DIR-855 - Very slow Wireless, mostly
« on: May 24, 2011, 03:45:17 AM »

Hello D-link Forum!

Recently I bought a DIR-855 and can't say I'm very pleased with it so far. I hope it's a configuration problem and can be fixed but I've been looking for a couple of weeks now and just want this to work.

The Problem: I used speedtest.net as sort of benchmark, on normal occasion I get 10Mbps download easy. Normal Occasion = Computer connected directly to my modem. It surely is a problem with the router. On what seem to be random occasions, but it is also the majority of time I get 1Mbps max, mostly even less than 1Mbps. The internal network does not seem to be affected; I can upload and download from my local mediacenter at full speeds constantly. The problem occurs on both WIFI channels and even when connected by LAN Cable... Allthough the problem gets solved if I dissable WIFI in the router and connect by cable.

The Setup: As the router is supposed to be a powerfull machine it is used for 2 studentappartments. Connected with the router are -> LAN: Mediacenter (Popcorn Hour A-110); 2.4GHZ BAND: 3 Apple Macs, 1 Sony laptop, 1 Apple Ipod Touch;  5GHZ BAND: 1 Lenovo Thinkpad Laptop. I have played with the setting but that didn't change much. Speeds stayed slow on all systems.

The Settings: My firmware is 1.23EUb6 A2, I have found the router works the most stable for the moment if I dissable every fancy thing like WISH and QOS (too bad though). and set my 2.4GHz Band to 802.11g only and my 5GHz Band to 802.11n only. I played with different channels but that didn't affect anything. Am I missing something?

Sorry for any mistakes in my English as it is not my mothertongue.

try upgrading to latest available firmware first.

Firmwares can be found here : http://dlinkedrouter.org/
firmware links are on the right side, just scroll down a bit to find the ones available for the DIR-855
WW = World Wide
EU = Europe
NA = North America

Allready done before I posted this... I hoped that would solve it... but nothing changed. As mentioned in my post, my firmware is 1.23EU b6.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or built in router?

Are speed tests the same when directly connect from PC to ISP Modem?
Are you speed testing over a wired connection or wireless. Wireless are not valid as wireless does not profice accurate or stable signal for speed testing, only use wired.

What wireless modes are you using? Best is single G or N for either band or Mixed G and N. Try single mode G on 2.4Ghz and Single mode N on 5Ghz to test.

If you do upgrade FW, do the following,
Factory reset.
upgrade the FW.
Factory reset once more.
Don't load any saved configuration file, test the router with one PC wired to the router and test.

Let us know what you find out.

DSL

What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or built in router?
It's a Sitecom DC227, had no problems with my previous router and this modem before. It's a one port modem... does it have router? I guess so? I'm not sure. -> http://www.sitecom.com/adsl-2-modem/p/725

Are speed tests the same when directly connect from PC to ISP Modem?
As stated in my topic, no. PC connected to Modem gives full speeds.

Are you speed testing over a wired connection or wireless. Wireless are not valid as wireless does not profice accurate or stable signal for speed testing, only use wired.
As stated in my topic, both. They both have problems when Wireless is enabled. Without Wireless enabled I get stable and correct speeds with wire.

What wireless modes are you using? Best is single G or N for either band or Mixed G and N. Try single mode G on 2.4Ghz and Single mode N on 5Ghz to test.
As stated in my topic, again. 2.4 is on G mode only, 5 is on N mode only.

If you do upgrade FW, do the following,
Factory reset.
upgrade the FW.
Factory reset once more.
Don't load any saved configuration file, test the router with one PC wired to the router and test.

That is how I upgraded to 1.23 EU b6. Did not make any difference.

Try otherwise the 1.23WW firmware. Is solid as a rack in my DIR-855.  No issues with speed. If still the same issue then maybe the router is faulty.  Already tried to do a factory reset?

to perform a clean test try to not use the speedtest.net (can be unreliable) but instead download special files like 100MB.BIN or 1000MB.BIN files from different providers to test the actual speed.

One way to tell if the DSL modem doesn't have a built in router or if it does, and it might be in bridge mode which is preferred for a modem with a built in router, go into the 855 web page and look at the Status/Device info/WAN section. The IP address might be a ##.##.###.### number starting with 2 numbers. If it starts with 192.168 or 172 or maybe 10.0. then its possible that the modem is not in bridged mode. It's preferred to bridge these modem/routers.

When the Wifi is enabled, is there traffic or someone using the WiFi while speed testing over wired? Its best to only use wired connections and maybe shut off ALL wireless devices and see.

Wifi really should effect speeds if its on however if someone is using the WiFi while your speed testing, it will effect the results.

Are primary and 2ndary DNS addresses filled in?
Also is DNS relay enabled?
Try setting Firewall to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Looking at your DSL modems information, looks like it has a built in router.

Possibilities here:
See if you can bridge the DSL modem thus by turn off is router features. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause issues. If that can't be done, put the 855s IP address its getting from the DSL modem into the DSL modems DMZ. This should by pass the modem/routers processing and hand off everything to the 855 router.

Okay, just tried the 1.23WW... it seems the problem stays. I did try factory reset, even now again with the WW firmware.

Ok, Ip's start with 10.0 at my modem. I guess my modem needs to be in bridged mode for my adsl. I see, let's check that out, First let's see what you typed before...

Yes, people live here... but they know I'm working on it and they are not downloading anything while I'm testing. Even so, I doubt that would have such drastic impact that it drops from 10 Mbps to less than 1?

My DNS adresses are not filled in, not sure what to fill in there anyway. Also, if this is the problem why does it get good speeds occasionaly?
Firmware to endpoint doesn't change anything.

Let us know the results after bridging.

You'll need to entering and make sure the 855 will setup for your DSL account information I presume under Setup/Internet/Manual. All your ISP for help.

If you need any DNS, check with your ISP on what should in there. After you get the DSL modem bridged, you can find ISP DNS under Status/Device Info/Wan Section should they not be filled in or changed.

Also make sure the cable between the router and DSL Modem is good. Shortest length is preferred. I use a 1foot CAT 6 on mine. I know everyone can't do that short. LOL.

Well, thanks for your help, I don't understand all of what your saying... and I'm a bit affraid I'll just make things worse. All I can find in my modem about routing are these 3 pages:
http://s492.photobucket.com/albums/rr283/jasuin/?action=view&current=modemrouter1.jpg
http://s492.photobucket.com/albums/rr283/jasuin/?action=view&current=modemrouter2.jpg

If you see anything that needs to be changed, let me know :)

Need to bridge the DSL Modem first. Once thats done, you need to get the 855 set up so it will connect to the modem. You might want to call up the ISP and have them help you bridge the modem. Most ISP will help you get the account information you need to set up the 855 under Setup/Internet/Manual. You have to change the Connection type from DHCP to probably PPPoE. There will be a user name and password that you'll need to enter in. Make sure the Always connected is enabled too. If this is done right, the 855 router will connect to the modem and authenticate the account information and start accessing the ISP and internet properly. I recommend calling them up and having them help you with this portion.
