing actually happens for 20-30 seconds, and then when data IS sent, it is super slow.

This issue APPEARS to be solved for me.

All I had to do was DISABLE IPV6.

Let me know if this issue works for the rest of you guys. I will report back if anything changes, but this appears to have solved the problem. apparently by default Android devices try to use IPV6.

Kewl, awesome information. Thank you for posting.

Is IPv6 enabled on the router? You might run a test and disable IPv6 there if your ISP doesn't offer native IPv6 services.

Hope this helps other users.

Well, disabling IPV6 on the router seems to be promising... I won't be able to test it until next week as I am out of town but I am hoping this ends the issue. I did do some digging and Comcast is only 25% complete in their IPV6 rollout....

Thanks.

Just a couple more quick notes that may help Dlink and Android users.

The latest version of Android 5.0 and up claims to be IPV6 compatible, it is NOT however DHCPv6 compatible which I suspect may be the issue.

I use Time Warner cable for internet, according to them, they have rolled out IPV6 to over 90% of their users.

The odd thing for me is, I upgraded from a Linksys ea6500 router which also had IPV6 enabled, but never had this issue, I still suspect it's a firmware issue within the DIR-890L.
Title: Re: Slow Internet Performance Android Smartphones using DIR-890L
Post by: FurryNutz on June 17, 2015, 02:30:17 PM
Would be kind of hard to validate if the FW on the DIR890L would be to fully blame here. It maybe a behavioral condition of the Android code that is not correctly detecting if the router has IPv6 enabled or has a native connection to the ISP services with IPv6 protocols enabled. I presume that both D-Link and Android will be looking closely at this issue. I recommend that you notify Android of your findings as well.

One test to try. Set local connection only for IPv6 on the DIR-890L router and then re-enable IPv6 on the phone and test again.

I will be submitting a big report to Android as well, this will be the last thing I post here, but it does in fact look like the DHCPv6 is the issue, some people have change the setting in their routers to allow a "stateless" configuration. It does in fact appear to be an Adnroid issue as this is reported on several different router. Here is a link to the bug report which may help the engineers at Dlink understand the issue or find a permanent work around.

Thanks for all of your help FurryNutz!!

Hello!

I created an account here to post this additional solution that worked for me.  I hooked up a brand new 890L this week.  It shipped with the 1.03 FW.  Using the proper FW upgrade method I loaded the latest 1.07 with the security fix.  All seemed to be going really well, except mobile devices were crawling when on WiFi.  With the 890L, a Moto Surfboard supporting DOCSIS 3 and my 150MB/s Comcast connection; I was able to pull down almost the full 150mb/s from areas across my house.  Mobile devices were hanging on loading web pages no matter what.  This occurred on my Nexus 6, my wife's iPhone 5 and a friends iPhone 6.

I quickly found the support FAQ that suggested you turn off IPV6 entirely for a quick workaround fix.  That did work, but I was convinced there had to be a way to get IPV6 running and getting mobile devices to play nice.  After reading about IPV6 and Comcast's implementation I was able to settle into a working IPV6 setup with no mobile issues on wifi.  I can't guarantee this will work for you, but it definitely is for me on Comcast (Pennsylvania).

In the router settings > Internet > IPV6 tab I have the following config:

My Internet Connection Is: Auto Configuration SLAAC/DHCPv6
DNS Type: Obtain a DNS server address automatically
     Enable DHCP-PD: Enabled
Enable Automatic IPv6 Address Assignment: Enabled
Enable Automatic DHCP-PD in LAN: Enabled
     Autoconfiguration Type: SLAAC+Stateless DHCP
     Router Advertisement Lifetime: blank

Hope this helps!

My Internet Connection Is: Auto Configuration SLAAC/DHCPv6
DNS Type: Obtain a DNS server address automatically
     Enable DHCP-PD: Enabled
Enable Automatic IPv6 Address Assignment: Enabled
Enable Automatic DHCP-PD in LAN: Enabled
     Autoconfiguration Type: SLAAC+Stateless DHCP
     Router Advertisement Lifetime: blank

Hope this helps!

I am also in PA with Comcast   This solution worked for me.

THANKS!!!!!!!
